3D Tileset Buliding Tech Demo Released

Next in line for our tech demo releases is a preview of our Minecraft-inspired construction system. We wanted to take a different approach with our rendition of this genre, so we didn't use the traditional six-sided platonic solid you're all familiar with. Instead, we created "3D Tilesets" which are hand-crafted collections of models, and they fit together like puzzle pieces around whatever you built.

In time, we expect to diversify our tilesets to such an extent that your creations will have the same complexity and variety that you'd expect from real building architects, or highly skilled graphic artists. All while running under the fun and intuitive block-placing gameplay you're familiar with!

Check back for updates as we develop this technology towards our goal. You'll be able to try out every improvement, every step of the way.

The engine were using doesn't support this. Though it does have NACI(I think that's it...) basically native Google Chrome support which we will add one day. And also it will have Flash support soon which I am not sure if we will support.

But we plan on offering our games as non-streaming down the line as well. But for now when there small demos like this they will stream.

Its a great little system, but I'm pretty sure sauerbraten was doing this waaay before Notch ever thought of it (and plus with theirs you could use multiple cube sizes). Sauerbraten.org

Just saying, you reference Minecraft as the influence but in all fairness he didn't invent it and there were things doing this actually better than Notch's implementation when minecraft first appeared. The way you could improve on this is copy Sauerbraten's multiple cube resolutions this way you'll be able to create more complex shapes that don't look so blocky.

Looking great, can't wait to see what you do with this.

Yeah, we realize that Notch wasn't the first to think of a cube-style builder. "Infiniminer" came before Minecraft and is referenced by Notch as the source of his inspiration. Unfortunately, the majority of attention is focused on Minecraft even though it wasn't the first and might not necessarily be the best either. We figured however that referencing Minecraft would give most people the best idea of what to expect. We don't mean to be unfair to the original inventors as they deserve much more recognition than they have been getting.

Also, multiresolution cubes definitely seems like something worth researching. Our system currently uses Octrees (like Sauerbraten) so implementing this might not be so much of a stretch. We have tons of improvements planned, and expect them to produce the AAA results we're hoping for even if we don't end up using a multi-res system. But that definitely could pack some serious extra punch. :)

Thanks for sharing this with us, this is good to know.

I've been seeing some very nice projects on Unity lately (this one for example). I think I will give the engine a try again, now that I have more experience with game engines.

Yeah, it's a great engine! For my last game Silas I used 3dgamestudio A8. That was a cool engine and had an amazing community but it doesn't have the front end tools like Unity does. I kinda felt like an awakening once Steve and I started using Unity to make this game, it just simplifies so much for you that it really makes even the tedious parts of making games fun.
