I have been really busy this week getting ready to go to Seattle for the Penny Arcade Expo, where I will be giving a talk about indie game art, but I still found some time to work on Overgrowth. I started working on the 3D cat models, and have been making good progress. However, characters take longer than most models because they have so many details.

I have been really busy this week getting ready to go to Seattle for the Penny Arcade Expo, where I will be giving a talk about indie game art, but I still found some time to work on Overgrowth (which you can preorder here). I started working on the 3D cat models, and have been making good progress. However, characters take longer than most models because they have so many details.

Be sure to watch it in HD!

Here are the details for my PAX presentation:

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Make Art for Indie Games

Raven Theatre

Sunday 1:30pm - 2:30pm

In the recent past the primary options for artists who want to join the game industry have seemed limited. Choose a specialty, get a job at the lowest rung of a big company, move your way up the ladder. But with the rise of indie games other paths for artists are becoming more and more available. Hear three artists, a musician, and an art director who have found their niches in the indie scene talk about what it takes to set out on your own, work with small teams, and the fun and challenge of such tasks as taking on an entire art pipeline yourself. Panelists: Brendan Mauro (Cogs, Natural Selection 2), Derek Yu (Spelunky, TIGsource.com), Aubrey Serr (Wolfire Games), Danny Baranowsky (Super Meat Boy, Cave Story 3D), Kris Piotrowski (Capybara Games)

I am looking forward to meeting some Overgrowth fans!

Would be great, if you could film the event, or just the presentation. I think this topic holds lots of interest for aspiring indie developers.

I would like to see the cats have different proportions than the rabbits. Right now it looks to me like the rabbit body with a cat head slapped on.

Slender neck, less long hind legs so they don't look like they were made for jumping. Just things that make them stand out more as a race. I would make them a lot shorter overall, a bit more cute, a bit more feminine. Because these body types don't really fit the domestic cat. I think it would for tigers, leopards, lions, etc. though and maybe those are going to be part of this race. Than you can scratch what I said. ;)

I guess you could also say the same for the rabbits, not having enough likeness to their fluffy realistic counterparts. But hey they are the protagonists in this game, they're supposed to look cool and strong.

can only agree, the cat doesn't look agile at all, and more like someone who could wrestle with a wolf
the head seems to bee too big, as probably the whole body if you compare it to the rabbits and wolves

Yeah I have this vision of the cats as these small ninja/kung fu sage type characters, who get all their strength from their agility and technique, taking you out by a surprising, precise attack somewhere in your weak spots. I don't see them doing the same power kicks as the rabbits, nor the brute force moves of the wolves.
So I imagine them having alot of those evasion moves that were shown a couple of videos earlier, twisting and turning their whole bodies.

So somewhere between this and the typical sage types like Yoda or Korin from dbz should be perfect.

I didn't even watch the video the first time. I always liked the way Da Vincy portrayed cats and mixed some dragons inbetween; similar anatomy, sneak and sly.

I think why it is difficult with cats is because they are very flexible and their movement comes from the rear, pushing forth. Maybe for the cats it would be interesting to walk more on four than two legs. They would be completely exceptional in this world. Maybe older than the other races - and somehow I can see how a cat can be turned into a Dragon... there might be some story in this for you to exploit.
