Post news Report RSS Progress towards 3.8 and important fix for HL2MP based mods!

Quicker gameplay, smarter bots and hitbox related bug found and fixed.

Posted by on

Hey there, our next version is getting closer. Most players agree that the mod could improve in certain areas, namely game pace and accuracy, so that's our focus for 3.8. Fistful of Frags gameplay will be faster, movement, reload, most weapons will be more accurate and its rate of fire increased. Isn't like we go for quake speeds but you'll notice the changes for sure. Here's a gameplay video recorded only with bots:

Note that those damned bots tend to be mortally accurate sometimes, it's due weapon's increased accuracy and me not moving quick enough. FoF bot's don't pull shots out of the sleeve, their aim system trails target position so it's just a matter of moving correctly.

Also pay attention to the new tagging effect I added. Damage slows down enemy speed momentarily, and it doesn't scale linearly. So headshots are more important than before, even when they don't grant a kill, and higher damage guns are more useful. These changes aren't set in stone though, I want to see how community reacts because gameplay is a bit different right now.

The hitbox related bug recently fixed is big news for us. FoF has suffered certain hit registry issues along its history, and most of them were caused by me. However there was a last pretty big one I didn't managed to catch until now and it was part of the shipped code by Valve. If you want to know more about it:

And lastly, there's a thing called Greenlight, as you probably know. We are there as other Source mods, if you want to support FoF head over here.

Well, Source netcode is pretty accurate given its nature. I mean prediction can't be 100% accurate. Not saying other engines can't do this better, however it's far better method than trusting anything that comes from the client (example: Arma engine).

The problem here isn't how accurate is the prediction but a Titanic sized bug that may cause lots of missed shots. Also note this bug is specific of HL2MP based SDK, to avoid confusions.

great progress, you could also add a "vote for us on greenlight" button in the main menu, like No more room in Hell 1.05 got, so people who dont know about greenlight get to know it.

Maybe this thing I'm going to say doesn't make any sense, but I think we are in Greenlight mainly for the lulz and the occasional hits of new people that may find the mod by chance. I really don't think sending there people who already knows the mod will make any difference. That's not our war, only mods with big communities and indies that get some press behind may get enough votes. The hell I know anyway ^^

I read that not only the amount of votes counts for valve, so maybe we/you can make it :-)

I think FOF is great, but when I tried to play there were less than a handfull of servers online and they all had a horrible ping for me. Which is weird, because the last time I played it was extremely popular. I just lost tracks of the mod.

So, you say you don't want it to be bigger, or you are doing it for the lulz. But FOF could be bigger, with decent PR, enough updates and more ideas from the community incorporated. It is already such a great mod with a very distinct feel to it. If you chose so, you could go far with this one. I know I'm not the only one who thinks that. Jump on the "Django" train. I have a hunch western games with a sense of humor will be much seeked for, in a short while.

Oh yeah, we still could get out of this hole :) No offense but your suggestions have no tie with reality. 1. this mod's community died long ago, just check the activity in moddb after this news post, 2. we live in a different world than 5 or 6 years ago, there are a bunch of free competitive multiplayer FPS games these days, 3. no gaming press have any interest in a mod like this, not even youtube channels, and so on...

Some will think I don't want people play this mod or whatever, but there isn't much more I can do about it.

Yeah, please make it MORE FAST! I find it just disgusting. FoF is the best mp-mod and the only mp-game which i play regularly - i think this will change from less often to rarely. I loved the slow paced gameplay in the earlier versions; more time to make important decisions and stuff. I don't want to bash your game. It's great. It's up to you. But i want you to think about: do you want to make a great, teambased western-fps? Or do you want a CS-Clone with western guns and maps - the planned changes sound like this...and i'm kinda scared about that.
Thanks for reading my little concerns.

Sry for bad english.
Have a nice weekend. Enjoy Black Mesa. :>

Well, I know that changing the pace may be tricky, some players may not like it. So here's a poll Docs.google.com where everybody can express their opinion. There's also a new build to be tested in our forum. I'm looking forward to your feedback, for sure.

In the end it is just a matter of becoming a better game, which mostly is one that appeals more players. FoF isn't going to be more similar to CS or other games because it's faster. We have our unique guns, dual wield system, kicks and game modes. And there's always a desire for experimentation, without it the mod wouldn't exist.

I gave feedback on the poll. I just want to quote my last sentense here: "Last but not least: slow paced gameplay fits the western setting much more - this should be the essential argument here."
Sry for bad english again...i hope you know what i mean. :>
It would be bad, if fof doesn't get more players, but if the price is, to make the gameplay faster, i'd find it too high and it would destroy this great game for me. But that's just my personal opinion. I hope i'm not alone...

Ok, I got your point :) and my idea about all of this is: we go in a direction or the other. Slowing game pace down without realism features doesn't make much sense to me, let's say iron sights on all guns (dual wield would be pretty inaccurate), realistic health and damage, etc. Once you get all that shitz together then players may accept such slow gameplay. That would be too radical and well, pretty much a different mod.

Sometimes I received criticism because I ignored community suggestions, in this case people usually tell me about increasing speed not the opposite. Most players come with a background in FPS and the norm is mid to high speed, a slow shooter is ghetto territory. However, I'd not mind to craft a experimental version in the lines I said about realism. It would be like a separate mod. Sounds ok?

I went ahead and detailed a bit more the idea about a realistic FoF, take a look Fistful-of-frags.com

I got your point as well. In my opinion, the inaccuracy of revolvers, slow reloading speed, slow movement, slow downs after jumps, holster weapons if jumped during reloading, no bunny-hopping is/has been realistic enough, but much of it is history. And i'm aware that i'm not the typical mp-gamer. But thats the reason why i liked FOF so much right from the beginning; because it was different: unhasty instead of hectic, wihout players jumping around like Ewoks on a methylphenidate-overdose. If it was different, i'd have more fun with UT or CS:S (and i play them once in a while for one or two days and have some fun - but thats all).
You kinda have to follow the wishes of the majority, of course. But i find it truly sad, that there's obviously no place for games which work in different ways. And i don't know if i'm able to enjoy the next versions. I'll continue to play FOF anyway, but not as often as i used to do. Maybe i get used to it some day. Sorry. Thanks for the chat and your hard work on this great mod, R_Yell. I don't want to bother you - so...i said what i wanted to say. :>
