Post news Report RSS Off Limits - styx before and after

As I did with my work on Mirror's Edge I took some before and after shots of one of our levels Styx, showing what a year of extra work can do!

Posted by on

As we take it a bit slow on the development of Off Limits for the holidays I decided to update my portfolio with final shots of both levels I worked on which can be seen here. I also made some backups of older versions of both levels and other materials for future releases. While doing this I had a quick run through of the old Styx and boy was I surprised to play it again after a year! I decided to take some screenshots of it and create this before and after post as I did with some of my Mirror's Edge work which can be seen here. I wont explain what changes were made in each shot, I'm sure the images speak for themselves. A Russia before and after post will follow as well.

About the release of Off Limits, we will start development again after the holidays to crunch out the remaining items on our todo list and fix the crash bug.

Anyone else like the majority of the older ones better?

I dunno, I must just be weird.

I really don't feel the same way. But hell, it's always been awesome.

I believe the old ones have a bit darker feeling while the newer ones to seem more modern and new.

The feeling of the city changed completely, from an average run down town to a run down Tokyo with all these neon signs... Plus that fading/fog limiting the view in the new version... I can see why you would like the older version better, alhtough i think that the newer are better. The old version seems to be colder/more sterile than the newer version, as if there was no sign of Life in this city for a long time.

I agree that both are good, though the old ones do feel a little unpolished in comparison to the new.
I would prefer blending the two. Take the more 'unfinished' old one's style and have it as the outskirts of the main areas of the new 'polished' ones.
This would provide for massive maps that feel like a true city: from the high-life down town to the long-since-obsolete industrial areas and half-dead bedroom communities turned minority slums.

Why not include both versions in the release? Like, Styx 1984 and 2014 levels.

The older ones had far too much brown lighting, which made them warmer and less gritty. The new maps are also much more like Tokyo, which is great for a Cyberpunk mod.

tbh, I wouldn't mind playing the old one, they both look great, just in another style
