Post news Report RSS Freebooter adds new island models and assets!

We've been trying to come up with a better way to do islands in Freebooters art style for a long time and now we are finally ready to show some of it off!

Posted by on

First of all, our newest island!

New island

As you can see, this island looks a lot different than the ones seen in our older screenshots and videos, and there's a good reason for that. We were never really happy with our older islands, so we decided to throw them out and start over - the island you see here has been made with brand new custom made tools and is the first of many we will include in Freebooter.
Beyond making the islands faster and easier to make, these new tools allow us to improve the detail we can put into the islands. For example, the underwater sand and cliffs seen in the above screenshot would have taken too long to make without our new tools.
We are very excited about the possibilities for islands this new way of making islands open up for us and we hope to be able to show more islands to illustrate these relatively soon.

We have also added new assets for islands recently - flags and banners. Since they display the icon and colours of their factions, flags and banners serve to inform the player of an islands allegiance.

These are still pretty rough and they will probably be tweaked before release.

That's all we have for today - Thanks for reading! As always if you want to keep up with our work on Freebooter, feel free to track the game here on indieDB.

Thanks! The wind effect is made with simplex noise - same method we use for the sea actually.

Looks really nice.
What bothers me are the clouds, I don't know, they look a bit unnatural, and all of the same size.
Whatever, I can't wait to try this out!

Thanks for the feedback.

The clouds are definitely lacking variation, but then again, we are only using three different cloud meshes at the moment. We added them to get an idea of how meshes would fare as clouds compared to the particles that we were initially using.
We will be adding more variation to the cloud shapes and sizes soon.

Hey! Is awesome, just a thing, make the island a little big, because the boat is like 1/12 part of it, and that's a lot :P

There are some concerns with islands that are much larger than the ones we have shown thus far, both in terms of making enough of them fast enough to get variety enough and in terms of making sure NPCs can navigate around them. We will probably take a look at islands again at a later point but for now we are focused on developing other areas of the game. Thanks for the kind words!
