Report article RSS Feed Introducing Desura

After 2 years of stealth development, the team behind ModDB are proud to introduce Desura, our digital distribution service for games and mods.

Posted by INtense! on Dec 16th, 2009

In case you have been wondering why updates from ModDB staff have been a little slow lately, it is because the team has been busy working on a secret project codenamed Desura. While Desura is far from complete and far from perfect, it is time to stop working in silence and to start inviting select teams and members to the private beta we are launching today.

Desura (like Steam, D2D, Impulse, GamersGate etc) is a digital distribution service for PC gamers. Unlike these platforms however which are just shops with little to no interaction between the community and the content available, we aim to bring the power and openess of ModDB to digital distribution. We hope to achieve this in three ways:

Developer driven

We don't make games ourselves, so we are entirely focused on helping game developers and publishers show off their wares. All tools and functionality provided by Desura to game developers, are provided to empower them to create a better game, and share its features in all their glory with the Desura community. Developers control the flow of news, images, videos and content through their profiles - we don't put up walls and barriers.

Developer functionality

Community run

Every member of the Desura community can post comments, submit reviews and upload screenshots. We are not some mysterious editor in an ivory tower controlling content - it's anybody who can put pen to paper. Our screenshots aren't limited to some airbrushed press releases - they're taken by the gamers who want to make themselves heard.

User made content

There are plenty of great free mods and user made addons out there for games, which few know about and even fewer can install. Being able to customize your games is at the heart of everything Desura does, and we aim to make user made content as accessible as possible. From simple maps through to entire conversions and even whole new games, we hope to put what you want to play at your fingertips.

Mods & DLC

If you would like an invitation to the private beta, please post a comment here. Mod and indie game teams, if you would like to release or sell your game using Desura please contact us to discuss. We hope this is the first step to creating a platform which gives all developers on ModDB the opportunity to release their content to millions of gamers. We have worked damn hard and though a ton of work remains to be done, we hope you are as excited as us by this news. As always, please post your questions and I will endeavor to answer them, as I am sure you have many.

No mac support atm, just a challenge getting it running on 3 different windows versions, but its on the cards.

In that case I won't be able to test the beta, since I only have a Mac atm. What if you not only support Mac in the future, but also dedicate a part of your service to Mac-games? Again something that’s never been done, and a way to differentiate from the other platforms. You would get the attention of the whole Mac community.

Its a full application as it needs access to the hdd and other things which a web app cant do. Would love to support mac as i have a mac book pro (fantastic laptop) except we dont have the time or resources atm to do it.

If only Steam were more receptive to including quality mods on its service, Desura would not be needed. I am definitely interested in a distribution platform for mods.

i think for making the download of mods easyer and making a community . it definitly will make a chance. if it is to sell games. you will never pass steam (70% of all sells are made at steam).

MatthewD Dec 16 2009, 2:05pm replied:

It could over time. A lot of AAA devs don't really like steam as their competitor has access to all of their sales info. With the right deals, mods, and leniency for Steam users it could surpass steam.

it might, but will be insane hard, i think desura should stay on mods and community there he will have a verry high chance of making it. the games a lot of luck requested, and 70% is not few btw especially because a lot of ppl already started with steam like me. seems to get somewhere and idd like to have an invitation for the beta

DuckSauce Dec 16 2009, 2:22pm says:

Sounds good, but if it's a Store like Steam, wouldn't that mean that if I buy games of off Desura, I wouldn't have it on Steam and I'd need to run both to be able to keep in touch with my friends list right?

That could also mean the Steam ingame overlay can't be used and I'd have to Alt-Tab out to talk to friends, rather inconvenient.

Have you thought about these things?
Having tried Battlefield Heroes once I know steam can have it's overlay work at a lot of situations, so if you worked together with Steam would that mean you could get the Overlay to work while running games through Desura? If so awesome :)

Great to see you supporting development like usual!

I'm looking forward to desura, it seems extremely promising. It will help to be able to only see the big/popular mods on the site, instead of 'fishing' round for the mod we want.

If it would have a Linux client I'd gladly offer to test it. As for the windows client there are for sure enough people around already which are of better help testing it. If it is a good idea or not I don't know yet. As somebody mentioned "yet another?" but on the other hand removing the editor (s)election of content is a nice thing. Time will tell how this fares.

Will this be linked in to ModDB in any way? It would make sense to move over commercial indie games to Desura, and for mods it would be a pain to have to update both the ModDB profile and the Desura profile,

INtense! Dec 16 2009, 3:22pm replied:

It is all linked, however all content on Desura is filtered, so only news, articles, mods, games etc published and chosen by the editors will be displayed. The site is a little blank at the moment because of this.

Great news, and I have been looking forward to something like this.
I would definitly put Nosferatu on there at some point, but a linux version is a must have requirement, mac would be nice too (I don't use or like mac, however I hate alienating users because of their OS).

I am sure (or at least I hope) a Linux and Mac Version will follow up at some point :)

Some people asked about achievements/trophies - is this planned further down the road ?

This looks amazing and I gotta hand it to you guys, it looks like you guys really know what you're doing!
Question though, excuse me if it has been answered already, how would Desura interact with mod-able games on other digitally distributed programs? Will they be able to interact somehow?

Here's a scenario. I want to play Nazi Dino Mod on Half Life, so I would run Desura, and would the mod run and install automatically? Would it detect the game already?
Would Desura have something related to steam as alt-tab ingame chatting?

I'm excited for this, and I hope it works out really great! Also, please do send a invite over here!!

INtense! Dec 17 2009, 3:25pm replied:

Desura will work with games you already own, so you are not necessarily locked in.

Also in your example desura will launch steam to play dino d-day, since that is how Steam works. So steam's text interface would be available.

We plan on making API's available which make functionality like this possible.
