We're looking to have a "lite" release out by December 20th. It's time to get your war on!

Posted by on

So I'm breaking my own rule of never giving release dates. However, this time we're going to try to coincide with the next release of the Spring engine - somewhere around December 20th. With any luck, we'll be one of the games available in the engine installer. This next release will be a "lite" build (since we haven't finished all the content for the entire game yet).

The "lite" version is fully playable, with all four nations (US, USSR, Britain, Germany) but with a limited set of units; namely, all infantry, light vehicles, light and medium tanks, light and medium artillery and medium anti-tank guns.

PICTURE INTERMISSION! Because nobody likes a wall of text:

Sherman Firefly, M4A4 Sherman, M4A3 Upgunned 76mm Sherman, and 17 Pounder Anti-Tank gun.

Since we're new here, a quick overview of what Spring:1944 is trying to accomplish: the first goal is to make a fun and engaging RTS game, set in WWII. The second goal is to try to incorporate a semi-realistic approach to this game, so units interact as they should (ie, allied units are not all superheroes, tanks can in fact be killed by a single shot from a powerful enough gun, infantry will indeed be cut down by machineguns if told to charge across an open plain, ect). We want a WWII RTS game where we can create our forces however we want, rather than playing with a handful of troops the designers decided would be appropriate - if we want to build twenty Panzer IIIs:

Twenty Panzer IIIs

and go rampaging around the map, well, damnit, nothing is going to stop us (except time, resource demands, and the rather thin PzrIII armor).

Finally, we want a WWII RTS game where we can play against other people online, with epic engagements of hundreds of infantry and dozens of tanks and artillery units. That's what Spring:1944 is.

For those of you who have never played any games on the Spring engine, check it out here: Spring.clan-sy.com it's an excellent free, open source RTS engine with many different games on it, the most common of which are based on Total Annihilation.
