Faction Preview: The Bosporan Kingdom

Bosporan Kingdom

Overview:

The Bosporan Kingdom (also known as the Kingdom of the Cimmerian Bosporus) was an ancient state located in eastern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula, on the shores of the Cimmerian Bosporus (now known as the Strait of Kerch). It was named after the Bosphorus, also known as Istanbul Strait, a different strait that divides Asia from Europe.

Prosperity in the Bosporan Kingdom was based on the export of wheat, fish and slaves. The profit of the trade supported a class whose conspicuous wealth is still visible from newly discovered archaeological finds, excavated, often illegally, from numerous burial barrows known as kurgans. The once-thriving cities of the Bosporus left extensive architectural and sculptural remains, while the kurgans continue to yield spectacular Greco-Sarmatian objects, the best examples of which are now preserved in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. These include gold work, vases imported from Athens, coarse terracottas, textile fragments and specimens of carpentry and marquetry.

Multiculturalism thrived in the kingdom, which was a veritable melting pot of Hellenic, Scythian, Celtic and Thracian cultures. As a result of this, the Bosporan Kingdom has the potential of fielding an incredibly diverse army. The troops at the king's disposal range from the mighty horsemen of the steppes, to disciplined Greco-Scythian soldiers and even fierce Thracian mercenaries. In the hands of a skilled commander, this wealthy fringe state may well become great.

This faction expansion will be included in DeIs next major release.

Love those Sarmatian Cataphracts, the shoulder shield just screams "come at me bro". I may actually have to buy Rome 2 just for this mod now.
