New maps, new scenes, more graphical goodness, and a brand new musical score: Alpha 5 has seen a lot progress. We've done quite a lot of fixing and adding new content, and we’re saying "we" because Estranged is now being developed by 3 people.

I have decided to hold back with the full Greenlight release, instead putting it up when it's more complete. With more people working on the game now, development should progress much faster. Watch this space!

Estranged Alpha #5

Please note, you will need the Source SDK Base 2007 to play Estranged. Install here.

Update: There's an Ironsights option in the keyboard settings that I forgot to remove - please don't use it, it's very broken ;)

Played a bit, the endless respawn on the zombies right after the tree house breaks the atmosphere as well as the lots of ammo you find there.
Also the ironsight animation didn't work, and after every time the game loads the next level my gun disappears for a random time.

Thanks for the feedback. There're about 10 zombies in total, but I'll consider reducing that number if other people find this too.

The iron sights code needs removing as it's not fully working, I forgot about it being in the menu. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. What did you think to the rest of the game?

I did only a quick look at it.
Maybe you could adapt the code from NmriH, with the reloading to show the ammo count, iron sights etc. That would be great.
And yeah maybe two zombies as a start as well as a single pistol ammo box, that should be enough for the player to kill both Z's and still have a mag or so left.

Could you point me at that code so I can have a look? An ammo display is in the pipeline!

You dont always see your ammo count, but if you hold the reload key the player checks the ammo in his gun and his ammo avaible.
I'm finished with the rest of the alpha btw. The Cliffbunker could use some more deatils in terms of mapping. It just lokks like a bunch of square rooms with the same texture and no props here and there.
Also you should see to get some replacements for the standard HL²Models.

The 10 zombies seems a bit.. arbitrary. I think it's because they're obviously spawning right after each-other, it feels a bit too game-y.

I could not get past the bridge that kept breaking, so I had to noclip. Everything else was amazing though, it always surprises me how polished your stuff is, the type of quality I wish I was able to do in my mod, mostly the cool ui features and shaders and custom settings menu. Hope to see this done someday. I think the next installment should focus on adding a lot more gameplay than cool features though so it doesn't get too bloated.

Always surprised at the original gameplay too though, the simple throwing a rock to get the crowbar, very cool.

Kept breaking before I went across, I tried multiple times going at different speeds, just jumping across. The bridge doesn't look very good either imo.

We'll see if we can look into it a bit more. We already tweaked the bridge quite a lot before the Alpha 5 release and most people seem to make it across just fine by running and jumping. :)

If anyone is interested I did record and upload a video on youtube(link below this)...But this mod...I find it pretty amazing...I love the voice acting involved,animations,new animation sounds,etc...It kind of moved a little fast though....Over all it looks really great and I can't wait til the full release

This is what i think, like the music, sounds, new shaders, effects, lighting and **** but level design it's too much blocky, i can't find proper scale and textures is too big i dont know + lack of details in some places. i want to see final version. good luck guys!

It seemed pretty cool the only thing that seemed weird to me is that the bullets when shot looked like they would hit in a different area from the cross hairs when shooting the zombies and the bridge was a bit buggy. Other than that it was good.

Yeah sure. After I jumped the gap with the missing pieces of wood it just kept me there and wouldn't let me move so I fell and died. Also not sure if I didn't press the jump button in time or what but the second time I tried running then jumping the gap but just fell in. So I just kept jumping and made it across.

I released the scientist and turned off the electric so he could walk up to me then I went through a door into a dark room and the word ESTRANGED comes up and thats it, is that the end of the game?

That's the end of the current alpha, it's not the end of the game however but you'll be able to check out more areas in Alpha 6.

I loved the mod and have shared it with my friends, but I do feel that the ending needs a bit more work as I thought the game had crashed. Perhaps 'Estranged.... to be continued' LOL

Keep up the good work though :-)

Are you guys gonna make the full version cuz i really like this mod when the i met the doctor there is black door when i get in it shows Estrangled and nothing else.

Summary

Pros
- Stunning Visuals
- Great Music
- Great Atmosphere
- Nice premise
- Interesting subtle storyline
- Did not notice any bugs
- Detailed environment

Cons
- Voice acting is good, but could be improved in some areas (specifically when the voice actor should be yelling/speaking loudly when he sees zombies)

As you can see, I couldn't really think of many cons. Overall a really great mod, can't wait to see further updates!

Can't wait for full version. Every aspect of this mod is great, but for me there is too many first aid kits. Zombies are very easy, they have regular speed and damage (like in other mods). I found it easy to find them.

Glad you enjoyed it! I'm working on a dynamic system for consumables right now, it'll be in the next version. Resupply only when needed etc.
