Post news Report RSS Didn't think I'd Have To... Me & Black Mesa, and An Update

When I started the mod, I didn't think I've have to create a whole news article devoted to this, but I guess I have to.

Ever since this mod's page was put up, I've been getting tons of private messages telling me my efforts are pointless. The thing about the messages, though, is the fact that they all tell me I can't compare to Black Mesa, that they're already doing it, and all of that yada yada. I agree, I can't compare, but I'm not trying to. Black Mesa is more or less a re-imagined Black Mesa. How they believe it should have (or would have) been done if Valve had the Source engine. Due to this, some parts may not be quite as close to the original game as I try to make my mod.

While my mod may look something like this:

(In no way represents actual mod quality or content.)

Black Mesa will look more like this:

(Does not represent my ACTUAL opinion on Black Mesa.)

Exaggerated, yeah.

With that, I'm not trying to say my project will be any better than Black Mesa, or that they're not doing it right, or anything like that. All I'm saying is that while our goals may be mostly the same (more or less), our way of approaching it is different. They want to do a fancy, badass, professional remake, with many realistic changes, I want to do a simple, but decent remake with minimal changes. I'm choosing authenticity over badassery. Yeah, some areas will be pretty different. Just not Black Mesa detailed. I hope this has gotten my point across, because receiving messages on Steam, or emails, or whatever about the topic is getting quite old. For the last time, I'm not trying to compete. If I was, I should delete all the files and cry, now.

So this post isn't entirely a rant, I'll just say a tad bit here. Progress is going MUCH faster than it was a month or two ago. This is great because this being such a small project, I could be done VERY soon. Attentive ones may notice I've changed the mods release date to nothing at all, because at this point I'm completely stumped. There's no telling now with the odd fluctuations of progression. I've too converted to a "milestone" development style, and that's been helping. It also may be the cause of the burst of progress. As you can tell, I've got a HUGE portion of the mods orange-mapped. Bare bones HL1 layout which I'll be building off of, rearranging, and generally changing tentatively, but still, that also means a crucial portion has been completed.
Since I've gotten a few requests I don't think I'll be needing any help, although I do appreciate the offers. It's a combination of my total ability to do this project solo, my antisocial personality, and my inability to trust, or manage people I've no history with. I'm mapping, creating the textures, doing about 90% of the level design, the rest of which a family member has taken charge of. Aside from a few tidbits that I are outta my range here and there, I've got this on lock. See ya next update.

I agree your never be like Black mesa, but still need to show a level of detail and atmosphere beyond Half Life standards to which you haven't really got here. Don't get me wrong I think the potential is their, but with this mod.

I don't see its really necessary for your work to be compared with Black Mesa, especially not pointless. Modding is far from a competition, its all about making things the way you want them, even if someone may be doing something similar already. Sometimes its just fun, or for learning.
