Post news Report article RSS Feed Introducing Desura

After 2 years of stealth development, the team behind ModDB are proud to introduce Desura, our digital distribution service for games and mods.

Posted by INtense! on Dec 16th, 2009

In case you have been wondering why updates from ModDB staff have been a little slow lately, it is because the team has been busy working on a secret project codenamed Desura. While Desura is far from complete and far from perfect, it is time to stop working in silence and to start inviting select teams and members to the private beta we are launching today.

Desura (like Steam, D2D, Impulse, GamersGate etc) is a digital distribution service for PC gamers. Unlike these platforms however which are just shops with little to no interaction between the community and the content available, we aim to bring the power and openess of ModDB to digital distribution. We hope to achieve this in three ways:

Developer driven

We don't make games ourselves, so we are entirely focused on helping game developers and publishers show off their wares. All tools and functionality provided by Desura to game developers, are provided to empower them to create a better game, and share its features in all their glory with the Desura community. Developers control the flow of news, images, videos and content through their profiles - we don't put up walls and barriers.

Developer functionality

Community run

Every member of the Desura community can post comments, submit reviews and upload screenshots. We are not some mysterious editor in an ivory tower controlling content - it's anybody who can put pen to paper. Our screenshots aren't limited to some airbrushed press releases - they're taken by the gamers who want to make themselves heard.

User made content

There are plenty of great free mods and user made addons out there for games, which few know about and even fewer can install. Being able to customize your games is at the heart of everything Desura does, and we aim to make user made content as accessible as possible. From simple maps through to entire conversions and even whole new games, we hope to put what you want to play at your fingertips.

Mods & DLC

If you would like an invitation to the private beta, please post a comment here. Mod and indie game teams, if you would like to release or sell your game using Desura please contact us to discuss. We hope this is the first step to creating a platform which gives all developers on ModDB the opportunity to release their content to millions of gamers. We have worked damn hard and though a ton of work remains to be done, we hope you are as excited as us by this news. As always, please post your questions and I will endeavor to answer them, as I am sure you have many.

I'm a long time user of moddb for all my mod needs, but I shamefully admit that I had never registered. If Desura is as great as moddb I will love just the same. Looking forward to it.

I would love to be a part of this. It sounds like a really good idea but please don't let up on the "community friendly" spectrum in the future after release like most companies tend to do.

Wow, this looks so promising!

I really appreciate all the hard work you're putting into this whole effort to help the modding community. Mods are such a great way for developers to do very creative things and for gamers to experience unique game concepts.

And you guys are making the life of developers and mod lovers so much easier! And you bring a community of mod lovers together.

For that, I loooove you! Can't wait for this!

Well, my 2 cents comes down to a few things. How will this program be funded? Will it be off of donations and/or add funded, or will it be customer funded? Second I wonder if it will be a game shell that you need to have open to play games, or a shell for an online gamers community where people can find and download accomplished mods that ARE in a workable, open beta type stage or above. The website would become a hub for further detailed information perhaps. But if it is a free game shell that is free to access, well designed so that even if it did have ad coverage it wouldn't be in the way (which would allow game development companies to get ad coverage). Put with its ability to give people access to download and play without using the program as a shell for running game scenario, it would work well.

My technical terminology is terrible, don't know if anyone quite understands, or even cares lol for that matter, what I mean.

I would love to receive an invitation. Also in the future to look into plans for mod release. Will unreleased mods be able to create profiles for users to follow similar to the ones we have on moddb?

This is, without any doubt, amazing news.
I would love to be a beta-tester for this new platform; I'm not a developer, but I believe I can help out.

Hehe funny coincidence. I can see my mod 'Mars Wars' in the "New Mods"! :D

Will Desura help the users on installing the mods more easy?
Probably I haven't understood the whole thing about it yet. But sure does sound like a great opportunity to develop and sell indie games more easily.

It's just the right time for this and not too late.
I'd appreciate an invitation for a first look.

Sign me up for the beta!!!

One thing I'd really like to see is integration with messenger programs like msn. I usually have to sign out of these whenever I want to play games (which is all the time ^^) due to my ping going haywire. I'm pretty much off the radar when it comes to msn, skype, facebook, and everything else my friends tend to post on because of my gaming habit ^^

Anyway, that's just a suggestion, I'm sure there's more than enough on the team's plate already ^^

Will you be putting up UT3 mods that have begun using the UDK in their UDK forms?(Right now I think this is limited to "The Ball" demo and "Prometheus") And, will a mod be download-able even if you do not own the game?(I don't mean "playable", but just download-able.) Also, I wanna be in the beta! :) I only have HL2 and all the episodes, but could provide as much feedback as possible!

Well, I have to be honest. I'm happy you released this app, but now about half of my mod management project is obsolete. I'm coding a basic engine that would allow a user to install any mod on the site, and have it auto-patched, in one-click. It would understand mod pages and whether a file is an update, a full copy or something else and simplify the whole mod installation process. Since your official application will have somewhat of a closed catalogue, I guess I can still work on my own. And I guess an official app that uses an API, and thus would not need to decode HTML pages will function better. But I'm still a tad annoyed. :-|

But still, I'd like an invitation, if I may.

This looks like a real step forward.
I hope nobody sees this as a shameless steam clone, for it's something more. This is something made by and for the community, there isn't a big game studio working on it, just a group, ModDB, which is essentially a community group, building something to make a new name for Indie Developement. I would love to try to get in on this beta, this looks like a tremendous leap forward into the future of gaming, which I believe, will be a very kind place to indie developers.

This is quite an exciting development. I agree with all the Steam related comments (especially the DRM ones)...but Steam has worked hard to make this sort of digital distribution idea work. Maybe it doesn't work that well, but it does work.

Looks like you folks my change the paradigm with this though.
