Post news Report content RSS feed Desura Linux - Beta launch

Desura Linux is finally available to a closed group of beta testers.

Posted by Platima on Sep 14th, 2011

After months of grueling work, we're proud to announce the launch of Desura Linux beta! The initial testing group is quite small but will grow as we eliminate bugs and are happy with the applications stability. To be fair we will be inviting people in order, so those who requested access to the beta 6 months ago (thanks for your patience!), you will be first in. Once our testers are happy, we will be opening the beta to everyone. Of course it is never too late to apply for the beta, to do so simply join the Desura group here.

Also please note that while you can browse and buy games on Linux, you wont be able to download and play them until you have access to the beta. So PLEASE bear that in mind!

Thanks again to everyone for all the positive (and negative) feedback so far - we welcome the challenge and know the real work is only just beginning. Special thanks to Tim Jung for testing and uploading Linux games like a machine, and to Marshall Greenblatt and the other CEF contributors for the great work. We've got plenty more games coming, some never before on Linux, so much to look forward to.

Finally this is a beta, so we appreciate your understanding that there will be bugs and issues to resolve and we will endevour to address them as soon as we can.

New Information:

  • 22nd Sept 2011: A new build is out with MANY fixes. If you couldn't get past login, or don't want to wait, just run "./desura -f" to force your client to update to it (without the quotes of course, and from the desura directory, not from desura/bin/)
  • 22nd Sept 2011: Starting the next round of invites as well

Known Issue Notices:

These are issues we are aware of and currently working to address (last updated 22nd Sept 2011):

  1. On some systems there will be a lot of console output about GDK_IS_WINDOW assertion
  2. Sometimes exiting the client will result in a crash

When we release an update, you'll be notified above

Bugs and Issues:

Please report any bugs or issues on the forums.
Most bugs and help information is now being posted here .

Guys, I have to say THANK YOU, for this awesome piece of software!

Running Desura here under openSUSE 11.4 x64, flawlessly, without any problems. Running KDE, Desura looks even fine from the design side (even the nice traybar icon).

Added all my Humble Bundles. Manually Download and start of Atom Zombie Smasher has given me always an mono runtime error ... now, installing with Desura, hit Play and it works absolutely nice!

Thanks for your Linux support. - I hope that it will be continued for a long time ;)

Many thanks for the Linux client. Works fine on Arch Linux 64 bit. Needs libjpeg6, lsb-release and libpng12 in order to run and log in. Have tried the demoes of Penumbra and Amnesia and they work fine. But playing trailers in client freezes the client completely.

We are limiting beta testers to the order in which they signed up for the beta. We are doing this to keep things manageable and to reduce the number of bugs before the community at large uses it.

I just got invited to the beta overnight. Thanks! I had a question. Am I able to relocate the install directory after I install things? I mean the entire directory where Desura and everything it manages resides.

I downloaded Desura into an incoming directory and ran it there not realizing that would become it's home. I've since downloaded several of the Humble Bundle games and one free one to test out the client.

I'm sure I could just redownload and everything would be fine. I would like to move it to something like ~/Desura to avoid wasting everyone's bandwidth. I wasn't sure if I should expect that to be safe.

A quick scan of the install directory for file with the name of the install directory only found the desktop.desura file so I guess I would have to modify that and re-register it with the system. I half wonder if I could just move the directory and rerun the Desura install to let it clean that up.

Lastly, is there some other forum I should use for things like this? I would think of this as more of a question than an actual bug.

Protektor Sep 23 2011 replied:

Yes you can relocate the Desura directory and every thing under it to anywhere in your home directory where it has write privileges. You will need to run desura from the directory one time so it can remake your shortcuts to the new location.

hey i noticed that desura that the desura panel icon needs to be right clicked to bring up the menu but everything else just does a left click so it feels weird using the desura panel icon (ubuntu 11.04) not really a bug i guess tho, just kinda like a confusing thingy

Eddward Sep 23 2011 replied:

That could be a difficult one. I only tried right click. That's what I was used to in the notification area. I know Ubuntu came up with a new convention using left click only or something. I don't know if it's caught on.

I've a problem with A.Typical RPG.

Firstly, while the regular version is Windows and Linux, the "A.Typical RPG Extra Cheese With Lightning Bolts Edition" is Windows only.

The second problem is more serious; I bought the "Extra Cheese" edition a few months ago and just now I redeemed the Desura code for it.

A. Typical RPG now appears in the Play Menu of the Desura client, but when I double click on it I get a dialog box that says "A. Typical RPG is not installed. Please select the release you would like to play" and I get a dropdown with the options of "Full 1,99€ EUR" and "Find Install on this computer" neither of which will let me play the game.

When I click on the button "More Information", I get a list showing the regular version of A. Typical RPG, the demo version and the Extra Cheese version. The only one with a "Play Now" option is the Extra Cheese version, and clicking on that I get a dialogue with:

"There was an error during the gathering information process and it has been stopped.
Branch is invalid or user doesnt[sic] have permissions to install branch. [42.0]"

I JUST HAD A GENIUS IDEA! Unity Quicklist For Desura! From what I know about quicklists thier easy to make (atleast OMG! Ubuntu makes it sound that way) you could have the quicklist also do all the stuff the panel launcher does!!!!!!!!!! I think its an epic idea cause it would make Desura feel like another part of Ubuntu which would be 1337ness! just an idea tho and I'm sorry if I just opened this thread to Unity h4t3rs out there.... BTW I personally LOVE unity!

Brilliant stuff!

I can confirm that it installs, downloads games and plays them using Linux Mint 10. Was impressed when amnesia played fine, though the mouse was a bit jittery, I put that down to my gfx card or beta-ness.

The few issues I've encountered are:

Playing videos causes the client to crash.
Sometimes on exiting the client, a popup appears saying it didn't close down correctly and then it presents 3 options, restart desura, update to fix or cancel.

Other than that its looking great. Just a shame there is no Trine demo. :P

I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 32bit and here is some feedback on the Linux client:

Atom zombie smasher, Braid, Cogs, Hammerfight, Lugaru, Osmos, Red eclipse, Samorost 2, Steel Storm, VVVVVV, Warsow, World of Goo and Xonotic (minor audio issues) all download and play great.

And yet it moves, Penumbra: Overture and Crayon Physics at first download demos. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling them and after some effort all install the full games.

Machinarium and Revenge of the Titans refuse to launch and crash the client every time.

The preview videos also crash the client.

The download speeds are really great!

An autosign option at startup would be useful and I hope to see more Linux native games in the future (ex. Spiral Knights, 0 A.D. etc)

Thank you for an awesome service that even in beta is great! Keep up the great work

Not sure if you guys have tested Redeclipse, but there seems to be a problem with it and zero ballistics, i think the ZB one has been mentioned (crashs on startup, no error logs, just doesnt go). The Redeclipse one is a little more serious.. It actually is being linked to a file called which outside of a few distros (who actually symlink to an older version) doesnt actually exist. The latest libtiff is 3.9.4.

It's posted a lot around the google-web :p

May want to look into it just incase anyone doesn't check and blames the desura client for it.

naryl Sep 27 2011 replied:

Gentoo has and symlinking .4 to .5 somehow worked.

I actually can't find any mention of any libtiff5 but the package for =media-libs/tiff-4.0.0 installs the library called which works for Weird.

3.9.4 is the latest stable API version but some games already use 4.0.

I can only suggest game devs to put all required libraries in the package for Desura like proprietary games do.

Korvinus Sep 27 2011 replied:

Yep the 4.0.0 alpha which is in gentoo and can be downloaded actually gives, the last stable was 3.9.4 and they seem to have messed up the numbering scheme for it. sym links work great but it's not really a "good" solution.

I am planning to buy way more games available for Linux in the future. Not only to play, but also to alphafund some good games projects, and support Desura. I've been waiting for a steam-like linux platforms for ages, Thanks Desura! To all the Linux users out there, support devs and desura allowing us to play games on Linux, buy some stuff!!

I have a bug with both Linux and Windows versions. It seems to forget my favourites on restart.

Also some documentation on dependencis for package writers is welcome. Arch didn't get it right. :] My system was also missing gconf (which is a part of Gnome but not GTK) and libasound (which is not available on systems with OSS).

Other than that works perfectly though I haven't tested commercial games yet. Only Xonotic and UFO: AI.

You may be creating history with this piece of software. ;)

naryl Sep 27 2011 says:

There is a big problem. Linux software developers generally just list all dependencies and rely on distributions' package maintainers to write/create distribution-specific packages. Desura alone can't hope to support all package managers to install all dependencies automatically on any distro. The only solution I see is for game developers to include all required libraries in the desura package which is already the case with proprietary games but not opensource ones. I hope somebody can find a better solution.

/me just had to hunt UFO:AI's dependencies one by one.

Just tried the installer with my Sabayon 64-bit system and it gives me an instant 'Segmentation fault'. No other errors. So I did not even get it installed.

I *could* distro-hop just to try it out, but thought I'd ask first if there's anyone with any suggestions?

EDIT: Found a suggestion on the Gentoo forum
"Recompiling cairo with -qt4 and -xcb fixes the seg faults."

Here's a fix to make desura link to standard libraries

sed -i 's,,\x00\x00\x00,g;
s,,\x00\x00\x00,g;' lib/

Not sure why Desura chose to link against non standard libraries.

Same issue as another user with desura downloading 32bit games on a 64bit system, then prompting to re-download the 64bit version.

Glad you're giving us the chance to help you iron out the small bugs before you go public.

I see almost no impact from it being either closed or open source so the developers will probably just choose the tried and true way for commercial software.

Thx for the invite. I don't know, if it's the right place to post a bug report, but anyhow ;-)
Desura works fine until I press the play button on a video preview on any possible game. I can't press any button inside the desura program afterwards. The video isn't displayed/started. Only way to get out of this mode is to kill desura.
Only hint so far: (desura:5259): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead

Is it possible to set desura into a debug mode to get a crash/error report?

Been using the client for a few days. Often when I exit I get the following error:

An error has occured that is preventing Desura from running correctly. Restarting Desura should allow you to continue, otherwise you can clean your Desura install by forcing an update. Apart from that the client works fine.

The following games work fine on my system:

Blocks That Matter
Crayon Physics Deluxe
Steelstorm: Burning Retribution

The following games that I have tested have problems:

Machinarium (already known problem, crashes client when trying to launch)
Atom Zombie Smasher (error after shutting down the game and a logfile is produced)

Can I submit the logfiles somewhere to help fix these problems?

System: Ubuntu 11.04 64bit
