Report article RSS Feed How should we release?

Protection, release schedules, how to release, and not getting sued by id Software.

Posted by gullah_jack on Nov 8th, 2009

Welcome back to another one of Quake II: Source's exciting updates! Now that we're back on track, I'm trying to update frequently. The big thing we're focusing on now is how we should release this mod without getting sued. It uses content from Quake 2, so we had to devise a way to make it so we can release it. There will be a protection system, where you have to own Quake 2 to continue installing the content. We don't know exactly how to release this. Make you wait a long time and release it at once, or release little packs like "Quake II: Source Model Pack" and addons for each thing like "Quake II: Source Map Pack 2" Either way, each installer would have the system packaged in to make sure you have the content. Hopefully, that way we can avoid any conflicts with id software. I'd like some input on you guys on how we should release the mod. We're also looking for coders, modelers, and mappers who can assist us with this huge project. By the way, Sehnsucht uploaded a video you might want to check out.

Thanks,
Robomanz0r

i say just release it all at once. and i do believe quake 2 is around 5$ so i really doubt ids gunna give a damn. but it is always nice to be safe. i say include something of your own to make the mod unique so that way it doesnt have a conflict, just the name :D

id's shut down projects like this before just for having one little bit of content in it. So we're playing it safe.

Why not just recreate the content as you like instead of lifting things from ID?

On the same token, I don't see the point in remaking Dino Crisis 2. Is it that it seems like a waste of precious time and unnecessarily exerted effort OR is it that it's just not your bag? If it's the latter, please just move on. :)

I wish id would port Quake II to id Tech 4 or 5! I'd pay again and forget all about the Source engine!

remaking dino crisis 2 not just cause of remake, but the point of making ANY source engine mod... u sure see the reason of remaking quake 2 cause its the great game but i dont understand why porting anything, you can only get into trouble, and ported stuff basicly looks the same, just with better rendering...

If you take a look at this discussion, you'll see that it's tempting to bring it to id Tech 4: snipurl.com/t5p7y
