Report article RSS Feed Change of Pace - Updates Rescheduled

Yo Pokemon fans! We'll be making a few changes regarding the game's development.

Posted by Xatoku on Sep 7th, 2013

Hello.

To start, my word is extremely valuable to me. I made a goal to release updates every two weeks for PokeGen, and we've managed to meet that goal all through the summer. To go back on that word isn't something I'm particularly proud of, but I'm at a point in my life where I don't have much else of a choice.

I'm not seeking pity or anything, but there's a few things that have to be understood. For one, I'm unemployed. I've been doing some minor freelance work which has kept me going over the year, but when combined with not going to secondary school, I have to make a few key decisions at this particular point in my life.

PokeGen is probably the best hobby I've ever had, and will continue to be for the most part, but it doesn't pay the bills. Granted, I've learned quite a ton while developing the game, but I need to start thinking career wise which is something I can't do with all of my time devoted to PokeGen. Because of this, I've decided to start my own project, an original project. Something I can call my own, develop with my own creative ingenuity, and primarily, monetize from.

What this means is that my focus will be directed at developing this new game to a level I consider worthy enough to create a Kickstarter for it. I intend to work on PokeGen as a hobby from this point on, and what that means is that the updates will be released slower. If you remember back in February when we released that first demo, and then on May 31st when we released Version 2, it will largely return to that form so that I can get my life in check.

The next release for PokeGen will be onDecember 1st. It may not be the biggest release, but it will be a release none the less. The game will continue to develop, but at a slower rate, it's just something that has to be done.

If you guys are interested, once it's further along I'll start posting information about this new game and what I intend for it to be. It's an extremely early WIP at the moment, but it exists. My dream would be to work on it full-time and return to updating PokeGen every two weeks as a hobby, but we'll play it by ear. If it doesn't pan out and the Kickstarter fails, I'm not sure what I'll do, but rest assured I'll keep you all in the loop as I always have.

Anyways, I hope you guys can understand the situation and wish me luck on my future endeavors, I'll need it!

I barely have interest in this project, but I was interested in Xatoku's work. So far he's shown that he hasn't been able to finish any projects before moving to the next. Ultimately that was my fate when I dabbled in game design... Good luck on your new **** though. Feel free to vote down this comment too... I just keep it real with what I say.

This is only his second project. So you really aren't saying much.

He clearly stated he did not know much of anything about his new project other than it being his own production- no copy rights that may shut it down.

Hey man, don't know if you've considered this, but when you design your personal game, you should build it on the same backend you want this game to be on. It'd make it much easier to streamline the backend for both if they're running on the same code.

Plus, the basic netcode/interface you have in place now can be used for a variety of different things.

Irregardless, goodnight, and good luck.

Dear Xatoku. As always you are still trying to fulfill our dream with giving us the ideal Pokemon game, that ALOT of us have been waiting for. I'm a deeply convinced that this game will be worth waiting for, and the folks waiting for the PokeGen should appreciate what you have done so far.
It's nothing but fair that you need to make something for of your own ingenuity that you can monetize from.
Personally I think you've done a BADASS job on PokeGen so far, and ofcourse I simply can't wait for it to be released, but on the other hand, I know that it'll be worth the wait, big time.
I will keep supporting you as I'm a fan of your work, especially PokeGen, and just hang in there buddy, we're all rooting for ya ;-)

I have a great way of earn money
you can take pokegen, and make it even greater by that you will make an offical web and if someone wants to play this game he will have to register (Account based on database) and he/she will get free 6 pokeballs
and if he/she wants more pokeballs he will have to buy them.
But thats mean that you need to take pokegen to a whole new level.
You need to make a bigger map, 2 or 3 offical servers and more pokemons.

Since its free2play it is not serious? Yes I want to play this game, yes I know he needs money to live and to be capable of starting his own studio. And his serious game is the new one.

Free 6 Pokeballs, and I have to buy more with money...
In that case, I wouldn't even play the game. For one thing,
he can't make money off of PokeGen because he doesn't own Pokemon. If he made money off of PokeGen, then Nintendo would sue him, probably making him lose even MORE money.
Secondly, nobody wants to play a pay4fun game unless they can
afford to buy and it's actually worth it. The problem here is that there's some people who CAN'T afford to buy more pokeballs with your ever so great idea. I could list some of the things that we like pokegen for.
1. Good graphics
2. Interesting, unique playstyle (Live Skirmish thing)
3. It's FREE.
If it was a pay4fun game, it would probably kill most of it's fanbase. This isn't a great way to earn money. It's a horrible way to earn money, and a great way to LOSE money.

Don't know if you'll get this message but what if you just gave out all your current progress of the game and let other developers do what they want with it? they can continue your (basically) legacy :P You've created something of a masterpiece here and it deserves to be finished. Even if not directly by you. Just a a thought from a huge fan :P Anyway wish you the best for the future and being a gamer of all genres i'll defiantly buy your new game. Especially if its a truly creative and new idea. Good Luck

People who say they wouldnt pay for this type of game dont really deserve to play it at all, imho.
This is by far the best pokemon game I ever played, and there is not more than 10 pokemons on the map. Unfortunately, Xatoko cant charge anything for the game, but I really wish there was other ways to help, but, unless you know allot about programming and stuff, Im not sure if you can help at all, right? =(

Trust me, if I had the money and the game costed money (Without Xatoku ending up getting sued), then I'd buy it. Some of us don't have the money to do so, however. There's plenty of great games that I'd like to play, but I can't because I don't have the money. Nor can I afford to pay 20$ subscriptions every single month. So like I said, some of us can't afford to buy a game or pay for it every month. It kinda sucks that some games with subscriptions are better than ones without. :c
