Post news Report RSS Firearms: Source Weapons Showcase: OTs-33 "Pernach"

The team showcases the Russian OTs-33 "Pernach" select-fire machine pistol and describes its place in the overall weapons lineup. TheUltra4sshole also begins a new 2D art initiative for the community, and the winner from last week's "Name that gun" contest is announced.

As some of you are no doubt aware from the topic title, the OTs-33 is the mystery pistol from our Name that Gun Contest. Congratulations to forum member Grunt from The FAS Report for being the first one to get it right. I should point out that the FAS Report is a great source of news and information on the mod. They cover more than we do in our own updates, scouring the forums and IRC channels for any tidbits of information. We on the team highly suggest giving it a read.

There will be more contests like this in the future. As a hint of things to come, there's another very unique firearm we may be showcasing in one of the next updates. It's something that's not in any other video game series on the planet (that we know of anyway), and only a few people in our community might recognize it. Stay tuned for additional "intelligence reports" from the front lines. We'll be sure to provide some photographs and written information, and leave the guesswork up to you. Contest winners will be announced on the front page of the site in the following news update.

But, on to the OTs-33. For those of you who haven't heard of it before, I'll give you a quick rundown: The OTs-33 "Pernach" is a Russian machine pistol designed to replace the older APS pistols. It has a double-action trigger, safety/selector lever for changing between safe, semi and auto, and an integral accessory rail underneath the barrel. It's a bit more modern than our other handguns, having been designed in 1995. Our very own Naota did the model and skin, and thisismyname09 animated it. As you can see in the renders and screenshots, its a beautiful weapon. In-game, we've implemented it as a select-fire (semi/full) handgun with an 18+1 capacity. It can be made to fit into virtually any configuration at its current price of 4 credits (note: subject to change). Damage-wise, it's about on par with the Beretta 92FS, although a little weaker as it fires the 9x18mm Makarov round (vs 9x19mm Luger).

Given the properties of the weapon, it fills a nice little niche in our pistol lineup. It's something of a mix between an M11 and the 92FS, but with a smaller mag and better accuracy on semi-auto than the submachinegun category. It also gives us a Russian handgun, something we've been wanting to add for quite a while. It's also got some balancing needs, as obvious by the select-fire capability, but our testing crew is helping us out a good deal on that.

In other news, community rep TheUltra4sshole has started a new community-based 2D art initiative. I think it's best if I quote from the source on this one:

"Anyway, a great idea came across the FA:S team's board recently, and we all agree that it'd be a lot of fun to see what comes of it. We want you, the FA:S community, to make us some 2-D art for us to use in FA:S RC1. 2-D art being anything that you can photoshop, photograph, or even make in MS Paint. Think of this as our signature contests from the Art sub-forum, but without the contest part.

Now, before you say to yourself, "Bah, I have no artistic talent, nothing I create is going to catch the FA:S Team's attention", keep in mind: the FA:S Team is easily amused, and if I can make something like a scene from Durandal in MS Paint (as seen in this thread), then anyone can take part in this.

We'd love to get some potential sprays to include as the FA:S defaults, but don't let yourself get all caught up thinking inside the box...our mappers are always looking for posters, vending machine skin ideas, and stuff of that nature. How cool would it be to play in TC_Asylum and see something you made hanging on one of the walls?"

In other words, good entries are likely to wind up somewhere in the game - inside our maps, maybe on our menus or UI, maybe even on a weapon or a prop. We don't care how crappy you think it is - we're still interested in seeing it. Please see the FAS needs YOU! thread for details.

While I'm here, let me point out that we're not accepting any more testers. I get asked a lot, and I hate turning people away, but we're not at the point yet where we can add more people. Don't worry - the game is coming along great and we've made huge progress in the last few months. We're just not ready to show it off to more people. I expect we'll be able to open up new rounds of testing very soon, though.

That's it for today. I'll end with the usual help wanted line: Currently, what we need the most are animators and skinners. However, we'll also take sound artists, mappers, and modelers of any kind. If you feel you have the talent and dedication to be a part of the team, don't hesitate to drop us a line. My e-mail is hitman@firearms-source.com.

I figured you respectable fellows might want some bonus content in addition to the renders already provided. Just in case you feel the need to whet your appetite for further OЦ-33, I whipped these up moments after the official media release. Oh, and warm regards to the one who can name the symbol adorned on the handle.

Let's just say this:

Original Half-Life had 32 weapon/item slots.

Source has expanded those horizons. ;)
