Post news Report RSS 2.0 preview 3: Princes, Sellswords and Seneschals

The third article in a series of previews showing what new and improved content you will be able to experience in A Clash of Kings 2.0.

Posted by on

Version 1.4 of A Clash of Kings saw the introduction of a new sellsword system, whereby the player was able to recruit companions, and from there also gain access to some of the sellsword companies.

That system was less than perfect, mostly due to the fact that too many people did not read the dialogue and then got confused when they didn't get their sellswords right away.

2.0 have had the system overhauled. You can now only recruit sellsword companies if you're an independent ruler. All you need to do, is talk to your seneschal, and then fork over a great amount of gold.

Sellsword recruitment 1 Sellsword recruitment 2
Sellsword recruitment 3 Sellsword recruitment 4

It still needs a bit of work, but the barebones system is in place and will make hiring sellsword companies less tedious and more fun.

Until 2.0 is released, I'll put up a new preview every sunday from now on - if I have something cool or fun to showcase.

Hmmm, sounds like a good idea. Will there be any mercenary hiring for players who work for existing factions though?

King Stannis Baratheon seems to be a rather mercenary hiring fellow, and as a servant of him, I should hire some too :P

Anyway, anxiously awaiting the next version! :D

>You can now only recruit sellsword companies if you're an independent ruler

That doesn't sound like the best solution. The siege of Meereen had no leaders, and yet each Lord brought their own sellsword companies.

They did? Which lords brought which companies?

I don't bloody know, I'm not a sad **** who memorises every page. All I remember is that some of the companies were referenced to have been bought by some of the Ghiscari Lords. It might have been when they were arguing in that fat yellow guy's tent.

Just asking, where did Stannis bring the troops that defeated Mance Rayder? Weren't they sellswords?

They arent sellswords. He dont lose all his army in Blackwater, his warriors are from Stormlands and Dragonstone.

Why would you even bother trying to argue a point you clearly have no idea about???

Reasonable and calm response:
Lord Tywin hired the Brave Companions, and then they worked directly for Lord Bolton. Theoretically a lesser lord could hire a lesser sellsword company. Perhaps on a limited but renewable time frame.

I always just thought of the sellswords being in general employ of Mereen

How about the idea that hiring sellswords has the temporary effect of making village recruits and faction troops less willing to join your army? All caused by gaining a bad reputation for hiring sellswords.

A secondary effect could be that while you have sellswords in your company, certain high tier faction troops may abandon your cause at random, looking upon you with disdain.

This way, sellswords are the easy road towards having a large army of expendable men, but at the cost of making it a lot more difficult to manage and maintain high tier troops such as knights or trained faction troops.

can you make contracts with kings and lords? no, does a king give a message that he wants to hire you for x weeks/days/months, no, can you build the mercenary camp or have your own one, no, something like this i was trying to say but people doesn't get it and rages like hell xdd

Actually, yes, sort of, and no. You can ask for tasks from vassals of a faction, and sometimes they'll ask to hire you as sellsword, and whenever said vassal joins a military campaign, they'll ask for your services. You can renew the contract every month.

All of the sellsword companies were under contract form Yunkai, the rest of the troops were from New Ghis and Qarth with small numbers from Elyria and Tolos. So no Lord brought there own troops it was there leaders hence the systems keeps with lore.

I wish there was a way for us to make our own custom company.

There is. Hire a bunch of troops, name your party something like a sellsword company name, and then work for a faction as a Mercenary. ;)

I've read in the changelog that "morningstars" now do "piercing" damage instead of "blunt" which is great (it is unrealistic right now plus it is way too easy for people to farm captives this way).
But does this also include maces? Because in medieval times maces most of the time did not really have sharp but pointy edges to transfer all of the energy of the blow into a single spot to maximize the impact, especially against armored opponents.
So a "piercing" damage perhaps would be better suited here. Overall it doesn't matter how you call it, but an opponent shouldn't just get knocked unconscious when killed by a mace, that's not how this weapon worked!

Any chance you can change the upkeep for the unsullied? being slaves and all don't think they would be demanding payment?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote

Also anyway you will make the mercenaries from the lances in the cities in essos upgradeable?

Already done. Should be noted in the changelog?

what about the unsullied, can you greatly reduce the unsullied upkeep price? We are already paying an extremely high cost for one of them and they're slaves so it goes with the lore.

Well the Unsullied are some of the strongest troops in the game as far as I know so there has to be some nerf on them so you don't have an army of 500 unsullied wrecking everything in the world.

Is there a plan to release before Christmas? no pressure just wondering if I should start playing 1.5 or if I should wait a few more days. Either way looking forward to play 2.0 looks wonderful.

Cozur keep up the godly work!!! Most legit Mod I've played in awhile and can't wait for 2.0. Could you manage to after marriage be able to choose amount of children then they just become lords or ladies to grow your faction internally maybe between 1 to 5. Then marry off your daughters and sons (only the player character can do so) feasts are fun but boring and wives really don't do anything. Just an idea though also do you have a rough idea when you will release? Get it bro!!!

I have been wondering how you will make the unit trees for the major factions. I for one would like to see more split in the unit tree like you can end up with good cavalry infantry and archers instead of making the infantry turn into cavalry. I have been playing for Dorne now for a while along side with the Targaryen and i have to go to iron Island to get some decent infantry who don't die on me or upgrade into cavalry

When I recruited a sellsword company as a ruler, they and their leader appeared on the map as a new vassal (hired company of the cat and Bloodbeard became a new vassal, and I could offer him a fief or order him around), rather than directly joining my party.

Is this supposed to happen?
