Post news Report RSS Repairing Glux

This week I spent mostly repairing problems with Glux, discovered by players.

Hi all! This week was mostly devoted to fixing bugs in Glux (my new graphics and lighting engine). For example:

I got quite a number of reports that the game no longer worked on 32bit systems. After some research, I discovered this must be related to the fact that I accidently used a 64bit tool to create Glux. I ported all of this to the 32bit variant of the tool, and got things working again quickly. And this time, the Windows task manager shows that I'm running a 32bit program, so I'm quite hopeful that this is going to fix the problems for most people! I also discovered that my girlfriend actually uses a 32bit machine, so I got a place to really test this! The expected result is that (1) the last version of Olvand will not work and (2) the current version will.

  • Fishing contests are almost impossible in the current version of the game, because the GUI starts flickering as soon as the game is started. This turned out the be caused by the timer (which part of the mingame), which constantly asked the GUI to update at the same time as the main game did. Glux got confused by this, which caused the GUI to dissappear. I now only ask for updates from one place, which revived the GUI again:

  • I hadn't implemented a fullscreen option in Glux yet. I thought this only be a matter of 15-30 minutes... but apparently it wasn't that easy. Actually, I still haven't found a way to get back the original fullscreen 'toggle', with which you could switch in and out of fullscreen mode while playing. For now, switching modes will cause the whole game to restart. Too bad, but it's something at least.

So, as you can see, I'm currently in a bug fixing stage. For this week I managed to squeeze a little blogpost out of it, but as I progress the problems get smaller and less interesting to most of the testers... so I'll skip next week's blogpost, like I did last time when I was fixing bugs. I'll return when this update nears completion!

Depends a bit on what you mean by 'released', but you probably mean: when will I stop inviting people, and open to game to everybody. I will do that once I succeed in making people play more than just an hour or two. That is, when I have something 'addictive'.
