Post news Report RSS One week to release. Also, new trailer.

Gamma Energy comes out August 8th. There's a new trailer to celebrate.

It's almost time! That's right people. When I said summer, I meant summer. Before I even considered a website or moddb page or anything, the release date was "End of July". I never set a specific date, but I think August 8th counts, especially since it's so close to July and I didn't really plaster "ZOMG I WIL B DUN BY JULLY 31!!!!1!" all over the place. It's certainly better than Valve Time. Anyway, I'm posting this update to confirm that my video editing skills are somewhat less than my map editing skills and that the release is still on track. Just in case though, I have compiled a list of events that may cause a delayed release:

  1. My house catches fire
  2. An EMP is detonated over New York City, causing all electronics below to fail simultaneously
  3. Someone steals my computer and the backups on my flash drive
  4. I die or end up in a coma
  5. Monkeys
So welcome to the Aperture Science East Research Facility. Your test begins in roughly 168 hours.

Sweet! A portal mod coming, like, soon, and not in some abstract date in the future!

How difficult is Gamma energy, it looks bloody impossible.. but trailers always look like that :D

It seems to be about as tough as Portal. That was my goal anyway. You may find it easier or harder depending on your particular skill set. Some testers had little trouble flying through the levels, (figuratively and literally) while some struggled a bit, but still managed to figure it out. If you do want a challenge, three of the advanced chambers were designed to be nigh impossible.

Rest assured that an independent panel of testers has determined that this is nowhere near as hard as Portal Prelude.

Just an FYI, you have had other people tested this mod, right? Beta testers are VERRY important. I've had to many mods where the author makes the mistake of assuming the solution to a puzzle will be found by the players.

I've beta tested this quite a bit with several different people. The frustration of others caused a large number of tweaks and, in some cases, a complete overhaul of the chamber. I tried to follow the "Rule of Three" (though frequently I extend it to five) mentioned in one of the Valve commentaries whenever I could. For the most part, the game mechanics are handed to you the first time you encounter them. Just in case you're wondering how some of these levels were originally set up, check out the advanced chambers. I learned quite a few things from the tests, most important among them that things I think are incredibly simple and obvious just aren't. I plan to talk more about this in a feature after the mod's release so I can be more specific and get into some details and examples.
