Post news Report RSS Philip Muwanga's Squad Commander Version 1.0 Released!

After three long years Squad Commander is finally out. It been along road getting here with lots of up and downs, but the first full build is now online and ready to play.

Posted by on

Squad Commander is an RTS total conversion for the unreal engine. Featuring intense squad based action, spanning six story driven levels. Made over the past three years while I was doing my Masters in Creative Games, Squad Commander grew from its very different turn based concept, (think X-Com) to the real-time action game that it is today. Along the way encountering all the problems associated with game development. Giving me many a sleepless night, as builds wouldn’t work and testers found game breaking bugs, and also the joy of watching it all slowly come together. But with the first full build is now online and ready to play, and all that left for me to do is say a big thank you to everyone who’s helped me over the course of its development.

The Squad Commander Trailer

First off Richard Boon, thanks for all the help you've given me over the past three years, without which itwould have all turned out very different. From testing the game each week, to going over gameplay mechanics and of course going to the pub to 'discuss' the game (not to drink, oh no). Next, thanks to all the students from the Computer and Videogames Design course at Saford Uni, for testing my game, finding bugs and giving me lots of feedback. Finally thanks to everyone else who's played a part in the development this game, for giving me the help and support I needed to follow this path. As for me, I'm going to get some rest, before starting my next project 'Hexytrench' as an indy developer.

"Squad Commander requires UT2004 version 3186 or later, but the version on your computer is older (you have version 1)."

Buh? I've got the latest patch installed, and the value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Unreal Technology\Installed Apps\UT2004 is correct.

Do you have the Bonus Content Patch installed? And I run it through UT2004 first, then enable it through Community.

Ok boys and girls, the source file are now online. sorry about the wait but i couldn't get them uploaded from my parents house. Anyway the problem is apparently caused by the unreal megapack setting the version number to 1 (thanks for the heads up on that on grimallq) so everyone who has the megapack installed need to use the source files or just install the patch by hand before using the .umod file. I hope this helps you guys.

That sounds like the error I got trying to install Killing Floor. Never solved it.

I'd love to try this out, but alas, UT2004 doesn't run properly on my gaming machine :(

I'm uploading the source files now, so that people can manually install it if the .umod file won't work for them.

Yeah, I've been a huge 40k fan since I was about 8 years old. This game was originally meant to be a computer version of Necromunda but I ended up changing to to my own ip.

An original IP with original gameplay, which looks really fun.

You've achieved what some try to achieve, and not as many people probably need to want to try to achieve. Congratulations.

Of course it does. Well, the Steam-version is not different from the "normal" one.

BTW: Looks great, glad i've ut04 still installed on my computer, I'll download it immediately.

looks like a real cool mod. I never heard about either of the two great new mods for Unreal and I now regret having uninstalled UT2004 to free a couple of gigs on my drive.
I'll probably have to reinstal and give it a shot. This really seems like an original game, completely different from any other Unreal mods, I know.

Congrats!

Yeah, I like it, but I miss the build-your-base parts :/! It would be a good RTS.

Alright, I am a bit of a newbie here when it comes to this, but I never installed a mod from a umod file before. I extracted the files out, but right now, am totally lost to what additional setup I need to do, or what batch file will I need to create to launch it.

Apologies.

"Squad Commander requires UT2004 version 3186 or later, but the version on your computer is older (you have version 1)."

This error is usually caused by the Megapack. Megapack includes patch 3369 but after installing it, sets game version to 1 instead of 3369. One way of fixing this is to manually install patch 3369 after installing Megapack.
