As PCGamer and RockPaperShotgun announced at the end of last month, InterWave and Valve will be hosting a Free Weekend for Nuclear Dawn on Steam between Thursday 15th and Monday 19th this month.

Last week InterWave released a massive update for Nuclear Dawn, bringing a host of new content to the game ahead of this weekend's event (the full change log can be read here).

Amongst a wealth of bug fixes and general improvements, the release includes the introduction of a new kit for the Stealth class, an interactive single-player training mode, and the first all-new weapon unlock.

The new Stealth kit allows players to equip a machine pistol, sidearm and remotely detonating explosives, opening up the sneaky role of the Stealth Saboteur.

Then there is the interactive training mode, which consists of 3x RTS Commander courses and 4x FPS Soldier courses.

Once the FPS and RTS courses are complete, they each earn their own respective achievement. Budding Commanders who have taken the time to study and complete the RTS training course will now receive priority access during in-game selection.

Those who play Nuclear Dawn during the free weekend will have the opportunity to rank up and get their hands on unlocks at twice the pace, with Double XP running until Monday.

Additionally, a new sidearm upgrade (the P-900) has been added to the game. This weapon replaces the Bag-90 sidearm when equipped, and may be used by all classes. Players that own Nuclear Dawn before Monday 19th will have the P-900 automatically unlocked and immediately equipable from the 'Extras' tab of the new Career page.

Players who pre-ordered Nuclear Dawn before release will now also find their Veteran Medal on this page, with the option to disable or enable it in-game.

Those who do not own Nuclear Dawn before Monday 19th will have the opportunity to unlock the P-900 at a later date, though the Veteran Medal remains an exclusive asset.

If you are on the fence about whether Nuclear Dawn is worth your time, we encourage you to check out our videos here on IndieDb, as well as the wealth of awesome YouTube videos created by third parties. Below is the latest tutorial video, which covers an overview of Commander-Soldier relations.

The critics have given Nuclear Dawn a wealth of positive feedback. Links to most reviews can be found on the game's website - but here are just a few to get an insight into of what people are saying:

Destructoid - "An exhilarating multiplayer experience."
PCGamer - "Nuclear Dawn proves that the Source engine isn't outdated just yet."

FiringSquad - "Fun, fast paced action."
FPSGuru - "Nuclear Dawn is a refreshingly polished product."
Gaming Nexus - "An ever changing experience that is engaging throughout each match."

It is a good game. The only problem was the release so close to the big AAA games of this year like BF3 and others. I guess this hurt their sales pretty big. (I don't have numbers ofc.)

To sad they couldn't release it in summer.

Is it only me or is this just like the Empires mod?

It looks dangerously similar from the gameplay I've seen.
