Cool idea. The awesome thing about the tools and our modding setup for NS2 is that this would be really easy. I think it would be no more than a couple dozen lines of Lua (which is a pretty simple language) and possibly a couple particle effects which you can build visually using our Cinematic Editor. 99% of the NS2 game code is written in Lua and we will be releasing it all with the game. So you can change the resource model when welding alien carcasses, disable the fade away time, etc.
Of course, mod code will all auto-download and won't muck up your install so you can always play "vanilla" whenever you want. We think NS2 is going to have the most creative and prolific mod community ever!

It's extreamly good that you are supporting the modding community, most of the new games are terrible with it and that's why they fail to keep up the old games income is because they 'don't want anyone to steal their game'.
That's awesome, I see you guys don't plan on forgetting your roots any time soon. That's also some great incentive for people to get into the modding scene, I know I'm gonna broaden my knowledge of Lua for this. I'd pre-order it now, but I'd rather have it linked to my Steam account.
What about a feature that lets marine take weaponry from other dead marines? Aliens probably would be able to assimilate, points from their dead allies but this might turn into a friendly fire frenzy with people stealing each others corpses...
