MERP TC has received a C&D letter from WB. Keep an eye out for news.

Middle Earth Role-Playing TC for Skyrim has received a cease and desist letter from Warner Bros. Enterprises. Development has halted in compliance with this but all is not over...
We have a lawyer from the Organisation for Transformative Works (OTW) on our side, currently aiding us in our appeal for being a transformative piece...

We also need our fans to support us too, use the twitter hashtag #SaveMERP to inform everyone; friends, celebrities and journalists of our situation. As many of you will ahve seen we have caused quite the stir on almost every gaming forum around so If we can show WB how many people are behind our mod we may be able to sway them in our negotiations.
There is now also a twitter feed at the side of this moddb page following MiddleEarthsBane and AlasdairHurst. You can also show your support by liking and sharing these pages and posts on Facebook!: -Save MERP - Official MERP Page

Stay hopeful, and most of all keep checking on our moddb page, our facebook and our bethblog thread for more news as it happens. Also Twitter. @middleearthbane or @alasdairhurst

Do you think that you guys could pursue this in the direction of proving that Warner Bros doesn't have a game Like MERP would be so ergo MERP couldn't threaten their sales?

I ask because I think that the Halo mod for EaW was given a C&D letter during the development of Halo Wars because EaW's ground combat made it a competitor to Halo Wars.

Oh come on! The way I see it, license rights originally serve to make sure the right person gets credited for work (i.e. MONEYS). But this damn thing is a free mod. This is PURE human effort to make the (gaming) world a better place. This is ridiculous. I am SO SICK OF THIS **** HAPPENING ALL AROUND THE WORLD >:(

You know what we should do. All of us indies should really start revolting **** like this. All of the indies put together, that's a game development force that not a single corporate pig can even hope to reach.
We should start merging ideas, even games, and ONLY work with unlicensed stuff, i.e. our own, and expand upon that. I'm picturing a 'world of games' that's completely cut off from all commercialism, instead relying on stuff like Kickstarter, donations and the like, freely sharing ideas, code, even entire game worlds. But the most important part, if we want to beat stuff like this, is that we do it TOGETHER as much as possible.
It's kinda hard to put in words what I mean, and it would be even harder to actually accomplish; but, I think, if everybody made an effort in GROUP, we could *easily* trump the game world as it is now, and even redefine it to OUR liking. To the GAMER's liking.
Stuff like the modDB website is already a great start to this. But it's not enough. It's still too individual.
Creating games, just like creating paintings, or music, etc., is, at least in my eyes, an art. Art CANNOT be held back for any reason.

TL;DR: Create our own icons. Our own Mario's, our own Sonics, our own Altairs. Our own Mushroom Kingdoms, our own Black Mesa's, our own Kirby Funlands. Then start sharing them across all game developers that have a good use for them, not just the ones that created them.

great idea, something like that would either recreate or even destroy gaming corporations of course the stuff shared could not fall into corporation hands, they got to make their own:D

Well no, my friend! I'm sorry to say but that's actually the worst possible idea, it makes us act JUST the same as them!

The moment they WOULD ask for our stuff to put to use, THAT's when we win.

But still, it should be shared! The only difference is that there wouldn't be a chance in hell some corporation would EVER get his hands on a license stating it's theirs. Because it's the world's.

I'd still hand them anything they'd want to use. Together with their *****.

I agree very much with this, unfortunately the community where I've been working to try and get this as close to a reality as possible is near dead at the moment; these things just seem to be so difficult in practice.

Are you sure WB can do that? They do not own any rights on the book.

Thales_The_Unstable Sep 8 2012 replied:

They do not own the rights on the book. They literally own only the rights on video game material related to the Middle-Earth world, if I'm not mistaken. And I also believe, they own it purely because they had the funds to buy ownership.
