Epic announces the second MSU contest with $1,000,000 in prizes, this time for the Unreal Engine 3

Posted by on

Unreal modders start bustin' out those editors, because the next 'Make Something Unreal' contest is on its way. The contest is divided up into four phases, with categories for everything from mutators to level design and asset creation. Educational categories also allow for students to submit school projects as well. According to the rules, judging for the first phase commences June 27, 2008 with the final deadline for submissions of phase four on August 31, 2009. Prizes will include Intel Velocity Micro PCs, software development products and multiple cash purses. The grand prize will of course be a license for the Unreal Engine 3, essentially paving the way to turn your mod into a fully commercial product. Like previous winner, Red Orchestra, you too can go from mod-maker to game developer. For all the details, check out the website for the Make Something Unreal Contest.

Lol... noobs.
I already have a licensed, retail version of Unreal Engine 3. I don't actually need to enter this contest.

Sucks to be you. Also, I'm older. Kid.

Why? Get 1,000,000 and you can purchase the license and still have so much money left over. haha

not much. It would probably cost you about 0.8 or so just for the licence (but you would have that 0.2 left over to buy that ferrari youve always wanted)

I really like how Epic do this. I am not familiar with the unreal engine and it's code, level editing etc, but I know that it's a very flexible engine, and what I like about this competition is that those who were making great mods are really going to go all out on their mods to win the grand prize, this competition gives motivation to modders and I like that, if this gives modders the motivation to push their mod out the door, then i'm all for it.

THIS IS AWESOME.

Too bad I've only dwiddled with the Source engine, despite my constant nagging of myself to look into the UE. Think I can learn enough of it in time to become a decent participant?

There are already some really great looking UE3 mods/total conversions that are well on their way to the finish line. They may not be close to that line yet, but they are certainly not going to give up by the looks of things.

Wish I knew - I wasn't around for that one. The vets over at BeyondUnreal might know though. Even Epic are failing to mention that this is the third iteration of the competition. I think the first wasn't sponsored by Intel, and might not have had all the big prizes.

Not a "Best In Sound FX/Music" to be found. Whilst I realize that this has nothing to do with the engine itself, audio has a huge part to play in all games and mods. Still a fantastic contest though, and good luck to all who enter!

I concur. It seems to me that almost every category is focused towards mapping, and not really to any other aspects; there are six 'pure' mapping categories, but only one 'pure' programming and 3d category - the rest are team efforts.

Well, since most people's first venture into modding is making maps, it's pretty normal they have so much categories for it. And yes indeed, Valve - this is something to ponder about :)

But not everyone is a mapper. People like animators (who do such a skilled job), don't get any recognition in this competition at all?

well, ambershee, for animation, you could do a machinima, I believe there is a category for that.

Machinima may require animation, but it can easily be done without it. The vast majority of machinima work would be in matinee, and the mapping side of things.

I could yet not get a total conversion to work with UT3...and they expect us to "make something unreal".
Their UDN help lacks, there is almost no information about programming in UT3, and there is no information about how to create a mod.
It's all been different in UT2004, I can only guess how it could be done, but it never worked. Otherwise I'd have started months ago.
This new engine is extremly awesome, but theres a small problem when there is a thick door which blocks you from entering it o_O
