Report article RSS Feed Introducing Desura

After 2 years of stealth development, the team behind ModDB are proud to introduce Desura, our digital distribution service for games and mods.

Posted by INtense! on Dec 16th, 2009

In case you have been wondering why updates from ModDB staff have been a little slow lately, it is because the team has been busy working on a secret project codenamed Desura. While Desura is far from complete and far from perfect, it is time to stop working in silence and to start inviting select teams and members to the private beta we are launching today.

Desura (like Steam, D2D, Impulse, GamersGate etc) is a digital distribution service for PC gamers. Unlike these platforms however which are just shops with little to no interaction between the community and the content available, we aim to bring the power and openess of ModDB to digital distribution. We hope to achieve this in three ways:

Developer driven

We don't make games ourselves, so we are entirely focused on helping game developers and publishers show off their wares. All tools and functionality provided by Desura to game developers, are provided to empower them to create a better game, and share its features in all their glory with the Desura community. Developers control the flow of news, images, videos and content through their profiles - we don't put up walls and barriers.

Developer functionality

Community run

Every member of the Desura community can post comments, submit reviews and upload screenshots. We are not some mysterious editor in an ivory tower controlling content - it's anybody who can put pen to paper. Our screenshots aren't limited to some airbrushed press releases - they're taken by the gamers who want to make themselves heard.

User made content

There are plenty of great free mods and user made addons out there for games, which few know about and even fewer can install. Being able to customize your games is at the heart of everything Desura does, and we aim to make user made content as accessible as possible. From simple maps through to entire conversions and even whole new games, we hope to put what you want to play at your fingertips.

Mods & DLC

If you would like an invitation to the private beta, please post a comment here. Mod and indie game teams, if you would like to release or sell your game using Desura please contact us to discuss. We hope this is the first step to creating a platform which gives all developers on ModDB the opportunity to release their content to millions of gamers. We have worked damn hard and though a ton of work remains to be done, we hope you are as excited as us by this news. As always, please post your questions and I will endeavor to answer them, as I am sure you have many.

Wow, this is a fantastic idea. Its the perfect evolutionary leap forward. When I first visited Moddb I incorrectly presumed this site would become another advertising vehicle for the publishers who happily ride on the backs of modder's hard work.

My entire interest in PC gaming came from one specific mod for UT99 and it hasn't changed since then. Sure good games have come and gone over the last 10 years but the games that have stayed with me the longest all have active mod communities. Besides leaving positive feedback and passing the word to friends it was difficult or even impossible to find, install and support mods without going through multiple different providers.

I hope this becomes the Steam for the mod world and just as I was eager to be first in line with Steam I am wholeheartedly optimistic about this may become. In particular, I hope that it will allow users to give developers direct feedback and bug reporting and make paypal contributions to help keep our favorite projects afloat during development periods.

If this is commercially successful, it could help bring mods into the spotlight. As it is today, most people don't even know what a mod is...
Good luck!

Looks nice - two questions though:

- How do you handle privacy on Desura? - I hate all the statistics Steam gathers from me, thats just waaaay to far... at least it should be optional

- Since Desura is a standalone program like Steam what browser do you use to display webpages? the standard background IE or firefox/ something even better? - hate steam for using IE...

I hope moddb is ready to take this step - just imagine you sell games to ppl for two years and then go offline for whatever reason - all games lost and thousands of angry customers...

However, count me in for beta testing :)

I've just've read an article about Desura and i think it is an awesome project! This gives developers even more of a chance to show people their own content and ideas and share it with them.

This sure will have a huge impact when it's offical released!

I'll make sure to check this out!

And i personally think that MODDB itself was since it appeared on the net one of the best chances and places to gather for developers to show their ideas to each other. Keep it up!

Wow, Sounds like steam but with the things I keep wishing steam had. Although is it just going to be a website, or an actual program (like steam is)? <- Guess its a question everybody is asking as I look through the comments.

So I imagine its not possible to give out free downloads of mods. Do we get ads, pay 2 download, or are the downloads paid for when we purchase a game and the mods are downloaded free?

Can't wait to learn more about it. :)

This looks amazing.
It would be nice if Steam games could be updated from it.
I hate having these two different ones (Steam & Impulse) and then have some with no service keeping them together (Store bought or D2D).
On top of that, this will showcase amazing mods. This is really great.
I would also like a invite to the beta please.

I think this is a great idea. I often have trouble finding finished mods or knowing which of many different versions to download or if I need to download them all. This looks like it will help simplify that matter and also help me get further into the mod community (of which I am just starting to scratch the surface)
I would also love an invite to the beta (not to beg)
I cannot wait.

This looks to be something I would give a shot. It looks to be like a more polished thing of what ModJive attempted to do. which honestly it looks essentially like that but with much more features and ways to promote people's mods and games. I really hope this does well and I would gladly publish our team's mods here and even our future creations.

Keep up the good work, I hope this becomes a big success.
