One of the most unique and talked about features of the mod is the 'Commander Mode'? What inspired this idea and how hard has it been to implement it into the Half-Life engine?

I think Flayra was inspired by his love of RTS games. He really wanted to take the best parts of a game like C&C or WC and replace the boring AI-peons with real people, and make this new kind of social strategy game. He has worked on RTS games in the industry as a programmer for some years, so he was pretty comfortable in that coding role. Putting it into the HL engine hasn't been easy, but he's the most gifted C++ guru I've ever met, so there was no doubt he'd get it working. And he did!
Also notable is the lovely little trailer they've put up, grab it by going to there site and selecting a mirror ;)
Theres more, as If that isnt enough Natural Selectiony goodness, you need to check out Readyroom.Org who have updated there Marine Weapons Section with some lovely screenshots.
Am I babbling? No. Well heres the last and final tidbit...
PlanetNS.Com has been open for a few days and is simply gorg and chocker (thanks Cilla Black ;)) with Natural Selection goodness.

I loved the AVI preview
Is it just me or does the gun with the horizontal magazine look too WW2ish ?
The artist did indeed receive inspiration from ww2 side loading weapons. Not a bad thing, especially since the rest is certainly not something you'd see in ww2.
I know...that's the whole thing - it's out of place, i think
