Hi all,
Just a quick update to let you know I have re-uploaded the original mod for you to download (my fault, should have been back up long ago) and that now have a new IndieDB page for those of you who wish to follow our indie progress.
Also be sure to check out our official website where I have also been sprucing up the design and working on getting our and forums up and running. (Apologies if it's a bit rough around the edges, I had to kinda throw it together in 2 days) :s
I know that some of you feel let down the recent announcement, even angry, for what it's worth, I can honestly say that wasn't our intent. I have written up a post on my development blog giving a more in-depth look at the story behind our move to indie, which I hope will give you a clearer understanding of the how it all came to be.
In related news, Dan and I will also be appearing on Podcast17 this week to talk about Dear Esther Indie and answer your questions, so if you do have anything you want to put forward to us, just email questions@podcast17.com or post a comment to the agenda located at Podcast17.com. This show will be recorded live and streamed over their shout cast server. Details on how to connect to this live stream can be found over on their website.
Thanks,
--Rob

That post didn't make me feel any better (in fact maybe a little worse), its basically saying "sorry we deceived you but oh well". Like I said previously, this shitstorm wouldn't have spawned if you said WAYYY back before Christmas that you talked with Valve. Then people would have been prepping for you to go indie even before you got an answer from Valve. If you had done that instead of posting loads of media in between then and announcing this no one would be mad. The game community (especially one that is as active in watching development as Moddb) is a very touchy business, and once you have a trusting community, they have to be 0 sure of your intentions.
I will buy your game, but only on the condition that it does not break the $10USD mark.
Cry more. High quality comes at a price. The developer deserves compensation for providing such high quality. The only **** storm is being created by people who are unable to fork up the cash.
Incidentally, I will gladly pay $20-30 for this upcoming masterpiece. Any more than that, and I will have to think for a while. But I will probably buy it still.
Troll more
I never said I didn't support them, they just seem to have a hard time understanding why people would be angry, and people like you aren't helping calm people down, and if you don't want people to calm down then you're a troll. Either that or you're an idiot and only read the first and last sentence of my comment.
I apologize if I'm trying to keep the flames down by being the neutral party in this scenario, if ya feel like trollin' you're talking to the wrong guy.
as much as I agree with some of what you said, you are definitely not neutral, mate.
Agreed.
He isn't neutral, of course he is, he's a deceived fan...
Did you even go read the link he provided?
I dont think Valve will.
And besides what do you mean?
Abandon it like they did CSS?
Or
Over-inflate it with garbage maps that no one plays and dumb weapons?
He's stated before that he was spending whole months FULL TIME working on the mod. If you honestly expected him to release it for free then you are a fool.
See, that's where you are wrong, in a couple of ways:
Working Full-time on a mod is far from unusual, mods like NMH2, Zeitgeist, Earth Special Forces etc. they are all working at least as focused and dedicated as this.
No, see this is where *you* are the fool. We have been following a *mod* on a site called *Mod* Database and it won second place in "upcomming *mod* of the year" as well as first place in the Editors' Choice in "Upcomming *mod* of the year"
So, explain to me exactly where we were supposed to start expecting an indie?
I dont understand why anyone would be angry, they should be happy that your moving forward! And the game is of a very high quality, I'd be happy to be able to support you in your endeavors!
Hey, can you classify this game as a first person ADVENTURE rather than shooter? Especially since you don't shoot anything.
thats what she said. (referring to the title)
I actually couldn't give a **** what anyone thinks about their decision, I'm going to buy it, I'm going to play it, I'm gonna love it, and none of you damn whiners can stop me, whatever side your on!
While a little disappointed with the transition to indie, when I think about it I can't actually pin down WHY I should feel betrayed.
I think that the transition is definitely beneficial on the whole, and while it has been unexpected and furthermore an annoyance - my anger lies with the unexpected transition, not with the cost.
I believe that everyone's point is solid - Dear Esther SHOULD have the right to earn money and be officially recognised and distributed; even on an old engine. However, I also believe that the community should have not been 'misled', or rather, been kept out of the loop of the discussions with Valve.
Either way, I'll pay, and I'll play. And either way, the modification is now a game. That's final.
