Post news Report RSS Devlog #5 and Plot

Another development log video released, and a little bit of talk about the plot.

Hey. So, here's another development log video - this one deals with the sound and BGM currently implemented in Soldier Of. There are some issues, like the jump sound being too low, and the tile stepping sound not sounding different enough from the normal stepping sound, but it at least gives a little bit of an idea of how the game will look and sound.

The sound cracks in the video, but there's not really anything that I can do about that - OpenAL (the BGE's audio framework(?)) doesn't like my audio setup (not really the BGE's fault; problem for me with other cross-platform programs, too).

Also, someone asked about the plot of Soldier Of. I don't want to give away too many details, but this is a short synopsis.

You play as Simon Brower, as he returns home from a trip, only to find that your city, New Pitria, has been attacked and invaded. You must get to the center of the city, get to your home, and find your wife, Tracy. After finding her, you must escape the city.

When you first head toward the center of the city, you find that there's a variety of obstacles in the way. These obstacles can only be bypassed by using items that you gain through your journey through the city. For example, you can only bypass a sewer grating through using Jump Boots that you find elsewhere. Weak walls can only be destroyed by means of a grenade. Trees can only be burned down by a flamethrower.

This is the way the game will progress - through finding items, and using said items to advance further into the game. Backtracking will be present, as you will be able to (and need to) explore previously inaccessible areas through the new items you gain throughout your journey, though this won't be done to an extreme degree.

There's more to the game and plot, but I'm purposely hanging back on writing down the dialogue for the game, as the game's format isn't final (what happens, where it happens, the number of characters in the game, etc), so I'm just focusing on the overarching story and the room setup.

Evan tough i'm getting rather tired of all the massive flood of retro-looking indies, this one really captured my attention.

I don't know, reminds me of some classics i played.

Thank you for this little plot too, seems simple but fun.

Good luck, really looking forward to see this.

Thanks, I'll try to make it look and sound different. I also would like to try something more 3D and modern-looking... Maybe I'll get into that next...
