Too much is at stake, tell Congress: don't censor the Web.

Posted by on

Today, the 18th of January is the day to let it be known that you oppose two bills currently before the United States Congress.

These bills, PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) and SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) have the noble goal of attempting to eliminate the theft of copyright. They propose to do this however, in a manner which will fundamentally break the internet. Imagine a world where Youtube was banned, Minecraft was stopped because a fan made a character out of blocks which loosely resembles a movie star, or ModDB.com closed because someone from the community posted something inappropriate.

These threats are real, and today we call upon our audience to make themselves heard and let members of the Senate and the House know that while we must all work together to stop piracy, eliminating our freedom of speech on the internet is not the solution.

Actions speak louder than words so please:

  • Sign the Google petition.
  • Educate yourself about how SOPA and PIPA work.
  • Print and mail letters to your state's senators and representatives, urging them not to support this. Physical mail is harder to ignore than email. It piles up. You can find representatives' addresses here and senators' addresses here. Remember that PIPA is a Senate bill and SOPA is a House of Representatives bill.
  • Call your senators and representatives on the phone and urge them not to support the bills. See above links for phone numbers or click here to get a quick list of representatives based on where you live.

Finally, to all of the sites which have taken the extremely bold move of blacking out today - we salute you.

Thanks to Explosm for the graphics used.

so bunch of 50 to 70s that have hardly touched a keyboard let alone knowing how the internet works, are going to decide the fate of the internet. perhaps they should have asked the people how they felt about this instead of debating and passing Legislation of this magnitude. Have a voice today, or you may not have one... tomorrow.

This guy here
Youtube.com
has evidence that the whole piracy business that's going on today was caused, *drumroll* by the big business, long-time in advance. I cannot say this surprises me.

This is just stupid. Media gets enough money as it is, WITHOUT the ability to sue who they want! USA do not realize how big this will be, they don't realize just how much they are meddling. They CANNOT decide what happens to in other country. They CANNOT make a law which allows them to meddle wherever they please, just because of the music on a Youtube video! You think you're the boss of the world USA? Think again.

rofl you and the net can protest as much as you want and really just one day as if that will hurt anyone. oh we made it into the news oh this is so going to chance something, yea sure, wont change anything until you grab a gun. They already track and control and monitor us wherever they can, and you will accept it if you like it or not. As for the video it got no clue whats behind these oppositions. You should worry more about the NDAA.

I'm not going to buy (or even download) modern Hollywood movies. They are just crap. I like watching indie movies because they are creative. If SOPA passes... R.I.P indie movies... :(

We are living in the wild wests days of the internet. It was only a matter of time before the internet police showed up.

With all of the piracy going on, its really no surprize something would happen. While I do not support piracy, I certainly do not support censorship.

I do laugh when people talk about corperate greed and "all they care about is money". Freedom of speech is what we all want, in America we also have a free market. So the same rights which represent us and our rights to a free internet also give them the right to protect their assets.

TL:DR - SOPA & PIPA crashed the party because a couple under aged kids got drunk.

With the actions our government has committed I am ashamed to be an American. And there is not much that can be done to change it.

The first step was taken long ago, this is only the one of many, The steps down the ladder of a free country.

Its all because these companied want more and more money.... even though they got enough to sort out all of the worlds problems.. but waste it on films.. the government waste so much money on war when it should be concentrating on sorting out the poverty they have in their own country!
