An overview of the most common enemy encountered in Paragon. Also, does anyone have a better name for it?

The standard combat mech was originally designed to replace human soldiers in high-risk combat situations. Typically serving on the front lines under a lone human commander, their sacrifice has saved countless human lives.

As they typically come under fire from multiple foes, often with stronger defenses and more powerful weaponry, they scan their surroundings for cover and positions that provide a tactical advantage. Advanced sensory equipment allows the mech to swiftly line up a burst of lethal plasma before quickly diving back behind cover.

However, the combat mech's weak defenses make it exceptionally vulnerable when caught out in the open. In addition, the mech is slow to adapt to unfamiliar environments. Skilled human fighters exploit these weaknesses by luring the mech into areas with little cover and tearing it to shreds with a barrage of plasma.

We're currently trying to figure out a better, more creative name for this enemy. Does anyone have any ideas?

No real ideas for the name, although it could be argued you don't need one. I'm guessing you don't call gun "hand held fire blasers" so calling something generic by a generic name is fine.

If you want to get specific, I'd do a gun/car style system. A car is a car, but that specific car might be a Ford Focus. A gun is a gun, or to be more specific, a sniper rifle, or to get even more specific, a H&K PSG1. (Sorry, I don't know guns)

That point aside, I'm not sure it is even a mech. The way you describe it makes it sound like a robot, and the screen shots make it look about the size of a human. From my limited understanding, mechs have a pilot, power armour is worn, but often times that distinction is blurred. The power loader in Aliens could be either of the 2.

As mentioned in the article, it's a robot designed to replace humans, hence the similarity. That's an interesting comparison between a robot, a mech and armour... to be honest I though "mech" and robot were interchangeable. :)

So, I suppose it could be a combat robot/mech with some sort of further, maybe- no, that's what they used in Mass Effect. What about- no that sounds stupid. Hmmmm...

If it's designed to replace humans, that'd make it an android wouldn't it?

Excellent observation! So I suppose it could perhaps be called the ______ Combat Android? That could make a neat acronym too. :)

Looks like I spoke too soon. As far as I can tell, Desura does not support web-based games. So, while the demos and perhaps a trial will be web based, I'm not sure if the final game will. Sorry. :(
