In approximately 2 weeks time, v4 of the Mod DB shall be launched after 9 months of development. A lot of carefully planned effort has gone into making the next version of this site as good as it can be, so I'd like to introduce some of the changes now, and help you prepare for the transition.

  • New design - Totally different design with new menus, logos and colors. The underlying structure remains the same with profiles playing a big role in v4. The design should feel familiar quick.
  • Platform support - We want to support development from mods to full on games on all mediums, and with platforms like the XBOX360, PS3, PSP and Nintendo DS opening up to developers, we also aim to open up the Mod DB and allow these people to list their titles.
  • Groups - Game / mod development is all about working with a team to create something great. Groups have been introduced to allow you to register teams, share content among the members and link together all your creations. Do you want to start a mapping group now you can. Has your group made various mods and addons for those mods? Now you can link these together and post news updates.
  • Engines - A key part of game development is choosing the engine you want to use. I'm not aware of any site which lists all games engines available so we hope to change that. It'll be interesting to see just how many games have been built on top of the popular Quake engines - soon you will be able to!
  • Standalone games as games - At the moment standalone games are listed in the mod section of the Mod DB. This does not make a lot of sense so they will be merged into the game listing alongside the commercial titles where they rightfully belong.
  • Addon DB merged - Addons such as maps, models, skins, textures and more will now be showcased and browsable on the Mod DB.
  • Community controlled content - The site is opening up totally. As a member of the community you will be able to post features, articles, add games, engines, groups and more - the way it should be.
  • Blogs & Friends - We also have all that hyped up (but largely disappointing) social network stuff everyone talks about like friends and blog support. So if you think you have something important to say, soon you will be able to say it.
  • Video support - For the first time ever videos can be uploaded to profiles. They don't work just yet - but will very soon which for the multimedia lovers will be a big +

So as you can see there is a lot of change in store. So please bear with us over the next few weeks as we roll it out, because it's not going to be easy! - Mod DB Team

Also a full time job for an Editor in Chief has opened up at the Mod DB. If you love game development and have a passion for writing and big communities, please head here for the details and apply.

hmm, i didnt know that moddb was on even v2! sounds great tough. searching by engine is like those car sites that search by monthy payment. its a really great idea! i also hope like most of us, that none of the mods gett messed up. the organization sounds a lot tidier than now, but it COULD stay this way, but change once in a while is good. keep up the good work guys!

It is going to be a messy deployment which may require up to a few hours downtime, since Mod DB v4 is not compatible with Mod DB v3 and essentially has to be placed "over the top"

I will try and make the switchover as seamless as possible, but it will be tough to do - so it maybe hard to run an IRC party since past deployments only ever took a few hours. This will take a day most likely assuming everything goes to plan.

If I recall correctly, v2 took a few hours. :paranoid:

Just take your time and lock down both sites until the transition is made. Better a smooth transition and a couple of hours without ModDB than having a huge transition mess WTF experience :/

Will my moddb RSS feeds need updating to anew URL for V4 or are they staying put?

v4 is not compatible with v3, all urls have changed including RSS feeds I am afraid. Also everything is RSS'd in v4 so you can get feeds of anything you want pretty much

Oh and our engine list is not nearly that detailed, it merely provides an overview of the engines functionality. The main purpose served is seeing which games are created for which engines. If in the future we feel the need to include all that information we shall attempt to
