Welcome to the second mission release of The Dark Mod: The Tears of Saint Lucia. If you liked the first teaser demo Thiefs Den, you'll absolutely love Saint Lucia. It's a full-sized mission demonstrating the current state of The Dark Mod's development, packed into jdude's stunning world design. The map for this mission is at least five times larger than our previous demo, Thiefs Den, and is on par with the map sizes of Thief: Deadly Shadows. It showcases many features that were not present in our first demo, including the purchase menu, flashbombs, swim-able water and AI conversations.

This map demonstrates the progress that has been made on The Dark Mod over the past eight months or so since our last demo. Although the mod itself is still not ready for release, I think you will be impressed with how beautiful and immersive this map is. Although there are still some bugs and unfinished features, it is an excellent example of what fan missions for The Dark Mod will be like.

Yeah, the first mission doesn't work and your forum is totally borked. You have to REGISTER TO USE THE SEARCH! Also you can't register accounts. What the crap?

Anyway the first mission won't even load up. The image of the title screen shows and then it crashes with a "couldn't load game dynamic library" error.

Same load game dynamic library error. I'm using the steam version. Doesn't work at all.

In the package you can see a DLL file, you have to put it on your D3 folder, not the mod folder. Same way the old map.

The DLL file goes in the mods folder, C:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\doom 3\saintlucia because Doom3 detects the mod by finding the DLL in the folder, or finding a pk4 with the file. However, I have copied the mod's dll to the base directory for doom 3 (which wouldn't make sense because then you can only ever have 1 mod installed) as you've suggested but the results are still the same as I expected. "couldn't load game dynamic library" Maybe some time in the future we'll see working releases for the steam version?

No, Doom 3 detects mods by any kind of pk4 even empty ones, not DLL, the dll included in the mod is not part of the game code, but an external graphic library. I'm talking about DevIL.dll, not the one in the game00.pk4.

All you have to do is to place saintlucia folder into doom 3, so:

C:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\doom 3\saintlucia

and the DevIL.dll go to:

C:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\doom 3

I tried now on the Steam vesion of D3 and it works.

I'm so glad that it explains that. :) I can't figure out why theres not an installer and just pure files. I had thought we advanced past those stages in technology...

Anyway, the original thiefs den has the DevIL.dll but the ONLY dll in the second game is the gamex86.dll

Weird, uhm try to redownload it and extract the content to the desktop first, so you can move the files manually.

Or try to use the DevIL.dll of the previous release, maybe it works.

COMPLETELY unacceptable load times. I simply cannot bring myself to wait 5 minutes for a single map to load. and then another 5 because i chose to modify my screen resolution.

um... huh? changing res took ~5 seconds on my rig. level took ~45 seconds.

As one of the developers of The Dark Mod I appreciate your comment, but load times will vary from system to system Mr. Kadish, sorry. What are the specifications of your system? Back when I first bought the original Thief: The Dark Project, I used to sit and wait for the levels to load...sometimes for up to 4 or 5 minutes. It was acceptable because the levels were large and my computer was slow. It wasn't the programs fault. The developers of Thief had optimized the resources within the game to the best of their ability, as have we. This level is quite large. My own computer is nothing spectacular. I run an old Athlon XP 2800+, with 1Gig of ram and a Geforce FX 5200. The map loads for me in just under 2 minutes and 35 seconds...yes, I timed it with a stopwatch. Quite acceptable for a level of this size and complexity. You only have a long wait the first time the map loads, if you die and restart...all the materials are cached. As for screen res changes, sorry...we didn't code the doom 3 engine. You'll have to take that up with Id software. If you're running a better system than I am, and still experience slow loading times, you may need to optimize your computer....defrag and turn off any unnecessary programs that are running in the background.

I remember when Thief was newly released and I installed it on my 233mhz PC, 32mb ram and a S3Virge 2mb graphics card. Good times, good times! >3<

Yup, I can imagine. :) I had a 400mhz AMD K62, 64megs of ram...and some sickly little video card that could only run the game in software mode. lol A lot of games have shorter load times now because the developers split the map up into smaller chunks and then have loading zones. TDM, like Thief, is not the type of game that benefits from loading zones. Each map should ideally be a single large map.

So, you get hit with a load time no matter what. Either you sit through it all at once in a single map, or you get hit with smaller load times, but over the course of segments of a single map. I prefer a single load. I also want to repeat what I said above, for anyone else who might have doubts, reloads after dying are fast...because all the assets are already loaded. You only deal with the long load time if you're loading the map from the very start.

Hey this is SG from TTLG forums.... Not true. I have a better video card than you, and i've tried it on two different pcs, one better than the other (one has 6800xt the other has 8600) and I STILL get long loading times after the first load. Unless you are talking about it takes so long everytime you load up saint lucia. In that case that really stinks. :( (I know i'm complaining, i'm sorry... it just takes so damn long. Though I agree with you, I like a single load better than multiple loads. Makes the game seem more real, plus it's annoying having a load every time you get to a certain area.

worth noting that it's a user mistake to change any graphical settings after you load up the assets. it then reloads the assets. all games do this. change the settings before you play the game & it's not an issue.

Strange, the game crashes with an "Error Report" message every time I leave the map after completing mission objectives. I get the "Mission Completed" message prior before my game exits and gives me the error.

It seems the DevIL.dll file is NOT in this most recent demo. Did you guys forget to include it?

I had to re-download the original teaser demo in order to get the DLL to run this most recent demo. (I never downloaded the mod on this PC.)

It works fine after I got the DevIL.dll file from the original demo though. This is a great mod, and I recommend going through the trouble of downloading the original teaser demo to play this newest demo.

It IS there, but it's in the top level directory when you run the auto-extract file. If you extract into your main Doom 3 directory, as instructed, then the dll will be in it's proper place. No need to go back and re-download Thief's Den. :-) Hope that helps!
