Post news Report article RSS Feed Desura Linux - Beta launch

Desura Linux is finally available to a closed group of beta testers.

Posted by Platima on Sep 14th, 2011

After months of grueling work, we're proud to announce the launch of Desura Linux beta! The initial testing group is quite small but will grow as we eliminate bugs and are happy with the applications stability. To be fair we will be inviting people in order, so those who requested access to the beta 6 months ago (thanks for your patience!), you will be first in. Once our testers are happy, we will be opening the beta to everyone. Of course it is never too late to apply for the beta, to do so simply join the Desura group here.

Also please note that while you can browse and buy games on Linux, you wont be able to download and play them until you have access to the beta. So PLEASE bear that in mind!

Thanks again to everyone for all the positive (and negative) feedback so far - we welcome the challenge and know the real work is only just beginning. Special thanks to Tim Jung for testing and uploading Linux games like a machine, and to Marshall Greenblatt and the other CEF contributors for the great work. We've got plenty more games coming, some never before on Linux, so much to look forward to.

Finally this is a beta, so we appreciate your understanding that there will be bugs and issues to resolve and we will endevour to address them as soon as we can.

New Information:

  • 22nd Sept 2011: A new build is out with MANY fixes. If you couldn't get past login, or don't want to wait, just run "./desura -f" to force your client to update to it (without the quotes of course, and from the desura directory, not from desura/bin/)
  • 22nd Sept 2011: Starting the next round of invites as well

Known Issue Notices:

These are issues we are aware of and currently working to address (last updated 22nd Sept 2011):

  1. On some systems there will be a lot of console output about GDK_IS_WINDOW assertion
  2. Sometimes exiting the client will result in a crash

When we release an update, you'll be notified above

Bugs and Issues:

Please report any bugs or issues on the forums.
Most bugs and help information is now being posted here .

What distribution are you running and does Red Eclipse give you any error messages? The same thing of King Arthur's Gold what error messages are you getting?

Ok found the problem with King Arthur's Gold. There is a whole new version and revision up. Download that and it should fix your problem.

Some possible bugs:

On a 64-bit Ubuntu 11.10 machine, I've been able to get the client to lock up fairly regularly by selecting text. If I click and drag the mouse over some text, it will occasionally become unresponsive. This happens about 10% of the time I do it. The Desura menu icon and systray icon still function and allow you to quit the program though.

Is this a bug? Everytime I cancel anything, the client cashes and I have to restart it..
Also when I install puzzle moppet, it appears as not ready when I restart the client.
Another problem, I've got MFC problems with machinarium and penumbra:overture.

Protektor Sep 23 2011, 2:31am replied:

That is a known bug and is being addressed. I believe both those issues should be ok now.

When I created my profile I used a very long password that the web page accepted. When I tried to log into the client, it did not accept the password. After shortening the password a great deal via the web interface the client accepted the password and then failed since I am not a part of the beta. I expected the second error. I would like it if the client allowed the larger passwords like the web does.

KameZero Sep 21 2011, 9:28am replied:

Hmm, how long of a password are we talking? Mine is 20+ characters

Eddward Sep 21 2011, 8:20pm replied:

51 characters initially. Then 40. 18 worked. But I noticed a few more oddities with the log in UI involving field selection via, tabbing between fields & buttons and cut-n-paste. My password issue last night could be related to that.

I was also able to delete all of the characters in the password field and instead of showing "Password" grayed out it show my password in visible text (instead of black dots). If I began to enter the password again it would remove the password and start displaying black dots for each letter typed as one would expect.

I don't really have a good description of the behavior I saw today yet. If I can come up with clear recreate process I'll post it.

Since i can't log in the Desura client at the moment i'm trying lots of different stuff with the installer.
With a very low download speed, i found a memory leak. After 2 hours of downloading, the installer was taking 3.6go of ram and was using swap. Except that all is fine. If only i could log-in and try the full client.

If you're getting "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
what(): basic_string::substr" in archlinux
Try installing lsb-release from pacman. It worked for me.
Now i only have to wait for access to the beta...

I did not get a mail with "congrats you are in the beta testing" - but I went to the download page and got the Linux 64-client and then I logged in to find out that I was already in the beta testing :)

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 and it is not working that great on 11.10 yet, but I guess it will come in due time :P

for example these games does not work:

Urban Terror (Can't be installed)

Machinarium (Can be installed but it crashes the client when I try to open it)

Crayon Physics Deluxe Demo/ and the full version (./launcher: error while loading shared libraries: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

World of Goo 64-bit

and these games does work:

Atom Zombie Smasher
World of Goo 32-bit
World of Padman
And Yet it moves

and I would love a "Save password and username" option when I login.

going to test some more games :P

Crayon Physics is saying you don't have thge QT libs installed. They are installed by default on 11.04. We haven't started testing against 11.10 since that is I thought a beta/testing release right now.

On Machinarium have you tried launching it from the terminal to see if it gives you an error and what the error is? Let me know on that one.

ioUrban Terror we will look in to.

This is a true milestone for linux gamers and (hopefully) the gaming industry in general. The beta's a great start. Only major bug I've found is when I try to watch a video in the browser, desura freezes beyond saving. I'm running Natty (Ubuntu) with GNOME3 and gnome-shell instead of unity. Linux 2.6.38-11-generic (x86)

Might be a stupid question but what is the purpose of a Linux Desura beta which tells me I am not allowed to log in since it is Beta ?
/me confused !

I am just asking because I do not understand what to test (beside that fact that I am able to start the client).

I am running x64 Ubuntu 10.04 LTS here if this matter.

The closed beta allows us (the developers) to fix issues with a small amount of people before releasing to the wider public which is easier to manage. Getting close to a full release soon

@DerRidda: Thanks for clarification ! so I I will wait patiently unless they either release the Linux client or open up the beta :)

Thanks again Desura for providing Linux support.

A crash occur when i want to install Trine. I added this game to my account under Windows, with the "add installed games" wizard, from my steam account.

When i want to install it, a window appears with "collecting informations" (something like that, i use Desura in french) and the client doesn't do anything... When i press Cancel button on this window, the Desura client crash and i get a message error "Desura Error", asking me to restart desura, force update or exit.

It happens with all games i added with the wizard, under Windows. When i cancel an install, the client crashes too.

Hello. Running desura from Kubuntu 11.04, when I run the unzipped installer it creates the desura sub-directory, and I see the installer / updater on the screen for a second. Then the program exits with an "Illegal Instruction" error. No other output is generated. Additionally, the executable desura file dissapears (the desura executable in the bin folder is still there). I'm rather stuck. And help appreciated!

Hi there,

Are you using x32 or x64? I will install a copy and try to reproduce the problem now.

Most likely, this is due to not having GTK libraries installed.

I am in the same boat. My laptop with 32 bit Kubuntu 11.04 runs it fine, but on my desktop, with Debian Sid, it just crashes after the install window says Intitializing. I have the GTK libraries installed, because I use a lot of GTK apps.

Can we get a complete list of dependencies? Seems silly to require dependencies, but then only release as a binary blob, and no mention of what dependencies are required.

My laptop is has an Intel AtomN320 32bit processor, 1.5gig of RAM, with Kubuntu 11.04. My Desktop is an AMD64 3800+ single core processor, 1.5 gig of RAM, and 32bit version of Debian Sid.
