Dead Before Dawn, The Left 4 Dead campaign tribute to the movie remake of George Romero's Dawn of the dead is now available as full VPK release for you to play.
This release fixes plenty of bugs and adopts many of the community's suggestions as gameplay improvements. We hope that you have fun playing it as much as we had fun making it.
If you're here following this mod for a while, you know we went trough several stages in development, released an unfinished beta to get your thoughts and then decided how we should streamline the experience to be pleasant for everybody.
You can also download the end result (minus some public fixes we might implement in the future) on:
Important:
L4D1 requires that you do not forget to use the console command snd_rebuildaudiocahce ingame after you installed the campaign, or else you will not hear our custom content.
If you want to read all about the fixes we have done the last 8 months, you can read the post on our developers forum
Please don't forget to consider voting for this campaign, as this is 95% more the version we intended to release last year.
To close this off, we are currently hard at work for an L4D2 version as well but don't expect that to go public before at least mid October. Next week we will have a surprise in this matter so you might want to check back regularly!
Signing off and don't forget to have fun with the campaign!
Just out of curiosity...how it´s even possible to release an unfinished beta?
Beta is supposed to be released for testing (finding and fixing issues, adding/removing stuff, etc.)
Anyway, congrats.
Beta as in it's not final. What's so complicated there?
That's why its beta... he released it publicly so that the margin of error can be narrowed for future releases. Unless you know 1,000 people personally, this is a public test. So what's the problem?
because this ain't a beta anymore, sure it will have some post release glitches but nothing we can't fix in a public update later this year. We just have to accumulate enough reasons for an update, because everyone will have to go to vpk version 9
I think his point was that if it's a beta, by definition, it's "unfinished." "Unfinished beta" is redundant. Semantics, ho!
In any case, congrats on the release. I hadn't realised the .vpk stuff was such efficient compression; considering the last one was something like 2.3GB and this is a mere 380MB. :D
Incidentally, the first of your alternative download links takes me to an .mp3 hosted on a Belgian website, so I imagine it's broken.
oops.... I didn't get that, I really thought I posted the netday link. I'll have to see if the post (if I edit it) will dissapear again. I might just leave it as it is for today not to break the release article prematurely. But the mp3 is some music I made for the campaign anyway. I'll have to replace it soon.
when removing the "beta" for me it says its playable from start to finish without running in to a too obvious bug.
Nice :)
Played this on an earlier state and loved it, now Im sure its better :)
Waiting for the L4D 2 version, i dont play L4D1 anymore, cant go back to corner camping.
Can't wait to play this. Review coming soon. Modsentry.com
Downloaded but no install information???
it is not authorized yet... the tutorial should be available soon
can wait for the l4d2 version
Just found a problem with a map, in "Anna's gone", I tried to go up the pile of crap onto the top of the bus (near that pavilion where the players first see the chopper) and got stuck behind the fire.
In addidion, in the chapter "cleanup" after you close the doors, the switchbox for the "1,000,000th" customer doors event doesn't work.
the tutorial that details about the sound issue in left 4 dead and our campaign is now available in the tutorials section. It explains the details about the problem.
Hmm, the customer door does work, it's just different then the west gate where you have to "hold" the button.
At least there's someone out there who's not a mindless zombie. I tip my hat to you, please don't move onto L4D2
How does developing for L4D2 make someone a "mindless zombie?" I recognize that you're STILL part of the L4D2 boycott so I'm not really expecting an intelligent response, so I'll answer that question for you: It doesn't. There is absolutely nothing wrong with developing for L4D2. Give it up already, L4D2 has gone for $5 on sale before. Even the steam L4D2 boycott group members have been buying the game on sale, every other comment is "I just bought the game on sale for a reasonable price"
Eventually we will move onto L4D2, but we thought L4D1 deserved to have it defibbed a bit, so we're trying to put some life back into L4D1 for a while
I was going ask the same question about if you were going to do it for L4d2
kick ***!
That should be "snd_rebuildaudiocache" surely, not "snd_rebuildaudiocahce"
'Cause some people will just copy and paste it in error. Nice job, but I'm going to wait for the L4D2 version.
I would LOVE to play this, but my steam has been broke as ****. Gonna watch everybody else have fun with it though
when will the dl be back?
