Report article RSS Feed Off Limits beta released!

The first public beta of Off Limits is out. Servers are up and running! Download it and join the fun!

Posted by Wesley on Jul 3rd, 2011

You can download Off Limits through our ModDB downloads page or from Desura. It's a 290MB download and a 600MB install. I have set up 8 servers (4 US and 4 EU). I want to thank all hosts for helping me setting them up and giving us their services! If anyone wants to host their own server please let me know in PM so I can update the server list! (US) (US) (US) (US) (UK) (UK) (NL)

If you encounter any bugs or other issues or have constructive feedback please post it on our ModDB forums in the correct section.

I made an Off Limits guide. There you will find everything you need to know about Off Limits. So before asking questions please check if you can't find the answers here. Guide link can be found above on our ModDB profile or by clicking the image below.

For those who participated in our closed beta a few months ago, this is the changelist we made since then.

I'm getting an error when trying to install with Desura:
"There was an error during the gathering information process and it has been stopped.
Status: No files from this mods branch (4294967295) could be found. [38.108]"

It could easily be something wrong on my end, but I'm not sure. I haven't used Desura very much.

Desura isn't update yet with the latest build. It shouldn't work atm, the ModDB guys seem a bit slow this weekend (they probably have a lot on their minds atm :) )

I'd like to see slower movement speeds on the characters, a little less health, and ironsights. Other that that it's pretty good for a beta.

Taking this out of beta should've been a higher priority, regardless of it being the anniversary or not.

lol, we didn't wait for the anniversary... We just didn't have time to work on it. This is all done by 2 people, we can't fly and have other stuff to do. That's why I'm sure there is still stuff to be fixed in this update as well. We're taking it one step at a time and fix the most important issues each update. I hope you understand. We can't however update stuff and fix bugs if you guys don't play it and post feedback and bugs in our "bugs" forums here on ModDB!

deadrawkstar Jul 8 2011, 3:50am replied:

To me, the bugs seem like a lesser problem - what needs to be fixed is the capture points - they cant have a one-way wall, where you can shoot out, but not in.

Or has this been fixed?

I don't think you get the game play still. The Juggernaut is the guy to kill, he CAN NOT enter a spawn point. If a team decides to camp (which doesn't happen so far) they leave their Juggernaut exposed and he will get shot. When he dies the spawn point in which those campers are staying in will open up causing mass murder + loss round/match for that team. The protected spawn points give the player some time to adjust after being shot giving them time to spawn and not get instant spawn raped/killed as it happens in a lot of games. If this were the case here then people would complain about that as well (there's always something bad about anything, what to do?!).

I'm worrried that this could turn out like most HL2 MP mods. Another well designed and beautiful mod that no one plays.

Looks like it already happened. Downloaded it launched it and saw that absolutely no one is playing it.

I think most people download it and play it for the first time on a public server. Look around a bit (instead of playing the game). Making it less fun for those who are at that time actually playing the game. Also we know there's a flaw where you need 4 players to start a match (most people leave before the game starts). Some things to address. On the upside, on the next update people will also have to download less and be able to join servers quicker after downloading (and then I hope most people will download it around the time of it's release and then mass join servers). I might have an update this week ready if all goes well (working on it now). It wont have huge fixes but some are quite important for game play already. I'll also for the next update try and work out a system so people can join in at some given times a day to help populate servers a bit easier. Although we have about 1500 downloads, it's still nothing and obviously not enough to have people playing 24/7...

Sounds like you guys need to turn your PR up to 11, otherwise this will suffer the same fate as NeoTokyo and all the rest.

Not entirely sure how you can accomplish that without hiring a dedicated PR guy, but I wish you the best all the same.

Incidentally, does anyone know why I get a "your map differs from the server's" message? Not sure how that can be the case when I'm using the same version as everyone else. Unless there's been an update I don't know about?

I'm sorry but, is your developer team mentally retarded? The default key binds are so terrible it makes me nauseous. It kind of makes me want to believe that you have no idea what good user experience means....
