We've added some new trees to Overgrowth. Click to check them out!

Posted by on

I made a new Pine tree today! We already discussed our modular tree system, but we didn't have any conifers yet. Here are some pictures of the new tree:

Trees

The tree trunk uses the tiling technique I learned from those failed experiments I talked about last week, as well as a new trick: the bark texture is tiled twice horizontally around the trunk to give it a higher apparent resolution. Because you can only ever see half of the tree at once, you can never spot the tiling.

Trees

We are definitely going to need some kind of level-of-detail management in order to draw dense forests. When the trees are as far away as they are in the picture below, we could substitute a 2D imposter image for each tree without any visible change. This should work especially well with our technique for smoothing the edges of alpha-mapped plants, as we discussed earlier.

Trees

What do you think of my new tree? Are there any other interesting trees you would like to see in Overgrowth?(permalink)

Very nice :) And I like the art style in general, at least at those screenshots. Kinda warhammerish.

trees look amazing, but the last screen shot the ground texture looked a little stretched

Nice pines, use some Araucárias(Monkey-puzzle Tree ) also, they're huge.

Some river and puddles should be nice too.

The first image is stunning. Never seen pine trees like this in games.
Not a hug thing, but sure adds to the atmosphere.

Any date on when we will see the first in-game characters?

We already have some characters, but we want to finish the animation system before putting them in.

I like the rocks in the first image, they look as if they're painted on but I know they're 3D.

Also, while the trees are good. I'm curious when we'll start to see water updates, like rivers and lakes. Or have i just missed those updates?

Still, great work as usual.

Say, looks awesome. Perhaps add some dynamically generated undergrowth for forests?

Whilst it does look nice, surely you can make more branches without massive hardware slowdowns because the tree just feels a bit empty.
I think also the wood is a light beachy, probably should be a little darker.

But it is nice,

I really like those Baobabs, which apparently can only be found in Africa:

Don't know if that fits your style, but these trees are so large you can effectively build houses on them - or in them, even.
