We are moving to IndieDB!

As we announced in the update on Friday, we are now officially going to use UDK to go indie with Mindworld. In order to not confuse people regarding this modpage, we are not going to update this modpage any further.

Of course, this does not mean we have stopped development, we are simply moving to IndieDB.

Why we are moving to UDK instead of going for the Source Engine

Not developing Mindworld in the Source Engine does not mean that the game is losing quality in any way. The number one reason why we decided to go for UDK is because we want to deliever the best quality for the game. Developing with the Source Engine means that we are limited by a lot things and that simply does not allow us to go for our unique and original ideas and plans for the overall concept. Also, by using the UDK engine instead of the Source Engine, everyone is able to play the game without owning Half Life 2.

Why should I keep tracking Mindworld on IndieDB?

We are still going to create a game that has great story telling, is concentrating on the atmosphere of the game and connecting with the player's emotions in the most ways possible. Therefor, nothing for you guys has changed, except that you are going to get a higher quality game plus top notch graphics as a side-bonus.

Also, we have the right people and connections to people to develope Mindworld with the new Unreal Development Kit. So, this is great news for you guys, as we stepped up our game and went to the next level. You can continue to look forward to this, we are just going a step further in developing.

I hope that everything about this topic is clear by now and all of you guys can continue to enjoy the progress of this project by tracking it and being part of it. Another little announcement is that we are going to publish special issues that present each teammember on each episode and his/her work in the team in more detail. It's going to be similar to a making-of like Mass Effect has done it already. Although those episodes may not get pubslished regulary, because the development of Mindworld is always going to have a higher priority.

Until then, I hope to see you guys on IndieDB to keep up the great support we have experienced from all of you so far.

We are always publishing the monthly article on the last Friday of each month.

IMO todays modders/developers are far more ambitious than Valve is willing to recognize, given Sources long standing pathetic entity limits and overall lack of power and flexibility.

For a projects such as this, these are essential engine attributes if you want quality cinematic visuals and good game-play. I don't blame the groups that are changing over one bit.

@Rukus_:
Simply give me one reason why we should stay with Source and I can immediately response with two arguments against it.

Well, you've lost my track. Though you may regain it depending on a number of things.

There's too many good source mods that are dead or abandoned and it's unfortunate to see another leave the engine.

Now you see...I want to make a mod but I know Source can't handle the scope. There would be loading screens every 2 minutes. The problem is Unreal is mesh based right? Which means modelling? I know Source very well but Unreal I can't go beyond the stage of "Ooooohhh look I made a box!"

Do your mappers have any tips for how to learn the UDK?

I wish you would all stop bitching about source
Give Valve a Chance Ok Orange box is outdated and lacks what UDK and Cry has but really just look a few years back on 2 occasions who was everyone wanting to mod for?... Source of course. Back when HL1 came out the engine looked amazing... Then HL2/OB and yet again they set teh standard for others to follow
The new Engine will be awesome when it finally does arrive with HL3/EP3
I dont blame you for going to UDK and making it Indie but dont bitch about Source It has been the best modding resource the world has ever had..
Personally my money is on Valve to shock and awe us all again in a few years
:P

Or, you know, with that new huge release from Valve, oh, it's called... "Portal 2" anyone, the engine is already up to UDK's standards with alien swarm, and it will be up to Cry's standards by the time Portal 2 gets here. However, I can't blame the dev team for moving indy, I mean, if you were putting this much work into something I'd want to do it professionally too. Valve needs to allow indy development on Source, not just hand out licenses to people they happen to see and think are good...

We are not bitching about the Source Engine, it's a great engine overall. The thing we faced is that we want to start developing Mindworld right now, because we have the member it takes and a good concept behind the game. The good thing that comes with Source is a lot of attention and a wider audience (at least in the beginning) and the negative side is that we run into a lot more problems than we do with UDK and some ideas would not be realizeable at all. That said, we would cut original and unique ideas and that changes the overall gameplay for Mindworld drastically. Sure, UDK has negative aspects aswell, but the positive side definitely won.

All that IS NOT a general statement. AGAIN, this is our decision, because we find the UDK fitting a lot better to OUR game idea. It may look totally different for other mods or games.

cheers.

I swear, mod community these days is absurd...

This mod on the source engine had: A nice gameplay, pretty nice graphs, originality.

Now as an Indie game on UDK, it has: Even better gameplay, another style of graphs but still good looking, the same originality and finaly, easier development.

People should rage over fake/fail mods, not on the ones that actually wants to improve their quality.

I keep my track and I still wish you the best of luck.
