We're a small indie team but we decided it might be a good idea to send a man to E3. We don't have the resources for a proper booth or anything so John decided to try storming the place with a kilt, a Wolfire cape and bagpipes. Here’s his report! Click here to view the whole album.

I spent Tuesday morning serenading the exterior of the LA Convention center until the E3 administrators determined I was not a registered E3 floor model and asked me to put the pipes and cape away while on the premises or move the antics across street.

I crossed the street and continued playing. Many people looked, some wanted pictures and a few even interviewed me and asked me to play on camera. However, one news reporter had decided to conduct an interview outside the convention center and even though I was now a couple blocks away, the bagpipes were still coming through loud and clear and he asked to move again.

I did so and continued playing until a security guard at a nearby shopping center came out to tell me that I had to put my pipes away. I had now been playing for an hour or so and was getting tired so I figured it was about time to put the pipes away and get in line for the start of E3.

When the doors to my first E3 opened I was definitely awe struck by all the techno sites and sounds but one thing that really caught me eye was the professional floor models.

This was the E3 medical staff ready to go with band aid stickers to promote the game Trauma Team:

These two were modeling for the new Ninja Gaiden:

This woman was dressed up like the main character of Bayonetta (and mentioned that she liked my kilt :) ):

This woman was representing Everquest II:

Finally I couldn’t help but get my picture taken with the G4 girls because their skirts were a good match with my kilt:

I had a chance to interview some of the E3 models (they wished to remain anonymous) and here’s what I learned:

E3 models definitely prefer the term “model” over “booth babe” because it is more accurate and professional sounding. The women work through modeling agencies and the booths at E3 represent just a small fraction of the modeling work they do.

The E3 models tend to like video games but that has no bearing on what characters they decide to represent.

People at E3 are generally very polite and go so far as to ask for permission before taking pictures. However, those “witty” conversation starters we come up with like “How many people have you had to hit with your battle axe today?” get asked hundreds of times over the course of the conference and yet the models are still kind enough to humor everyone as if they’ve come up with something unique and intelligent to say.

I noticed that standing up all day for three days in a row is pretty tiring. So I asked the models what it was like to spend the whole day not only on their feet, but wearing heels. “It sucks!” they declared without hesitation. Their exhaustion was further emphasized when they said they would not be searching for E3 after-parties once the show was over, but would be going to sleep instead.
Apparently, using scantily clad models at E3 to promote games is a somewhat controversial. Just 3 years ago models were banned altogether. I won’t declare myself an expert on the morality of the subject but I will say that I have a lot of respect for the E3 models and found it very interesting to hear their perspective on the show.

Hah, hilarious! Good stuff - seems like you spent a good deal of your time "interviewing" E3 girls, though. Now, the only question I have left is:
Is that a fake beard???

Nice one, going to E3 as the "Underwolf", you guys keep growing and growing in my respect!

How was it realizing that half the people there don't even understand the concept of a game mod or "indie game"? Silly console gamers they make me want to puke.

I also severely doubt those models actually play games, or even understand games on a level past what half the people there understand. Half the people at E3 aren't gamers just console lovers who will salivate at any new console game. No one actually cares about game quality for consoles, I mean seriously, look at the console exclusive games they have.

People will amaze you my friend, someone you would assume would never do something, or enjoy something might surprise you by knowing more about it than you, or not living up to a stereotype.

Don't judge them on the fact that they are models, some exceptionally intelligent people may have the most mundane or far removed job you could think of.

You never know untill you talk to someone.

As much as I love Overgrowth, this gets a huge WTF from me. But I'm glad you had a good time.
