Another preview of what to expect in the next version of A Clash of Kings.

Posted by on

Another day, another preview.

Continuing the last preview, I wanted to explain the new sellsword system a bit better, especially now that I've managed to make it a bit more nuanced than the one described in the last post.

Basically, there'll be three "different" kind of sellswords obtainable in A Clash of Kings.

Zimke items 1Zimke items 2

The first kind is the one described in the last preview, where the player can recruit "lances" consisting of 20 men from the major free cities - but only 12 from each city. After that, the sellswords available become shockingly inferior, basically just wandering bands of brigands, much like the Brave Companions from the books. It still allows for more than 2000 high quality troops to be recruited, but it will obviously be changed if it turns out to be too few. The player will still be able to recruit troops from Westeros which retains the native system, and also hire sellswords from the taverns.

The Free Cities, however, now also contains proper sellsword companies. As an example, the Bright Banners can be recruited from Lorath once. That particular sellsword company costs 75000 coins to hire, and consists of a 100 men. That's a lot of gold, and something with which you could buy a very decent suit of plate armor and a lot of enterprises, but hiring a sellsword company is a major advantage, as they don't take into account the players party size. Say you've got a maximum party size of 100 men - you've filled it with Stormlands Archers. But that's not nearly enough to take on Tywin Lannister and establish your own kingdom! But if you've amassed a great amount of wealth, you can skip across the Narrow Sea and hire some sellsword companies, and while your maximum party size might be 100, and already reached, it won't matter, and you can now start your war of conquest with your 100 Stormlands Archers, and 100 sellswords from the Bright Banners. This is the second kind of sellsword recruitment.

The third one is more of a novelty feature. Some towns and castles (with more to come in future versions) have been given an extra town option. If you visit White Harbor, you'll be able to scroll down and click the "Visit Fishfoot Yard" option, which will transport you to another menu where a short text will give you some info about Fishfoot Yard, White Harbor and also allow you to recruit the 10 White Harbor Knights currently standing around and looking for employment. This is a one time thing - you won't be able to recruit them again, but it should give certain locations a bit more flavor. I'll probably expand this feature in future versions, both in regards to recruitable troops and just as a way to make towns more interesting (perhaps you can buy a pound of cheap spice in Volantis, who knows). The upcoming world book should be a great source of inspiration in that regard.

If you've read this far, you've probably noticed the "donations" part of the post title.

The donation button has been available for a long time, and a lot of people have been more than generous in donating, without knowing what their money was going towards.

Well, the donation pool finally reached the size where I felt comfortable commisioning new items for A Clash of Kings. All donations go towards new items, models and textures for A Clash of Kings, and eventually A Clash of Kings II.

Docm30 of L'aigle fame (link: Forums.taleworlds.com ), and Zimke Zlovoljni from the Age of Change II team (link: Forums.taleworlds.com ) have both allowed me to pay them for their work and time and as a result, A Clash of Kings is looking much better.

That's all for now. I don't know when A Clash of Kings 1.4 will be ready, but it shouldn't be too long - I want it to be out before the world book gets released so I can incorporate lore from that much anticipated source into 1.5.

For the sellswords, when you have paid the 75000, is there a weekly cost ?

Probably not because they don't count as your army, but like your vassals

They cost wages, Cozur has confirmed it. Would be weird if mercenaries wouldn't accept wages.

What? Winds of Winter doesn't have a release date yet if that's what you mean. If you're talking about a French translation you might be able to find one online

Sounds really awesome!

Could we hire a company, but instead of it joining the player's army proper, they have a character leader, and follow you around as a second army, and can be sent off to do your bidding, like protect your villages?

will you maybe ,in a future version er ACOK II, include a sort of warden function?(like warden of the north,vale,dorne,reach,...)
then we can finally capture this huge as map and rule it without having every lord hating me, if we could name a man to rule a part of my faction in my name we would only have to keep him happy and the other rulers(in my name) happy and the huge map would be conquerable(is it a word?).

btw,if you dont include this it doesnt matter, the mod is INCREDIBLE without it! i just RPG myself a warden of the middle map in the name of the targaryans wich i grant all of westeros by conquer :)

1.4 will be amazig since i spend a lot of time in essos early on in the game. keep up the good work!!!
