Edain Mod 4.4 Demo Released!

Greetings, companions of Edain!


Today, we have released Patch 4.4 for the demo of Edain 4.0. You can now download it directly through the Update function of the Edain Launcher.

If you don't have a previous Edain version installed, you can instead download a complete setup by clicking on the banner below. You will have to run the launcher and update the game until the launcher tells you that you have the latest version. This may take more than one update.

The Last Homely House

Edain 4.4 brings the new Rivendell faction into the game. The Elves of Rivendell are unrivalled loremasters, artisans and warriors. They aspire to perfection in all things and their units are the most powerful in the game, but also the least numerous. Among other things, they can learn two abilities instead of one and receive blades and arrows crafted in the style of old Eregion on top of their regular upgrades. However, it does require some time for Rivendell to unlock its full potential through research in the library. You will have to master all the Elven arts to form Rivendell into a formidable shield against the forces of darkness. You will be aided in this by the Rangers of the North, who can be recruited as a supporting faction through the Outpost, and the Elves of Lindon through settlements.


One Ring to rule them all

We have overhauled the Ring mechanic for Edain 4.4. Previously, Ring heroes could not pick the One Ring up themselves and you'd have to pick it up with another unit and bring it to them. Now, it works in the reverse: Ring heroes are the only ones who can pick up the Ring and will use it directly. This not only fixes bugs with the Ring delivery, it also allows the AI to use the Ring by picking it up with their hero. Furthermore, 4.4 introduces several new Ring heroes with very unique abilities: Elrond of Rivendell doesn't use the Ring himself, but summons the entire Fellowship of the Ring as one extremely powerful hero bataillon to carry it. For the Dwarves, the king of each of the three realms is now a unique Ring hero with different effects for each Dwarven faction.

Other New Features

  • Several heroes have been reworked with new mechanics and abilities, including Denethor, Malbeth, Thorin and Balin. Denethor is now a very unique hero who summons his personal guard to the field instead of fighting by himself. His abilities allow a more aggressive playstyle, but sometimes carry long-term risks.
  • All maps now have expanded descriptions that tell you whether it's a camp or fortress map. how many settlements and outposts it has and which wild creatures can be found there.
  • Cavalry has been reworked across the board. They have slightly less health to be more vulnerable to things like pikes and other cavalry, but their armor against swordsmen has been increased drastically so they are more effective against them. They also deal 20% more trample damage and many cavalry units have received new or updated abilities to give them a more clearly defined role that sets them apart from other cavalry and lets them do their job better. For example, Rohirrim now slow down less while in wedge formation so they can trample more enemies, while Warg Riders gain more damage by howling - but only for their melee attacks, which makes them particularly good against other cavalry where trample damage doesn't matter. Heroic units especially have received more powerful and unique abilities. Lastly, upgrades grant 25% less bonus value to cavalry and Elite cavalry now only has 50% more health and damage than regular cavalry (down from 75%). We felt the gap between regular cavalry, which was often weak, and upgraded elite like Gondor knights and ram riders was, which were often nigh-invincible, was too wide, and have therefore adjusted it. We may apply these changes to other unit types in the future as well, but felt that cavalry were the most urgent.
  • The special map "Defend the Shire" has been expanded with two more playable factions.
  • As always, there are many bugfixes, smaller adjustments and visual improvements across all factions for you to discover that would take too long to list here. Have fun exploring!

Balance Changes

  • Siege rams now require 40 command points and catapults 60, making them less easy to spam in large numbers. This is only the first part of a larger planned update to siege engines and defenses, which will grant siege engines more clearly defined roles and in turn also reduce the power of defensive towers to a more manageable level. However, we were not able to finish this in time for 4.4 after the cavalry rework.
  • Price of all heroes that cost exactly 1000 resources increased slightly so they can no longer be recruited at the very start of the game.
  • Hero abilities now gain increased damage per level the same way basic attacks do. This especially benefits wizard heroes like Gandalf.
  • Units and heroes now all grant roughly 20% of their cost as money when they're killed while under the effects of an enemy bounty leadership. Note that hero bounties still scale up with the hero's level, which we may also remove in the future.
  • Regular monsters like trolls now cost 500, while elite monsters like Ents and Werewolves cost 1000 and have slightly reduced health.
  • Health of single units like Beornings and Barrow-wights slightly reduced as well.
  • Beregond's Invulnerability spell now has a greatly reduced area of effect (the same as normal leadership effects)
  • Rohan Exile Camp: Cost increased to 800, buff only lasts for 45 seconds now and no longer grants bonus experience.
  • Peasant recruitment time and Draft cooldown decreased by 15%
  • The Rohan Royal Horse spell now correctly grants +30% health instead of a fixed 300 health for every unit and reduces trampling slowdown by 50% instead of 30%
  • Rohan's Haldir spell now summons one more group of archers and Haldir has improved abilities.
  • Rohan's woodmen spell now also summons one more group of archers and Ghân-buri-ghân has improved abilities.
  • Morgul Fortress and Dol Guldur Fortress: Cost decreased to 2500.
  • Battle Wagon: Melee damage decreased, damage of ranged upgrades increased, upgrade costs adjusted to their intended values.
  • Zaphragor's spells now always cost a fixed percentage of his maximum health and thus can no longer kill him.
  • The Barrow-wight Crypt is now levelled up through tribute carts and has only three levels, like Angmar's other structures. This also means that Barrow-wights are weaker overall because they no longer gain bonuses up to level 5 from the Crypt.
  • Rabies effect decreased to +60% damage, -40% armor
  • Spiked Collars now cost 600 to research, 300 to equip and take 20% longer to research
  • Wolf Den cost increased to 150
  • Dire Wolf movement speed decreased by 10%

The mod and the game are for Windows. Mac OS was never supported.

I personally liked Lindir in AUJ. But the problem is that he's completely fictional and there wouldn't be space for him in the faction: Erestor is already great in supporting aspects, and he's totally canonical regarding the lore sources.

And Erestor uses Lindirs soundset. As Lindir in the movie is just another name for Erestor, he is already included.

I didn't know about that aspect. Tolkien Gateway considers them as two different characters.

I would see Lindir in the movie similar to Iorlas instead of Imrahil (and Beregond). Lindir behaves exactly as Erestor would. Therefore it is nothing but a name for me.

I wish they had just named him Erestor in the movie, but that may have created confusion since it sounds similar to "Erebor."

i played yestrday.. but i get Instant Def. whit Gondor if i chouse Catile map/. + i get crushes whit no reason.. I unisnt. then instal all back.. Still crush some time in midle of game :3 I i just reapot this.. but game is still good :) Riwindel is great fiction :3

hello Edain team, are you going to be allowing a 4.4 download to be accessible on moddb, my launcher cannot connect to servers for some reason, (have uninstalled and installed many times) so a full download on moddb as well as a launcher update would be much appreciated.

I believe the path of the Edain was available when 4.3 was released. In your skirmish maps it should be named Mission: The Path of Edain.

Some of my thoughts about Edain 4.4:
Imladris is fun to play but they are very laggy. Whenever i play them, the fps usually drop below 25fps and in large battle, it's 15-20fps. I get stable 25-30fps with other factions. I have an i5 6k5 and a 1060 gtx, but i guess this game is still a challenge for my pc.
The new ring hero system is well done. Wherever gollum is killed, it become the hot spot on the battle field. I did have the ring stolen by AI Sauron. Guess what, he returned to his base and never came out again. The one ring is too precious for him so he decided to keep it inside his base. My army would be in real trouble if he did battle me. So the new ring system do get the AI hero pick up the ring but it just like to prevent player from getting the ring. I hope edain team can improve this in next patch.

I still have hope that there will be an Evil Men faction. Will there be one? Because the Haradrims and Rhûn Soldiers are really underused. The reinforcement spell is really crappy in my opinion. So is there any chance to see an Evil Men faction? :3

The Evil Men are a plausible choice for the next two new factions that can still be added to the game; but, if they are really to be implemented, that will happen not before the last planned faction is released (the Misty Mountains). The Edain Team has never given any precise statement on the matter though. Thus, everything is pure speculation ;)

I personally think that Rhûn and Harad are included very well in Mordor. If you think about it, the Evil Men were never as subdued to Sauron as the Orcs naturally were; they aided Mordor from their motherland, but they in fact didn't really belong to Mordor itself. Their actual implementation via the spellbook exactly shows that they are not servants of the Dark Lord always available, and that they arrive from far and mysterious lands of Middle-earth.

The spell to call reinforcements is actually very good and clever but... the reinforcements are kind of low I guess? Atleast there should be a new spell (I don't know which spell should be replaced by this) to increase the reinforcements like Gondor has?

It's quite wise that the reinforcements of both Rhûn and Harad are not so much decisive, otherwise you would continuously have to rely strictly on them as for your real units; this wouldn't be appropriate both for gameplay and lore/conceptual reasons (as I wrote above, they are not really 'regular' units from Mordor). Nevertheless, if used properly, these allies do make difference in the game and do have some chances to turn the tide of the battle. That said, I strongly believe that they don't need to be enhanced at all.

Mordor already controls two mighty subfactions: Dol Guldur and Minas Morgul. The faction can also dispose of the forces in surveillance of Cirith Ungol. Add this to the already variegated warfare of Mordor itself and to the allies you call via the spellbook. Wouldn't implementing other type of reinforcements be eventually redundant? ;)

Well, if Evil Men is not a part of Mordors army of orcs, why is Dale in the army of Erebor? Why is the Dunedain in the Imladris army? Why does Ered Luin have Lake-town? Hmm?

Gadriel nides more power :) in the End she is The one that cast Sauron in Abbys :3 .. boot when she gets the ring.. and Tourn in Storm quen.. she is still vik :( but in Movie she is powerfull and whit ring she nides more power.. :( but nothing :/ I Wold like to see Some Famus Fortres .. like BaraDur Ortanch,Minas Morgul but in full power.. Cose Maps and This Special places ar not in Edain ( but this is sugestions i Love the edain mod.

Galadriel is at a good spot at the moment. She has enough power for her role (a support hero) if she is given too much power she will become too strong. As for the Ring Hero forms they are also well balanced. Giving too much power against units to a support hero will make her overpowered. As for the famous fortresses you can already see the Orthanc in Edain's Isengard (cursed), Minas Morgul has also been recreated although Glorfindel23 has also made his own edition. We have yet to see a map of Barad Dur yet but one may soon appear.

i dont think Gadriel nide arsenal.. but.. She give to Sam 3 sead.. and the ar just Tree :/ maby bit imagination from book? Minas morgul and other like barad dur ar not realy you.. know.. likeArtistic :D i saw some models and they look prety cool and has allot that one Mighty fortres nides :) the shold be some maps for Def. and atack .. so Powerfull fortres dont look like owerpowerfull.. bay all .. Edain is dooing too good job :) Game is better for like 100% it is like BFME 3 or 4 :D

You can either get it from Modding Union on the official thread (https://modding-union.com/index.php?topic=32454.195), on the Edain Community Content Group (https://www.moddb.com/groups/edain-community-content/addons) or on the Wiki in the Fan Created section (http://edain.wikia.com/wiki/Fan_Created_Content#Glorfindel23).

About Galadriel, the seeds she gives to Sam are actually directly taken from the book, the movie replaced it with the rope when they decided to remove the Scouring of the Shire. Barad-Dur is a very complicated map to make, because of the shape it has and, unlike Isengard, the tower is both the castle and citadel few mappers attempt it. Most maps will end up flattening out the citadel.

Hello, I've encountered some bugs while playing.

I always play in Epic battle mode, and the CP start with 450, and suddenly goes back to 300 CP, it takes around 5 to 10 sec whenever the game starts.
So whenever I play, I have to struggle to make enough CP to sustain my army while the AI starts to attack me with atleast 10 hordes in the beggining of the game.

So, this bug only happens to human players not the AI.

I tried other modes and this happens in each mode, skirmish, massacre, etc ...

could you guys plz make a wild men fac with 2 sub facs(dunland and enedwaith)like with the dwarves where you choose a dwarven realm and a norhtmen fac with 2 sub facs to(beornings and woodmen btw woodmen would have wolves/hounds not cav and be cav killers) and where can i write suggestion ?
