WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU DON'T WANT THE CUSTOM WEAPONS AND COMBINE SKINS?
Then you need to delete them which is very easy;
Change weapons back to original Hl2 ones, go to and delete the entire Weapons folder here;
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\sourcemods\Halflife2-Episode3\models\Weapons

Change all combine skins back to the original HL2 ones by going to Models folder here and delete all files that start with “combine_...” in there name;

How fast time flies by. Almost to the day it has been exactly 1 year after
Episode 3: "The Closure" was released. So i thought that maybe today would be a great moment to talk about what happened after its release.

Let me start with the installation of the mod, many people have problems with that.

The main problem is that you need to install "Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer" and set it to: "upcoming beta mode". Without this the mod will crash right at starting up. It is very easy to do, just read the install intructions at the bottom of this page, or watch the install video that i linked to above.

How well was the mod receeved?

As soon as the mod was released the hard core HL2 community started to bash the mod. It was HL(2) unworthy, it should never have been named Ep3. It was by far the worst mod many people ever had seen. Now that i think of it, it is a real miracle that i haven't receeved even one death treat, (honestly.) Many people had huge expectations because they had followed this mod over the years. I don't think i could ever have even come near what they expected in the end. A few comments have stuck in to my mind, one said

28 spymap ep3 4110057

for instance; "I played the full mod, and when it was finished i was so mad! Valve would never have made such a shit like this." A lot of comments said something like; "The mod was ok, but because it is titled Ep3 it is really bad." I have asked myself for quit some time, did i hype the mod to much, am i to blame for this? But then i do come to the conclusion that i really didn't go overboard with releasing articles. Between some of them were months. I guess it has to do with the overall lenght of the development, which was 5

18 spymap ep3

years. People had to wait 5 years. As always were there people who didn't play it but jumped on the wagon of bashing this mod. Some even admitted that they didn't play it. All is ok, that is internet these days. It is that i have experience with releasing mods, otherwise it really would have broken me, all this negativity. But through the years i have learned that i just need to wait and see what happens. Which brings us to today. A year later the mod still does very well. By now the hard core community knows about the mod, and

screens 4

maybe even played it. So it seems it is now time for those who aren't hard core so to say. And they see the mod for what it is. The overall number people give this mod is quit good, specially when you considder all those times people gave it a 1. On Moddb the people give it a 6.5 (out of 10), and on RTSL 3.84 (out of 5). I understand that this means 'average', but taking in all the very low numbers like the 1 it really isn't that bad. Ofcourse may people think that this is a bad mod, but it doesn't deserve a 1. Guess it is the same as always, it has all to do with a matter of taste. About the download amount. As i already said, the amount of

17 spymap ep3

downloads is probably the most important tool for a developer to see how succesfull and or popular his work is. It is always hard to know exactly how much downloads you have, simply because i can't track all mirror servers over the whole world. And i forgot to write down the number each time when i uploaded a new version. But all in all the mod is downloaded by now around 100.000 times. A huge number, even when my CtoA mod had around 350.000 downloads. To be honest was a very afraid that by now the HL(2) community would be so small after all these years that the download wouldn't come above 30.000 or so. The sites i uploaded the mod to are ofcourse Moddb and then RTSL. But many people, specially in Asia and Russian sites have added mirror download servers to the list. And because i can't read those sites its hard to follow what is going on there. It even seems someone in Russia is selling this mod, in box!

14 spymap ep3

Making my profile complete on Moddb;

My first few years on Moddb i let a friend of mine upload my work, simply because it didn't matter to me who did upload it, as long as people could play it. But only a year ago or so i realised that this did mean that not all my work did show up in my profile. I asked Moddb if they could change this for me, otherwise it ment that i had to upload it all again and that would mean all comments would be deleted, same as the download accounts. And ofcourse does every modder wants to know how much his work is downloaded. Although in these cases all these mappacks were already released years ago on other sites. This means you can now find all my mods in my mods section, and all my sp-mappacks in my Addons section here, (all my Cod1+2, Sof2; Quake2, Mohaa, Prey sp-maps / mappacks);

Please check them out if you are interested in them, some of them are good for many, many hours of gameplay fun!

A lot of people had and or have questions, to answer them ones and for all i will place at the bottum of this article a Q & A.

Q & A:

Why did you use Star Trek assets (and other game assets for that matter in this HL2 mod?

To be honest is the answer as short as it is silly, because i didn't had any other assets to use. As some of you know is this my 5th HL2 mod and i really had seen, played and used already to many times the original Hl2 assets. I really needed new content for me to be able to work 5 years on this mod, i simply can't stand the old weapons, zombies and combines anymore. I have asked on many sites many times for help. A few people said they would help but in the end hardly anyone did. There were a few mods that weren't released and worked on anymore, so i asked those developers if i may use them. They all gave permission and some of them uploaded all there assets for anyone to use. And one of them was the Star Trek HL2 mod. I can imagine that it may sound strange for some, but i rather wanted to use Star Trek material which is completely out of place as to use HL2 assets again.

Why did you not follow the HL2 lore?

Again, quit a silly answer. It all comes down to how i play games i assume, and therefore make maps/mods. I love fpshooters like the first 2 COD games, the FEAR series, etc. To me a story is not that important. So i knew something about the HL2 story, but because it has been 7 years or so ago that i played it i had forgotten most about it it seems. Because after the mods release and reading all comments it is clear that i made quit a lot of mistakes for instance with the characters. All i wanted was to make a very large mod, with lots of action, and a story that linked it all together. At the same time i wanted to make some kind of follow up on the original ep2. So i don't fully agree with those people that say that this mod has nothing in it that makes it a follow up on ep2, and therefore it deserves the ep3 title. Because you do find the Borealis in this mod and it does give a answer to how the whole HL sage ends. Ofcourse it is not what Valve would have made, thought that was such a silly remark many people made. I am a one man show, Valve has so much more to work with. And, probably most important, they will earn money on it. I don't, which is fully ok. (Yes, i do think it is silly that Valve wants to try to sell mods again through steam, don't they already make enough money as it is? To ask 40% of mods is just making money while other people do the work. But i get off topic here.) For me it was very important that what i had in mind i also could make, if it was logical or not, relealistic or not didn't matter to me. To be able to work for 5 years almost daily on a mod i needed to have the option to do whatever i wanted with it, and that i did.

Why did you use cutscenes, and even showed Gordon in them?

Can't tell you how many people asked me this question. Ofcourse am i aware that Valve doesn't use cutscenes (beside at the start of ep2), but i love making them, and watching them myself. But, that is not the only reason why i made them. A lot of people said that the use of them did harm the immersion, and that did amaze me quit a bit. Because i always feel much more immersed in a game when i do see cutscenes. And even more when i see the player figure in it. I really don't make this up, this is the thruth. So that is why i used them, and why i showed Gordon in them. Also is it much easier to tell a story this way because as developer you have to do a lot of extra work when you give the player freedom to move while the story is told. Although i have to admit that i did went a bit overboard with the amount of cutscenes.

The cutscenes were silly, why show Gordon walking from one door to another?

Also a many heart comment. And i have to agree here. Those are simply silly. Let me first explain why i did add them. As you know, when you played the mod, are there a lot of very large, detailed levels in this mod. And when i work on them i have to cut them up in parts. Because otherwise i hardly can see what is what in the editor while i make the maps. Also does it work quicker, very large detailed maps do make a computer slower while working on it. Even a powerfull computer as i have, (8 core 3.1 Ghz, 8 Ram, 64 bits). Ones everything is made in a map i place all parts again in the one level. So i had to make Gordon jump you could say from one part to another part in the map. And at that time i thought it would be best to use a cutscene for this, were Gordon walks through a small hallway. Should i now make that level again i would do it differently. When i played the level after nearly a year i too thought it felt strange.

What are you working on now?

Well, nothing really. Quit strange because the last 16 years i always was working on some mod or mappack, with different games. But it just takes to much time and effort, it really started to take crazy shapes the last 5 years. My complete life was modding, from the moring till the evening. And that had to stop. I don't say i will never make another mod or map. But for now i am focussing on work and drawing, (looking in to making a Youtube cartoon channel of some sort, and drawing a cartoon book for adults.)

I want to thank all those people who have followed my work, and played it. It was a real pleasure to be some sort of a "famous person" in the modding world. Quit odd to realise something like that, really! Ofcourse could so much have been done so much better in my work, and ofcourse is it far from perfect. But, all i wanted to do was having fun making levels that i would like to play. And it was only a huge surprice to find out that so many people did like them to. Only the future will tell what will come next. Ofcourse, should HL3 see the light of day, at one moment, then i will be mapping again. And my dream is still making my own indie game, but also that is something for far in to the future.

greetings,

Leon Brinkmann (aka SPYmaps).

Don't deny it, the main backslash was not due to quality, but fact you until the very backslash portrayed it as the HL episodes continuation while the final creation was more self-indulgent than anything. You promised a satisfying conclusion that you dared to call Episode 3, and in the end you just relived your experiences recreating Duke Nukem 3D and other previously modded by you title level design, not because it enhanced gameplay, but for nostalgia's sake. You even made a museum dedicated to yourself, not as an easter egg but core experience! Believe me, if you were to name it as "Gordon's Journey" or "Return from Borealis", you would witness half the backslash. Though, even then that wouldn't fix the fact that all these unskipable cinematics are even more questionable if plot didn't matter in the first place, or the fact that level realism is considerably bellow average for HL2 mods, or that combat is real dull with all the NPC and weapon changes not being reflected by gameplay.

Another thing is, why didn't you edit assets like Star Trek ones to fit into HL2?Like, you could have just used GIMP or other free image editor and changed hue and replaced Star Trek logos and blatant elements with with more fitting ones like Aperture logos. What stopped you? Being an artist I'd expect you know how to pull that off.

Even the title of this article is an indication. Playing on this community's expectations isn't a wise move, (especially after all these years and false hype), but the mod itself was enjoyable enough.

It certainly wasn't up to Valve's previous standards, but that should go without saying.

To anyone who has played previous mods by Leon, such as the excellent Strider Mountain, you could tell there was a certain style to the development. I still have fond memories of crossing the massive bridge near the top of the Mountain, as distant combine fired upon me, or the massive battle in the Strider Development Chamber. The level design, the cinematics, everything about Leon's mods feel very distinctively his style. Why this could be? It's hard to say. I've tried analyzing it, and it does probably come down to layouts and structures being a little bit off, almost like an Uncanny Valley effect on geometry.

However, that's not to say its bad. It *is* divisive however. To many, the designs are flawed and terrible, to others it has character that you don't normally see in level design.

To anyone who thought for a second that this was a full Valve experience just by the title, you need a serious reality check. I can't speak for Leon, but this mod did have a different name, back in the early stages. I imagine it was changed to "The Closure" not in terms of closure of the HL2 episode trilogy, but closure for Leon's HL2 modding career. He's stated over all these years that this would be the last. I would imagine that's why there is some museum within the game.

I won't deny, seeing art assets that are clearly from other franchises does break me out of the world that Leon has crafted, but he's certainly not the first to fall back on existing recognizable art. I wish it were changed and different but I can accept it for what it is and the circumstances that modding provide.

Leon's mods are not for everyone. That is just fact. For the new, it may be hard to swallow. For the old, it's the final chapter in Leon's story. And that is worth more then you may imagine.

"I won't deny, seeing art assets that are clearly from other franchises does break me out of the world that Leon has crafted"
Likewise. There was a modder who changed some to more in line with Half Life. Not all of it is good imo, but for me, re-adding the combine back into the mod really helps the feel of it.

I dunno, it wasn't as terrible as you make it out to be. All the custom content really diversified it, and even if it's not the "Episode 3" everyone expected, it was still hella fun to play. Just, you know, not "Episode 3"

Actually high download numbers does indicate quality since word of mouth is the best pr you can get. And if it's real good, the word will spread. Doesn't mean mods with low downloads are bad, they might not have attracted a big enough group initially, but even the mods on the bottom of the lists gets checked out, so they probably are. Scores doesn't matter much since people rarely score objectively, so it really is the best tool they have.

I would like to play this mod, but it won't show up in my Steam Library. I followed exactly the installation instructions, but still it won't show up.

- I installed Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer and set it to upcoming beta
- I downloaded the version 2.0 of Episode 3
- I extracted all the files into the sourcemods folder
- I restarted Steam (logout/login) several times

Still there is no such game in my library.

Is there something more necessary?
Is it possible to add manually the mod to the library?

Ok I found out what the problem was!

It would be good if you would include the following info in the install instructions:

- When extracting the files into the sourcemods folder, MAKE a new folder named Halflife2-Episode3 and MOVE all the files to it

By default all the files from the .rar package I downloaded here from moddb.com would install DIRECTLY into the sourcemods folder WITHOUT the "Halflife2-Episode3" folder. Somebody who's not into HL2 modding scene, could not notice that this is the problem.

My salvation was watching your Youtube video and so I noticed you've got this folder created.

I am glad you did find the solution. That it did not make the Ep3 folder while you extracted the files has something to do with the settings of the program that you used to extract. Because normally it does make the ep3 folder. So it really has to do with the settings of the program you used. Otherwise you would have seen comments like yours here many times. Still, sorry that it cause so much frustration. Hope you have fun now,

How about talking about what a mess Valve left us since they updated the Source Engine SDK base? Now we actually have to read special install instructions in order to play mods. Never had to do that before instead just extract in SourceMods restart Steam and play.

Several of the older mods have been patched by malortie but I still can't get some of them to run even though I followed the instructions. Crash on startup.

This just ruins the fun for me and I guess it is time to move on.
To anyone who wants to make games, just switch to Unity or Unreal Engine. Several have done so already.

No, ofcourse are there many issues that could be changed or made better. But i did fix some small issues and released some patches and versions. Last version is 2.0, and that is it. The mod took already 5 years of my life. I know, i keep saying this but i still have the feeling most people get the real crasp of how much time and effort that actually is. I have to stop at one point, and that point is with version 2.0.
So, no. I haven't done anything anymore after version / patch 2.0 and there will also not come any more in the future.

Thank you all for commenting. I have said what i had to say and i am glad you all give your thoughts on this mod. Sorry when you didn't like it. To me this is a worthy episode 3 mod, (do you see the word 'mod'?)

Its funny though. Severel years ago people knew when they played a mod that they were only playing a fan made project. Nothing more nothing less. But it seems some players start to compair these days mods with actual games or HL2 episodes. This is a mod, so it will have flaws in it, it will not be perfect.
As Alencore said so very well above;
"It's a mapper's mod..."
I am a mapper, always have been always will be. And, ALWAYS said that i make mods and mappacks were my main focus is on mapping. I did start adding custom made content in my last few mods, but only because i started to get sick of using original assets, again. That i did in my first few source mods already. Needed new stuff to work with. And, i asked so many times for help, on so many places. But why am i defending myself again, i have explained it all above and so many times before. let me just close with explaning it all ones more, in one line;

Episode 3 is a mod, made mainly by one guy, with lots of help from others (by giving me there not used assets). It does seserve the Ep3 title, simply because it does bring you to the Borealis and it does close the HL(2) saga in the end. That it doesn't live up to your standarts, or Valves, or what you think valves should be in only logical. Because, and here it comes...... it's... you guessed it, a mod. It really keeps amazing me that some people make such a big fuzz out of it. Its only a silly mod, nothing more nothing less. More people like it as those who don't, the numbers show that clearly. And as modder/mapper i have succeeded then. Nothing to do with quality over quantity. people are not that easely foolet as you think, really.

This mod certainly did split me apart, with some parts being something that I really loved and some parts being hell for my sanity, it really is a splitting mod. Heck, that 50/50 love/hate for this mod is what got me into doing an addon for it in the first place.

Still, at the end, a mod is what a modder wants it to be, I've always stuck to the rule of "make whatever you want (but be prepared for feedback if release)" thing, and well, this is what Leon wants to make, at the very least I respect it for the time he has spent in doing this.

Good to know you don't have that ol' perfectionist thing goin' Leon, I would have been driven nuts making something in this size and then looking and redoing things that I felt were off.

It's been a year? Damn, I'm behind.

For what it's worth, I agree with you for the most part. I think the mod has some serious issues, but the bashing it got was way overboard. I remember one video where a guy was playing the mod, he seemed to go in looking to hate it, and went on a rant that the metro cops had been replaced with army guys. I'm kind of reminded of the hate Cinematic Mod used to get. I think part of it is when something goes against their head-canon, the Half Life community jumps on it and tries to tear it down.

I thought you were going to make an indie game?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
SPY-maps Author
SPY-maps - - 2,902 comments

I think i know which video you mean, was done by a very popular Youtube Source video channel. He played the first level and started to rant indeed about the use of new combine skins. And after about 20 minutes playing he decided he had seen enough to judge the full 15+ hours gameplay. Like i said, i have released so many mods by now that i am used to how things work, specially on line. But even then it still hurts. As some artist said, 1000 people can say its great, you only remember that one person who said it wasn't. I don't have that feeling that much anymore, but it is only human to get upset, even when you know there arguments have most of the time nothing to do with the mod itself, but with other things.

About the indie project, that is so hard. And i only start a indie project when i am sure it has a real change of success. My main issue now still is finding team members, mainly coders. Have a idea of making a fps like Duke Nukem 3D or Shadow Warrior(1). With the characters made out of turning sprites. The Build engine that was used for that is to old and buggy. People say Unity can make such a exact game, so i am looking in to it but again, team members. Can't do it all by myself, but it is very hard to find enthousiastic people, (nearly impossible).

Sould you want to follow me in this then you could follow my profile, (so now this mod but my SPY-maps profile), this way you get updates about it when i do start something.

Its still a real dream of mine which i intent to carry out!

This is why I have much less respect for the Steam community or the fan-base of Valve's games. Many of them have the mentality of self-entitled high school/middle school kids who will go to the extreme and bullying the **** out of you should even the slightest thing go wrong. They remind me awfully like how the modern CoD fankids used to be back when MW2 was in the spotlight (and some of them were literally children playing the rated T/M games).

Honestly, there is never satisfying these kids unless your Valve or you're lucky enough to be Crowbar Collective and even they weren't totally immune to the wrath of the HL fans (especially due to their ever-delaying Xen release that should have already arrived years ago).

The immaturity of the Steam fan-base is also half the reason Valve is now trying to replace Steam Greenlight with Steam Direct. They learned the hard way what happens when they overestimate the intelligence of the masses, at least those from their service platform.

All that aside, I am trying your mod now. Loved your work as always Leon, especially Strider Mountain.

This mod fades away in comparison to crowbar collective. They stayed true to the lore and did a great job. Leon cared only about what will make him enjoy the mod, not the people who followed the mod for so long. There would be no quarrel here if he only would not name it with the original series name yet then the interest in the mod would be much smaller. So he is the one to blame, not us the fans.

Who even said this mod should even be compared with Crowbar Collective's indie game?!? Of course this mod falters in comparison to a considerably AAA-quality game and I'm NOT even expecting this game to be a HL remake or a top-notch quality mod of such caliber, but I am expecting an overall fun mod, but that's FAR besides the point.

As for the mod itself, why should a creator be entitled to make a game to only satisfy the fans and not himself? You may have a point with the title choice Leon made, however I don't believe in doing something one can NOT enjoy. I worked on my first project not just because the fans will enjoy it, but also because I want to enjoy it. If I can not enjoy doing what I love, I could care less how many of my fans anticipate my game, I'm not going to waste any more time on it, and that's partially why my first game was shutdown - I lost the energy, time, willpower, and now the developer support to move on (creative director lost interest and faith and I can't go on without him especially since he owns the patent on the story plot).

It's always has to be about you HL fans instead of just trying to enjoy the mod and let us creators be human. "ME! ME! ME!" Thanks for proving my point.

Have fun with Steam Direct.

Why are you forcing us to be satisfied with something that would satisfy only Leon himself and few other people ? Makes no sense. Besides some people like me felt cheated in a way. The wait was very long and some of us expected to have a mod deserving to be true to the story. The mod name deceived us all. It is like you see a toy of a dinosaur, you want to have it, you wait few years for it and in the end you get it but with missing head instead. Would you still enjoy it ?

Who said I was "forcing" you to be satisfied with anything?

Alright, I guess I can somewhat see your frustration with the title name being misleading and deceiving to some, and after playing the map for a while, I can actually see why you guys are frustrated in accordance to the title name.

At the same time however it also seems at least some of you have went overboard and gave this mod far less credit than it deserves in its own right despite it's disingenuous misuse of the sequel title stamp. Leon's project may not prove a worthy sequel to Half-Life however it was still a fun mod worth my time and file size, and I just hate to see some bigots slam a project's entirely just because of one or few major ****-ups, especially when some of them have not even tried the mod at all, worse a few will lie and claim they did or argue a few levels were played before they just gave up. Instead of giving up quarter-way, I'll note the problem(s) and try to overlook it when it comes to reviewing a game/mod, before I make my total judgement.

I also need to highlight that I never came to this mod expecting a blockbuster (I never expect such from ANY of Leon's mods since Strider Mountain), but I do expect fun gameplay with interesting story.

I noticed mods like The Gate series catches a LOT of flak for its somewhat cheezy voice-acting, weird blending of character archetypes (i.e. The timespace General dressed as a ****** in the original HL mod), and the very long prison scenes (which I personally don't mind it really gives the realistic feeling of jail vs. the old time-rush), yet they were still kickass mods to play through. The Gate II was one of my most favorite mods of all time because of the clever execution that was done. I'm surprised I didn't even have to use cheats given the somewhat unusual difficulty at the earlier stages.

I just have mixed feelings on this whole Leon controversy and I'd wish for it to end. Maybe its best for Leon to change the name if still possible and you guys should give him another chance and try to replay his mod under the different name and restart your opinions on it.

Perhaps that can help limit this canon-controversy. Nigh any mod should deserve a second chance after all right?

EDIT: When I stated some of you, I don't necessarily mean you, I mean most of the others who are against it like you are. You seem to be one of the reasonable ones.

EDIT2: Actually it seems this already has a new name (The Closure).

Thanks Lordlheanacho, for the kind words. Seems most gamers are kids, and with that comes indeed a form of immaturity indeed. So all in all we shouldn't be to surpriced with such comments.

I doubt that all of them are kids, not all at least, they know Half Life after all. And current generarion of gamers don't even know what Half Life means.

Even the name of this article itself calls for vengance from heaven. Why are you still calling it half life 2 episode 3 ?! After this I wanted to change the rating of my review from 5 to 4, it would make a difference because my review is the highest rated. I will not do it only because you spent so much time to do the mod. In the article you said the story is not important. How do you expect people to enjoy the mod if the story is put on the last shelf ? Story is the vital aspect of every game, not only half life. Also you try to explain yourself that you forgot the story. Was it really that hard to play through episodes again and remind yourself the story ? Especially that you claim it does deserve ep3 name. But even when not taking into consideration the half life lore but the gameplay, well.... The gameplay itself was not well thought out either. I remember the sections where I literally had to kill about 50 antlions in the single area to pass through, what is the point ? This artcle was supposed to redeem your sins that you so desperately try to justify, but for me at least it does more bad than good.

Sorry Hecumarine, but i don't understand why you say your rating of 5 is the highest this mod did get because when you check the review section you will see a lot of people did give it a 10, 9, 8 etc.(in fact, most people gave it a 10, 26% of all voters!!)

Ep3 is a mod, not a Valve episode. As modder i make mods purely for my own enjoyment, and ones it is done i release it in the hope that other people will like to play it. I don't make mods for other people, so i will not put months or even years of work in it, just to please those people. I make what i want, and thats it. Ofcourse do i like it when people liked playing it, but when this isn't the case then that is really fine with me. And till now all my mods have been reviewed as Average and above, so that is not bad at all. Ofcourse is a story nice in a game / mod, but to me that is not the main point. I love shooting stuff more then really getting the full story of something. That is also why you find on some places 50 ants, i LOVE making them splatter in to pices.

Sorry when you didn't like it, that is all i can say.
And it does amaze me that you still keep asking why i named it Ep3. I have explained this at least 10 times now. But, because you asked i will explain it ones more;
I named it Ep3 The Closure, because it does start were the original ep2 left of, it does bring the player to the Borealis and in the end it does give a answer to how it all ends. That it is not the Ep3 you had in mind will not make this a possible Ep3, MY ep3. Also is this my 3th very large mod with Hl2, i made 5 in total. And it does close my Source modding time as it does the Hl2 story, so that is why i added The Closure to it.
That is all, it is just a mod, nothing more nothing less.
It is just a silly mod, .....

By highest rated i meant that most people agree with me and it is number 1 review on the reviews list. What I meant about the name of your mod is that you could have named it differently, so less people would complain.
