For years now the Mod DB download system has allowed you to blindly choose any mirror. The problem with this was during the quiet periods the system was under utilized and during the busy periods it was over utilized. Not any more! The new system automatically picks the mirror closest to you and sends you your download (and displays an ad yay!) for you to watch while you wait for your file.
This means less clicks, no queues and hopefully not overloading or underloading our servers. Also ISPS CONTACT US if you would like to provide a mirror and have a big ad shown every download. Our system is fully automated, can target IP ranges and will promote your brand while helping our community and site a great deal. We need mirrors because if our systems are overloaded we send people to filefront for their files which we want to avoid, as we want to get the mod files out as quick as possible.
Awesome. Sounds like a real improvement to the system!
Sounds nice, although what was the problem with the old download system?
None really, it worked just didn't load balance so it was hard to manage. Also this one smartly picks the best mirror for you, and if a mirror isn't working it automatically removes it until it works again.
There are still a few bugs due to the different browsers, but this should hopefully allow us to roll out more and faster mirrors and get the support from ISPs.
Will the downloads be Orbit/Getright friendly too?
All ModDB mirrors use lightty download security, so links only work for 5minutes. If you want to resume, you will have to get a new link each time.
Sure. The reason I ask is because of upcoming mods, such as Neo Tokyo, for example, reportedly being 2Gb in size. My modem isnt fast enough to download 2Gb in a whole day that's all
I don't like the displays an ad idea, but the rest sounds nice!
the ad does not interfere with the download, and hopefully allows us to provider faster downloads so it should be win/win
the site needs to pay for itself somehow...
(buried)
Well, they could just charge you a subscription to the site instead :P
K, everything sounds good then!
i know some people who are gonna be really annoyed by this, but im not one of them :D
all for the better i guess :p
and the ad is indeed huge O_o but i usually open the window in a new tab so its easy to get rid of it for me :D
good job nonetheless n_n
Other than our shirt store Splitreason.com and jobs board Moddb.com (which accepts $10 donations) the entire site is free.
And we want to keep it that way, so at the moment advertising is the solution. We run as few ads as possible, no popups or anything annoying to cover the server costs which run into thousands of dollars. So we are glad you appreciate the service, hopefully we can get ISP support from around the world and deliver even faster downloads.
Sexy.
Looks pretty sweet! Much snazzier than the old one XD Also, I'm glad ModDB will get some extra cash through this, because they deserve it for the awesome service they given us over the years for free :) Good on 'ya!
Woo hoo!
It looks great. I appreciate the efforts moddb. I dont mind at all the ads since that will keep the server running longer. I hope that moddb can stay up forever since this is the place where all mods are, and i really like mods :D
i'd like to say, i did not had any problems regarding my dls, whether from overseas nor from europe. big thx for that to moddb.
even if moddb can't buy anything from my words, i wanted to mention it.
greetz.
Hmm very nice!
Will you be given the option of manually selecting a mirror if you want to?
yes you still can, in the mirror download you can click to view "other mirrors"
Oh boy, giant ads!
I hate it, it always picks the EU server for me, which gives me like 10kbs.
Ever since this "smart" system came I get horrible speeds, the EU server is horrible. Usually I get like 800kbs from moddb, now I get 100-300kbs(usually lower no matter what server I choose), that's A BIG DIFFIRENCE, I can't be arsed to download my favorite mods now because it will take too much time.
You guys better fix this and that fast.
For those who are getting the EU mirror & slow speeds - can you please advise what Country you are in, and your ISP?
Seems useful, This is gonna be awesome.
cool
awesome
Hey! it sounds great ^^
