It was just last week that we posted our first news update in some time. I wanted to also draw attention to another aspect of the project however: level design.

People may be under the misconception that just because a game isn't out yet, we can't start any form of level building. In our case, that is not quite true.

First up, some beautiful concept art from the very talented Alex Popescu. He has done some amazing atmospheric paintings of two of the locale's that Talon 1-5 will pay a visit during their tour of duty. The first is "Madler's Homestead," the first and most thriving Martian colony. The second, is an image of Hong Kong from the late 22nd century. The massive structure in the center is actually the aerospaceport for the city. Alex is also in the process of doing a similar painting of our demo level: Los Angeles.

Next, we have some more down-to-earth concepts from our very own FarhatAli. He has done some more architectural renderings of the street level of Los Angeles. These are a great help to the level designers as blueprints for how the details of the level should look. The first image is of a commercial street. Note the enclosed, two-story sidewalks. The second image is of a park, surrounded by pedestrian catwalks.

And last but certainly not least, ArcadiaVincennes, our lead level designer, has been using the Roboblitz editor to block out the very basic BSP of our demo level. This BSP will be transferable to UT2k7 upon its release. Here are two shots from the Talon 1-5's insertion point, where they hot drop behind enemy lines into the dense urban jungle of Los Angeles circa 2178.

Our next update will consist of some character and weapon concepts. We also hope to have our site overhaul finished within the next few weeks. It has proven to be a slightly more complex project than first anticipated, but nevertheless it will be worth it.

Til next time!

Do you have original copies of those images? They're awesome, but the resizing and compression have really messed them up.

Thanks all!

Yeah, the original concepts were way too big to put up on Moddb. So unfortunately, this was the largest we could have them and still upload them. Hopefully it gets the idea across.

The map shots, I should reiterate, are simply BSP work. Textures are placeholders, but it was more to show that work was actually getting done in that department. In UE3, 99.9% of the level are actually models, not BSP as most people are used to working with. BSP is simply used to block out the environment for player-flow, etc. You can rest assured that the VISUALS of the levels will be a lot different, but the actual layout (and that work was being doen) is what we wanted you guys to see.

I think the wip maps look fine. No need to explain it away.
