Post news Report RSS NEW: Detailed Statistics Feature

Ever wanted to track the popularity of your mod and the impact fresh news, downloads and media has? Now you can - thanks to the new detailed statistics feature.

Posted by on

Since ModDB's v4 launch in November 2007, the site has been quietly collecting daily statistics such as the number of profile visitors, downloads, videos and news reads you serve to our community. Until now these statistics have been hidden, so there was no way to answer questions like:

  • How popular is my mod? Is it getting more or less popular?
  • How many downloads are you serving (including new and old files)?
  • Did the news I post on the homepage increase my mods popularity? What about the headline?

Now, thanks to the new statistics system - you can view all of this information and much much more. In fact you can view games, mods, groups, engines and even your own personal statistics. Accessing these statistics is simple, on download, video and profile pages you will generally find text like Views: 10 (2 today) - look on right right menu here to see this. All you need to do is click this link to view the corresponding daily statistics. An example of what the stats look like for the HL2 Jailbreak mod is shown below:

These statistics update daily. Also like I have done above (just like a youtube video), you can embed this graph on your mods homepage, blog and other sites so you can track your contents popularity without even visiting ModDB (or you can show it to your friends and brag - your choice).

This is exactly what developers need. It seems like the equivelent of what Steam provides for those who put their games on steam.

I'm thinking of creating a "beacon" for you guys to add to your homepage, so the number of visitors your homepage receives also shows up on this graph and you can compare that with the number of ModDB profile visitors you get. Is that something you are interested in?

Yes that would be great, the top-lists of moddb are semi-defunct now (they don't get as many votes anymore) and this would be a very welcome addition to a mod's website in my opinion.

That would be cool. Like I said, more statistics always = better.

What would also be really sweet is to be able to see what sites are linking to your ModDB profile and thus where your traffic is coming from.

Ok.. there is a real bad bug/problem. :P

If you type in a date that is not yet available (for example 2009-01-01 - 2008-11-05) firefox/flash will crash/hang up.

Edit: Same in Internet Explorer.. def. Flash related.

I didn't actually code the Flash Graph - only the backend stats system so there isn't much I can do about this. I will continually update the Flash software so hopefully this will be patched. Besides if you enter bogus dates it is your own damn fault for the error ;)

Id like to see a spot where it gives the downloads/visits statistics ... although it could be hard/distortive to do when people release multiple downloadable files :/ ..

The way it is now, it just shows what mods are watched more ... i would like to know the ratio so i can see which mods are just being watched alot, and which mods are actually good for a download ...

Thanks :) Do you mind telling which frameworks modDB uses? Zend Framework? Or just normal PHP files?

ModDB is mostly custom built - however we use JQUERY for Javascript Jquery.com and a heavily modified Code Igniter for PHP Codeigniter.com

This is an extremely nice feature.

Since we are naturally a more-than-average nerdy group of people, we of course love statistics and numbers and such, this sort of thing is like an early Christmas present!
