Post news Report RSS Servers Needed

As said in the comments, were are wrapping things up so we can start think about a first release. But a release without servers will be boring for everyone. We already have a master server (thanks to crytical), but we are in need of people who can host servers (linux, mac or windows its up to you). The requirements aren't that heavy, we've been playtesting the game on a low specced VPS and it works okay (sometimes there's a bit of lag, but thats because of the shared nature of the server).

So anyone who can and wants to host an RTCW coop server, please contact me with a private message or an email to me. Send my your contact information and your location (so I can see what regions will have servers).

The popularity of this mod really depends on the quality/quantity of the servers. If anybody wants to design a web application where people can arrange games so people can find other people to play with, same thing: contact me asap !

btw: the first sentence in this post doesn't mean it will be ready in the next 2 weeks, we still need to make final builds, make some sort of installers, write documentation, etc.

I'll ask someone I know that owns a server, maybe he is willing to host a linux RTCW Coop Server. There are running 2 Elite Force II servers (1 also Coop) on it and they have no lag what so ever (EUROPE).
How many Player slots would be required ?

I could host a server instance as well but are the idtech3 network exploits already fixed? Like drdos?

As I mentioned, the drdos (distributed reflection denial of service) exploit is critical for server hosters even though it's actually a fail in the design of the UDP protocol. UDP simply allows you to spoof any ip adress and the victim that receives syn packets answers on this with an syn/ack packet which will lead in a reflection, multiply this via a script with spoofed ip adresses run it endlessly and your server is "dead", not exactly but you have then have a denial of service.

The ioquake3 project fixed this through the get_status exploit last year and this year the get_info exploit. Maybe you wanna check this.

Another approach which the etlegacy team has gone, is to take an improved variation of this, made by TheDushan of the OpenWolf project.

src and ticket can be found here:
Etlegacy.com

Regarding other exploits: There might be more though, but this
one has actually a very high priority. Of course it doesn't fix the problem at completely if it is to the source code applied, but an attack will be through this approach decreased if not thwarted, or the attacker will loose at least his interest in your server.

Another question/request:
Do you intend to add renderer enhancements like anti-aliasing and bloom? I am not talking about implementing an advanced renderer like XreaL but some squeezing a bit more out of the rtcw renderer, if you know what I mean :)

edit
wall of text I know... well I haven't watched into the bzzwolfsp source code yet, so I dunno if Dushan's or ioq3 patch could be simply applied or if there is more work necessary.

I implemented some code from ioq3: Code.google.com

don't know if that solves the one you describe, I hope so :)

about the renderer, I don't have any plans, these options don't add a real value imo, patches are welcome ofcourse :)

the only thing you will need are the pk3 files from your rtcw installation and our files. If the server you are playing on using the pk3's from the latest patch, then you'll need these pk3's too.

So this Co-op mod will be available for Lan and internet, might have voice chat, and allows us to play through the whole campaign? Badass...

Just a question: in order to balance out the fact that two+ players are playing, will the enemy count be increased?

it has voice chat.

And yes there's a possibility to add enemies. normal amount - more - a lot
and then there's also the option to let the enemies respawn

I don't know, but if other Q3 engine games work with this, then it will work too.
