Multiplayer Beta Release Q1 2014 Cancelled

Our plan to bring you the multiplayer beta of Operation Black Mesa early this year didn't work out, regrettably. Several factors and circumstances forced us to completely keep it under the hood until further notice.

Multiplayer Progress

Multiplayer will feature classic maps such as Yard, Crossfire and Boot Camp as well as brand-new ones like Deptcharge and Gambit from day 1.
Currently in development: CTF mode and weapon placement.

Depthcharge

Singleplayer Campaign

Development is running smoothly; those NPCs aren't going to animate themselves though! If you're interested in joining our team, check out the jobs page where you can find all positions currently open. We look forward to welcoming you on board!

Pit Worm's Nest

Remember Guard Duty (Blue Shift: Source)? We're making solid progress here too:

Living Quarters Outbound

OBM: The Video Game?

We've been given the option of developing our projects as full indie titles to be sold on Steam!
This opens up a whole lot of attractive possibilities to consider; however no decision has been reached yet as to this matter.

Alien Controller

M1A1 Tank

Thanks for your support in making all of this possible!

Until next time,
Tripmine Dev Team

"The main obstacle for us is a considerable bulk of license fees we'd have to invest in."

That's sad. However, if you find a solution, then I'd be more than willing to pay for your work. My dream of playing through the whole HL1-trilogy officially remade would come true and you would get even larger audience. Besides, it'd be one hell of a start for the commercial Tripmine studios. If I were you, I'd grab that deal! Dependless of your final decision however, congratulations for the offer and keep it up, those new screens look fantastic!

> Marked as Free to Play on Greenlight, initially advertised as such
> Once greenlit, announces possible plan to turn mod into paid product on Steam, instead of their original free project
> It isn't even an original IP

That's nice

False information.
Reading the full article helps.

I've read the article. I know the dilemma they're facing. We went through the same deal with Valve in No More Room in Hell.

Although we could've sold our mod as a Source title on Steam, we chose not to. We simply wanted to allow people to enjoy our game through a nice digital distribution service, for free. None of us on the team became modders with the intent of making money.

It'll be a shame if the rest of the greenlit Source projects go the way of Black Mesa's choice.

The part about the paid version completely replacing the free one is not true.
It's just meant to be an additional option which the consumer may just as well choose to disregard.

(Slightly edited the article to avoid further confusion.)

That said, these news aren't final and we are leaving this undecided for the moment, deliberately so.

On the subject of money, here is an excerpt of a scrapped news article from last year:

"Our main goal has not shifted. With the way this business model is set up compared to the time we sink into it, our work is still far from paying off financially. We're not required to sell anything in order for this "project" to succeed.
We'd like to become an independent game studio and establish a firm root and reputation within the gaming industry.
All of us still develop this game in our spare time next to college, work, school or other means of being occupied. Think of the paid version as our way of saying thank you for donations.

Note: Nothing would have stopped us from putting a price tag on Operation Black Mesa itself, except for the very promise we gave from the outset that it would be free."

Thanks for your input and I do understand your concerns.

I must admit, I'm totally in love with the perspective of playing my favourite Half-Life expansion pack with Source engine, and I heartfully support your project, but there is one thing that feels wrong here: the title.
"Operation: Black Mesa" sound pretty cheap, quite inadequate for such a production. I guess you want to keep the connection to the "Black Mesa" project (that HL1 Source remake), but upon a closer look it just feels silly. The name of the operation should not give away what it was all about. For example, Operation Labrador, or Operation Tempest, or Operation Opera. These names tell you nothing, right? And that's their purpose. Operation: Black Mesa just gives out everything you need to know. If someone starts to dig in the papers, he'll find out about what was supposed to be silenced and erased from history.
Why didn't you just call it "Operation: Opposing Force", I wonder? Because unless you had copyright problems, I think it sounds way better. Does not give out any details about the operation; corresponds well with real-life names of U.S. operations (i.e. Operation Enduring Freedom, or Operation Earnest Will, or most importantly Operation Allied Force); and connects the game with its predecessor, HL:OF.
I hope I didn't discourage you in any way, I just wanted to voice my opinion about the title. Other than that, keep up the good work!

Thanks for your input.
Many of your points sound plausible, and while this has been part of our considerations for a long time, the fact remains that O:BM is beyond a point where a name change would require too much work and re-arrangement, which we cannot possibly afford for the time being.
In short: It is likely not going happen, simply due to organizational reasons.
