Report article RSS Feed Desura Linux - Beta launch

Desura Linux is finally available to a closed group of beta testers.

Posted by Platima on Sep 14th, 2011

After months of grueling work, we're proud to announce the launch of Desura Linux beta! The initial testing group is quite small but will grow as we eliminate bugs and are happy with the applications stability. To be fair we will be inviting people in order, so those who requested access to the beta 6 months ago (thanks for your patience!), you will be first in. Once our testers are happy, we will be opening the beta to everyone. Of course it is never too late to apply for the beta, to do so simply join the Desura group here.

Also please note that while you can browse and buy games on Linux, you wont be able to download and play them until you have access to the beta. So PLEASE bear that in mind!

Thanks again to everyone for all the positive (and negative) feedback so far - we welcome the challenge and know the real work is only just beginning. Special thanks to Tim Jung for testing and uploading Linux games like a machine, and to Marshall Greenblatt and the other CEF contributors for the great work. We've got plenty more games coming, some never before on Linux, so much to look forward to.

Finally this is a beta, so we appreciate your understanding that there will be bugs and issues to resolve and we will endevour to address them as soon as we can.

New Information:

  • 22nd Sept 2011: A new build is out with MANY fixes. If you couldn't get past login, or don't want to wait, just run "./desura -f" to force your client to update to it (without the quotes of course, and from the desura directory, not from desura/bin/)
  • 22nd Sept 2011: Starting the next round of invites as well

Known Issue Notices:

These are issues we are aware of and currently working to address (last updated 22nd Sept 2011):

  1. On some systems there will be a lot of console output about GDK_IS_WINDOW assertion
  2. Sometimes exiting the client will result in a crash

When we release an update, you'll be notified above

Bugs and Issues:

Please report any bugs or issues on the forums.
Most bugs and help information is now being posted here .

Yes the Desura install is designed to be portable. You can move it where ever you like at any time where you have write permissions and it shouldn't break anything. We also wrote it to be in the user home directory so that you don't have to be root to install and the client doesn't have to worry about permissions. The other reason is that if your doing backups you should be backing up everything in the /home directory which would catch all your games and Desura.

YES! I have to go to work, but I just did a quick test.
Installs fine on Ubuntu 11.10, 64-bit.
Installing games works (those I've tested)

Possible bugs:

The Sales and New Releases window that pops up, doesn't change.
For example, it tells you so-and-so game has been released. If you click
next to see the text game, the window changes but the picture doesn't change.

Another tiny issue is that the download progress window is too small sometimes.
You can see the progress bar, but some text is cut off.

If any of those are unknown bugs, I'll get some screenshots together, as well as
poke around and see what errors I can find. But now, off to work!

Howdy,

The windows that don't change is a known bug (affects Windows too unfortunately).

And as for the text being cut off, your system most likely has a slightly bigger than normal font size. This is another known issue that is being addressed in both Windows and Linux versions.

Thanks heaps for your feedback though, and feel free to email me any screenshots as it always helps :)

Hi I'm Tim, the "Linux Game Lead". I have read through the messages here are there are at least two valid bugs that I see being reported.

1.....We didn't include libpng12 which until we push an update out you need to install.
2.....We didn't include libjpeg62 which until we push an update out you need to install.

A trouble ticket has been opened for both of these issues and the developers are aware of the problem.

Yes I know that libjpeg-turbo is suppose to be the same in both API/ABI but just to be on the safe side please install these particular libraries and you should be fine. Both libraries are installed by default on Unbuntu. Fedora needs the libjpeg62 since they switched to libjpeg-turbo awhile back.

Please continue to report any problems or strangeness that you notice. We want to make it the best we possibly can for Linux users. Yes I am a long time Linux user since the days of Slackware, so I have been through all the pains of Linux growing as well. I look forward to hearing more from you the community.

I will be checking back frequently to offer any support or answer any questions that I can.

I should also mention that if you install a game via Desura and it doesn't work for you, please let me know so I can correct the issue and get it working for everyone. We tried to test these across several distributions but clearly we can't test them all.

Yes about that, most games don't start for me with your launch.sh, but with the standard start script/binary.
Now the more important question:
Where should we report this stuff? Just keep spamming these comments, your regular bug forums, will there be a bug tracker or should we even message you?

i.e. project zomboid demo:
I can launch it from terminal with your launch.sh:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH before changing it in the launch.sh: /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64
after: /PATH/TO/desura/common/games/project-zomboid/./: /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64
Works without problems.

From desura:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH before change: /PATH/TO/desura/lib
NEW PATH: /PATH/TO/desura/common/games/project-zomboid/./: /PATH/TO/desura/lib
and I get this error:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no lwjgl in java.library.path

(the spaces are not in the PATH, I just can't post long "words")

Hi, I installed a lot of games and they all work perfect, so cool. Just a small bug, when you launch some games, for example osmos and lugaru the games open in background and the client window remains open, ctrl-shift to solve, but a small bug. Thanks for the beta access!

Oh right, I forgot to report that. An issue with Zomboid more than Desura: the file the game is looking for is media/ui/StoryMode_Text.png but the file that actually comes with game is media/ui/StoryMode_text.png. Rename it and the game will run until the PZ dev's correct it.

Well, none of the java games are working here on Arch 64 bit, that's probably because the latest java just does not play well at all with lwjgl. Also: Is there any way to put in switches? I need to run braid with " -windowed -width 1920 -height 1080" but putting that in user launch options doesn't do anything.

VVVVVV if run from the launcher fails with not being able to load libtiff.so.4, but if I go into the folder and double click on VVVVVV_64, it launches fine. Hmm.

No wait, putting stuff into the user launch options is passing them to the program fine (just tried it on AZS and it works fine) which means Braid isn't crashing due to the resolution, like VVVVVV it crashes when run from the script but not when run directly. Hmm.

In both cases it's just the default libs with the games not playing well. Sometimes I hate running a rolling release distro.

Creating a package will be hard for any distribution because Desura downloads all needed files to working directory. This could be bypassed if Desura binary checks if it has a privileges to save files in current directory and if not then user can select new directory (~/.desura can be default). Path to it may be saved for example in ~/.config/desura

In this way, we can easily create a packages for all distributions and users will still be able to install Desura in any folder that they want

On my ArchLinux with GnomeShell everything (apart from what happens after login :P) works great. I just had to install libjpeg6 from AUR

Gentoo amd64
Portage is nice allowing to have multiple port versions in different slots, so libjpeg 62 was not a problem.
However, Desura doesn't run:
./desura: line 41: 11375 Illegal instruction bin/desura $ARGS
From dmesg:
[ 7143.479808] desura[11375] trap invalid opcode ip:7fbc7d3c8ae3 sp:7fffed26d118 error:0 in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2200.1[7fbc7d0fb000+401000]
With --gdb it shows login window, but attempt to login or to exit makes it generate SIGABRT.
Login attempt: Pastebin.com ("Desura Error" window also appears, and dump is generated and logged: Uploading.com )
Exit attempt: Pastebin.com

The install goes somewhat fine but I'm getting an inconsistency error (ld.so). Seems like my libs have some different version or something along those lines.

Gentoo ~amd64
wxWidgets 2.8.12 (could this be it? I hear you're using 2.9.x)

Haven't had much other issues but the aforementioned one renders the app unable to start.

You can still go to the Humble Bundle web site with your HiB key that you got when you bought the bundle. If you go to the Humble Bundle web site for the last 2 bundles you will see an option to get a redeem code for the games on Desura. Follow those directions and the bundle games will be added to your account.

If a game have multiple buy choice and the first one is free (like a demo). When installing, it ask for the version. If the free version is selected, the middle button is still "Add to cart". If you click on that button, the install fail. You have to select a paid option, then go back to the free one. The "Add to cart" button then become "Install", and the installation work without problem after.
