Post news Report RSS Parallel universes. Endless possibilities

You've already heard about SARMA Industrial Research Institute (IRI) - a science organisation shrouded in mystery. It isn't part of canonical Half-Life universe, so we had to think of a very unusual thing during our work. An alternate fictional world.

During the creation of the mod CUBE we've asked ourselves a few times - how to write it into the storyline of Half-Life in such a way that it would appear logical and not conflicting with the main storyline, written by VALVe?

We didn't want to just create levels for mindless walktrhough, although it was like that in the beginning (even now the mod can be "scrolled" through, we do not really push the story onto the player. If one wants to know the story, one should pay attention to details).

The development of CUBE started long before the release of Portal 2, back when it was still at the stage of rumors. In the first version of the mod, according to the plot, Cube complex was built by Aperture Science. Before the first screenshot of Portal 2 was posted, we already had new textures for cubes, which live to the present day. When VALVe announced Portal 2, for us it became a catastrophe.

Instantly we were flooded by YouTube comments, that we've copied the textures from the demo-video. And to say that Cube was built by Aperture science after Portal 2 release would be just absurd.

So we had to create another, sideline scientific organisation. But since the activities of the Cube closely resembled portal laboratories, we've decided to make this organisation a partner of Aperture Science.

That's how the secret cooperation between Aperture and SARMA Industrial Research Institute (IRI) began.
To be honest, this organisation had already existed for a long time in the plot of another project, but was so much different, so flashy, that it was hard to write it into Half-Life universe, without having to answer endless questions like "how did we not see this organisation in the other games, isn't it contradicting logic?".

But since we wanted a logical plotline, with a new pile of secrets and mysteries, apart from Black Mesa and Aperture Science we had to add a third, shadowy organisation.
But how to connect two completely unconnectable things? How to enter a new plot, without breaking the logic of the original, already written by VALVe Corporation?

Solution to that problem was incredibly simple. It was inspired by one of J.J.Abrams works, the series FRINGE. Those, who saw it, as well as his another creation - LOST, would note that Abrams had several times touched an idea of parallel universes. This idea was mostly developed in FRINGE.

So, what if we can make it such a way, that in the universe of Half-Life existed another, almost same universe with just one change - there exists SARMA IRI?

This way, creating an universe number two, we could connect two unconnectable things. We had written our own history in Half-Life, but made it an alternate universe.

Returning to the FRINGE: those, who saw it, will say that in the series two universes never intersected. We are not going to deny it, maybe in the future, we will think up something similar.
If in the Half-Life universe people invented portals, teleports, opened XEN and invited Combine invasion, then intersections with parallel universes should not surprise anyone.

Also we would like to point the differences between universes One (made by VALVe) and Two (out alternate story). They are mostly similar. Both have Black Mesa, Aperture Science, their successes and failures. The storyline of those two versions is the same. Both universes had XEN invasion, Combine breakthrough, City 17, Gordon Freeman, and many-many other things we've seen in episodes. But there are still some differences... Although, we are going to keep them to ourselves for now.

Aperture Science.

SARMA Industrial Research Institute (IRI).

VALVe Corporation?

Sounds interesting, I just hope that it's well executed so that it can be at least relatively well understood. But looking at the quality of the two mods, I can't say I'm too concerned. ^^

Well said Mr. Walrus, well said.

A really informative, skillfully written read Stephen. It's obvious that a great deal of serious thought ( and brain-storming ) has gone into the effort of fashioning this concept into a project of something quite special. Very ambitious.

While I can clearly comprehend what your presenting here in this document, I do have my reservations as to how this approach to developing the story's more intricate points will be easily relate-able on a broad enough scale to appeal to the entire Source fan base, while still being complex enough to be truly engaging for players who really enjoy the more engaging ( cerebral ), developing story-line. I'm really interested in seeing much, much more.

God, your idea is simply amazing! You guys clearly showed that you care for a good story - and want to give us a great one.

The idea of parallel universes is something I cannot deny: an astonishing idea, which opens up a whole new level of possibilities, you guys can simply re-model the Half Life world now, to fit the story as much as you can dream with, and without hurting the original idea of the base game.

Use this parallel universe wisely, and you will sure achieve something great. Can't wait for more!
