Post news Report RSS GraviNULL Closed Alpha: Zero Gravity Combat

The zero gravity combat as it is now explained and demonstrated!

Posted by on

Hey watchers and everyone else who came to check out this mod, for those of you who came to check out GraviNULL for the first time and missed the first newspost, a quick summary:
GraviNULL is a first person multiplayer mod hl2 source mod. What distinguishes GraviNULL is that:

  1. There's no gravity!
  2. The only way to move is to use the new grapple beam function installed in the Gravity Gun to fling yourself around by grappling the many mines floating about.
  3. You don't get anything else but the gravity gun! You have to punt the mines to charge them and cause damage.

See the previous newspost for more information.

So what's new since the previous time I posted, now the gravity gun can enable it's normal secondary function when within appropriate reach of the mines and you're actually aiming at them. This automatically takes over the grapple beam function.

So for example, you can start up the grapple beam, keep holding it while heading straight for it, then when you're within reach the grapple beam is deactivated and the mine gets pulled in and grabbed.
Next you can punt it accurately enough to actually hit people, worth noting that while grabbing mines you obviously can't use the grapple beam, meaning that in an open area you'll be floating in a set direction, leaving you vulnerable for enemy predicting your movement and shooting a mine your way.

Alternatively, you could not aim at the mine while grappling, at which point the grapple beam will stay active until you release it or point your view towards the mine. This can help to alter your direction a bit before grabbing the mine making you a harder target than someone who just grabs the mine from a straight rush.

This means most of the gameplay is done now, what remains is balancing and tweaking.
Several mappers are hard at work to make fun maps to play, so you can expect an open alpha release soon with hopefully 2 or more maps at the least!

In the meantime, have a lookie at this early combat demonstration:

Nice idea. What type of maps do you have planed for this, open arena style like that one or ones that hae a few corners and bends?

Good job.

That's mostly up to the mappers, lots of open space is a must in any map though. The updated version of the map shown in the video has a big cylinder in the middle and 2 "blocks" on the sides of the map that break up your glides against the walls.

I can't quite believe how much fun that looks like. I hear "lowgrav" and immediately the shutters start to come down, but you've completely smashed through them. :)

Maybe add special mines like explosive, stun, vacuum, etc. mines to make it easier to hit people? It looks hard as **** to hit anyone right now. Looks fun though, can't wait for it!

It's not hard as **** to anyone, just ask Bekey, he has over 100 ping sometimes and still getting alot of kills. Granted there's room for improvement, but don't worry there will be in time!

Different mines for combat aren't really planned, special "modes" for the gravity gun are planned but it would take too long to do that in the first release, you can think of the modes as a way to alter the way existing mines are fired(think mines that fire the mines at faster speed and the damage increases the further it has travelled creating "snipe" mines, or a mode that allows the gravity gun to implement a limited homing system into the mines).

Some different mines for potential future game modes would be quite likely, especially for the race mode I'm planning somewhere after the first release.

For some reason, this "zero-grav" gameplay mechanic reminds me strongly of something associated with the Portal universe. I really think a beautiful Portal-themed "zero gravity arena" would be well-received by anyone who plays this game.

In addition, I wholeheartedly suggest replacing certain roller-mines with the following: Combine balls, exploding helicopter mines, and of course, Weighted Companion Cubes.

Also, think about exploring a game called "Dead Space" for inspiration on zero-gravity level design.

Well my first thoughts for a map would have also been a portal themed map, a white-ish test room with observation, however the mappers that joined the team have their own crazy ideas, including an arena inside the engines of a spaceship if I recall correctly.

As for replacing the roller-mines, I love their shock effect too much right now to do that, more "mines" may be added in the future though that could be like that. Weighted companion cubes would be a no go though since that would require mounting portal content for legal usage of just one model.

this mod has some potencial in it. you guys could really make this defrag style racing part. 2. make the map with a sumo stlye border, so the objective to kick his *** from the map. or simply integrate a super gravgun and make the floating dead bodys throwable. nothing like a godd revenge with your own body.
