Post news Report RSS Project Reality 2 Game Announced!

Project Reality 2 (or simply "PR2") will be a free to play multiplayer FPS PC game, based off of the critically acclaimed Project Reality modifications for Battlefield 2 and ARMA 2. Unlike our previous projects, PR2 will be a completely standalone game that will require no retail game to play. Our mission is to create the most realistic, immersive and demanding shooter within a virtual combat environment, focusing on encouraging teamwork through tactical gameplay.

Posted by on

Since its inception over 8 years ago, Project Reality has built a large, dedicated community which has watched the mod evolve from a single forum post into one of the most successful and decorated modifications of its time. As Project Reality has continued to grow and branch out onto multiple game engines, one question has been continuously asked; Will Project Reality ever produce an independent game?

Well, today we are pleased to finally answer that question. The Project Reality team is proud to officially announce that we are currently developing a completely standalone PC game, Project Reality 2!

Current Status

Project Reality 2 began in mid 2012 and is being created completely from scratch using Crytek's next generation game engine, CryEngine 3 SDK. This powerful engine provides tools able to create many stunning features to recreate and improve upon what you as Project Reality players have become accustomed to.

We are currently developing an initial Alpha build, which will hopefully be ready for internal testing within the next two months. Since Project Reality 2 is a standalone game, everything must be built from scratch, thus requiring more production time than PR’s previous projects. A public release is still away off, but don’t worry; during the entire development cycle we will be updating the community with as much news and media as possible.

Features & Content

Initially, Project Reality 2 will be a small scale, infantry based FPS with a comprehensive weapon handling system that will aim to be as realistic as possible. Map sizes will be 1km and 2km with an Advance and Secure (or "AAS") style game mode, similar to that seen in the Project Reality: BF2 and Project Reality: ARMA 2 modifications.

Maps

The internal Alpha will have the Fools Road map which has been beautifully recreated in CryEngine, a true to life representation of the eastern part of Laskar Gar, Afghanistan and a basic training map available for players to familiarize themselves with the controls and other in-game aspects of PR2. Also under development is an amazing recreation of the Spanish city, Sant Elm, which will be featured in a future update.

Factions

What factions can you expect to see in Project Reality 2? Well, currently we plan on implementing the British Armed Forces along with a Rebel / Insurgent Force. The United States Army faction is also currently under development.

Weapons

The PR2 team has been working around the clock to utilize CryEngine 3’s enhanced performance to create the highest quality models and textures ever produced by Project Reality. Listed below are just a few of the numerous weapons and equipment that will be at your disposal.

Join the PR2 Team

The Project Reality 2 team is actively recruiting talent! Would you like to be a part of an established development team with experienced developers and many more contributors? Do you have a skillset with CryEngine 3? If you'd like to help out then please don't hesitate to submit an application. Whatever your skill, we want to know. We are always recruiting.

As you can see, these are exciting times for Project Reality! For further information please feel free to browse the Project Reality 2 Forums and become more involved. Also, be sure to connect to Project Reality 2 through social media to stay informed and receive up to the minute updates, the occasional leaked bit of information and more! Can the crytek engine netcode even handle such large scale cooperative missions with AI? I haven't seen it done successfully yet, but of all teams i would think you guys might be able to pull it off.

training against AI is wasted time. just join a squad on one of the servers, this is the best training you can have ;)

Unless you can solve the horrible texture pop-in issues with CE3 this is going to fail miserably.

Based on their work with the original Project Reality, I believe they'll overcome it. They're far too detail-oriented to let that rather important detail slip through!

That is an awesome sounding idea! I wonder though, as it is a standalone now, will you charge for any part of the game?

It will be free, because for CryEngine 3, you need a license to profit from the engine. If you release the game for free, you don't have to pay anything and it'll still be legal. There is more information on the CryTek website.

I am aware about the CE3 liscences. That doesnt mean the dev team could make an entire full game about it, and sell it!

Questions:

Will there be fixed wing aircraft/Ospreys?

How is the game going to play? (More like arma or more arcade like bf2?)

Will there be any kind of customization options to the player?

Will the map feature the MEC and China faction? Will there be any other imaginary factions?

Will there be a singleplayer campaign, mini campaign, bot mode, or co-op campaign?

How many players will the game support? How big will our squads be?

What will mumble be like?

I'm really happy that this idea is taking off- best of luck, and I'd be happy to help in any way I can!

Cool, played this mod once in the days that BF2 was still cool. It was kind of cool, but hard to understand for newbies like me. I shall give it another try anytime soon. Has this stand-alone good populated servers? Can it still run on a less-modern computer these days?

Interesting. Yeah, since you have tons of assets ready, why not use a superior engine?! Are there gonna be several maps, or is it possible to stream as large an area in CrySDK as Arma II's (Real Virtuality?) Engine can?
