Post news Report RSS A quick video tease

Seeing as theres a few days left to vote for your favourite mod we thought we'd share an old video with you.

Posted by on

This was recorded a few months back and shows a very very rough work in progress Pegasus map. It also has a small selection of various shots from a beta test.

You can check it out on our video page or below:

Moddb.com

The German player is currently "on loan" from DoDS whilst our own is being finished off. The Third Person muzzle flashes also did not show up. Very little time was spent on editing so don't expect Hollywood levels of post production. It's simply just a little teaser to show some ingame action rather than still images.

We hope you all had a good Christmas and hope the video sways you into some last minute voting, we have much much more to show this year.

I'll be honest, I was hoping this mod was leaning towards more of a realism stance in terms of speed/movement, so the video kind of turns me off. It looks much more arcadey than I was hoping for, though I hope that everything gameplay wise is still wip. Map reminds me of a level in a red orchestra mod based on the western front, is it based on the same location? Thumbs up though, hope it comes together for you.

I agree on that, the video reminded me of DoD:S gameplay-wise, and in my eyes it's not really a good thing as I consider DoD:S gameplay BROKEN.

I understand your concern about movement speed however from regular playtests with the testers nobody has commented on the speed being too fast. The key difference, something you cannot judge till you play really, is the difference in the environments. In DoD:S everythings very compact and the player speed really makes it seem extra fast, however in HaJ the environments are so much more massive (the smaller maps are easily 2-3x the size of dod_donner) that its not an issue. Our speeds are less than DoD:S as well, the clips in the video also tended to show sections when players were sprinting too.

Hope you will check it out ingame when released to ease your worries.

I totally love ww2 and this looks really cool - but what sets this mod apart from day of defeat if i may ask? From the video the gameplay looks very similar?

Just off the top of my ahead, some differences:

- Commonwealth vs Wehrmacht
- Majority of maps based on real events/locations, with some mapped as faithfully as possible within engine constraints (haj_pegasus being accurate to around 10ft).
- A multitude of scenarios for first release ranging from 1940's Norwegian Commando raids, to the battle of Arnhem and on to D-Day and beyond. Mediterranean and North African maps will also feature.
- Realistic objectives, no more capturing inanimate flags in middle of streets
- Distant based damage, each weapon has a "effective range" beyond this damage falls of simulating reality. You're not going to be knocking people off at 1000yrds with a 9mm. This helps separate the classes abilities and makes teams work together.
- Realistic but fair movement system, you cannot go prone and spin 360 degrees instead you can only turn approx 45 degrees each way. Deployed weapons limit this further. You cannot bunny hop around the maps, jump is limited and will be bolstered with a mantling system ala CoD2/CoD4 for going over low objects
- Non-cloned weapons, the Sten is not a clone of the MP40, each side has different advantages and disadvantages to its weaponry
- Weighted Cone of Fire (I know DoDS had this, but we've had it for longer and published the code to do it freely online...)
- Teamwork is needed to suceed. It's not impossible to do things by yourself, but its a lot easier and you are rewarded for working together.

Theres plenty more, I should really add them all to the FAQ on our site.

Scenarios varying from map to map sounds really cool!

What do you mean by "free force's"? Poles, Free French, Norwegians?

Ultimately yes all of the above, obviously the bigger nations will come in first, those being British/Canadian/ANZAC forces and then we'll set about all the smaller free forces/resistance groups.

Looks great, i'm very pleased with what i've seen so far. The only suggestion I have is longer more visible tracers for bullets. The coolest I can remember about World war 2 is seeing all the ray tracers and stuff flying as the sound of bombs go off and machine guns let go the flack. Of course, this is really a personal preference I just hope you consider it. ;)

Great job so far. I like the idea of a ballistics firing system, if thats what I'm looking at anyway. Great job!

A normal assault rifle would not likely carry tracers they are normally kept for machine guns and only used every few shots to indicate where the bullets are flying.

Hmmm, I wish a better example of the game was shown. I've been keeping a keen eye on this mod for years and have read all of the many updates and this video doesn't show anything that I didn't know before.

I know this video was recorded a few months back but why post it if it shows nothing new or different from what we (the regular readers) already know? It doesn't even show anything different from the most basic WW2 shooters which we can play today.

My patience is beginning to wear thin. I think it's about time you guys release something that really shows off the game and its distinctive features because this video really doesn't cut it.

I don't mean to discourage you guys but there you go - an honest opinion of a regular lurker.

And why not use the in-game recorder instead of that Frap?

I hope you guys can find the time and effort to at really show off this mod, at the very least. Good luck.

What sort of thing would you want to see?

More video gameplay showing off the features of the game. Show off whatever makes HaJ special, rather than showing what every other game has already (running, shooting, dying, etc).

Personally I'd like to see more action from the first person view so then I can see the guns and textures and how they react and sound when fired - more guns! I'd like to see more footage of fighting. Footage of someone running across a bridge is barely enough to 'tease' anyone, I imagine.

What's with all the 3rd person view footage? Is that taken from the death cam? The game is played from the 1st person isn't it? So why are we watching a video mostly from the 3rd person?

Many (if not all) of the features that ginger_lord spoke of, above, were not evident in the video.

Examples and in-game footage of teamwork, the capturing system, the movement system, would be nice to see. If these are features that differentiate HaJ from DoD:S and such then why aren't they shown? Most, if not all of the current features in the game should be shown, if possible.

I really like the look of a lot of the maps from the screenshots I've seen but I've never seen any gameplay footage of it, which is a pity. All we have is this dark map which hides most of the details. If that was the plan then fair enough, but then again, isn't this meant to be a teaser?

Notice anything about the player models? The models from DOD:S look crap next to the H&J models!

This mod is made by members of the original HL1 DOD team. IMO Valve hired the **** members of the team. The noob pandering, w+mouse1 loving members. The H&J team are the real devs. They know how to make games.

Can't wait for this to come out!

Errr no.

None of us are or were on the original DoD team. Many of us are "old salts" from the DoD community and some of us made a lot of popular custom maps and a few had their content included in DoD.

But to repeat, no-one on the HaJ team is ex-DoD or ex-Valve (except maybe Waldo, but he's just a tester so he doesn't count :P )
